Spring time in Japan means the return of the rhinoceros beetles - "Kabutomushi", which is Japanese for "helmet bug" - and their athletic contests of dominance. Out in the wild, you can find them butting heads trying to show off their strength and impress their insect friends with their wrestling skills. This is the origin of the phenomenal World Insect Wrestling Championship.
In Kabuto Sumo, you are one of the contending beetles that is battling for supremacy in the ring and your place in the pantheon of legendary wrestlers. The gameplay of Kabuto Sumo resembles the coin-pusher arcade games in which you strategically drop quarters and anxiously anticipate coins cascading off the platform. This game features a similar experience, with you trying to strategically slide pieces onto the board and push the other players out of the ring. It's an exciting combination of dexterity, strategy, and luck.

Love hearing your house rules! There's a lot of flexibility in Kabuto Sumo (some we intentionally designed into it, and some that's just there because of physics), so we really do like hearing how folks are tailoring each play experience to their needs. Good catch on noticing the weight change of discs when you stack them, its a super useful tactic!

This game is pretty close to my heart. Tony is one of my favorite designers and person in general. He and his son designed this game and it was a mega passion project for him. We met at Unpub a few years ago when he was promoting 'Fire in the Library' with Carla and crew. When he was planning on pitching this he spoke publicly about how life was getting in the way of his designing and I threw together a go fund me to get him to GenCon so he could pitch the game. Thank you for covering this game and your insights, as always are great!

I recently picked up this game and the expansion (I missed out on the Kickstarter and only heard about the game last month) I picked it up because I liked the artwork, the theme and the gameplay looked intriguing. Its my only dexterity based board game in my collection at the moment as well. It’s also a lighter game that me and my girlfriend could play once in a while. I unfortunately had the same problems with the game that both of you did. The game lasts a little too long and most games we played ended up with either of us losing to running out of tokens in our inventory, rather then knocking the other player out. Also moving the pieces to the very edge of the board seemed to make little impact. I do like the house rule you both came up with and will have to try it out with that.
But overall I enjoy the game, I think my girlfriend enjoys it it more since she beats me at it nine times out of ten 😂😂😂

This was an auto back for me I'm a huge fan of board game tables and their quality. We have most of their products. It also fits in well with the younger crowd as you mentioned. Like you said Bites and I would also tell you to take a look at Mountain Goats, On Tour, and QE.

I also backed this game having no idea if I'd like it. My kids love it and want to play it all the time but our games would go on forever. More than once I intentionally knocked my own piece off just to end the game. We started using house rules and my enjoyment level went way up. One other house rule we use: after your 3rd turn when pushing a piece on the board, the first piece it touches may not be your own bug. For the storage, cut out the long piece of cardboard in the main area and only keep the part that holds the cards, if you do that you can fit the assembled pushing platform inside the large circle platform and all the bagged pieces can still fit in the box including all the expansion pieces. Also, do yourself a favor put it on a Lazy Suzan.

Was so close to backing this as well. Thank you for the review and the ideas on the house rules. It will definitely be one on my radar if I run across it.

I love this game, and I don't regret backing it, but I agree with the nit picks you guys have. The issue I had was finally getting to play a game of this with my sister in a 2v2 game and she didn't have a good time because she got excited about her ability but never got to use it. Maybe it could be fixed by making the game longer by giving players a larger start inventory? I love the idea of your opponent stacking everything you accidentally knock over instead of it going to stock, and I might just have to try using your other ideas for house rules. Great video, guys.

I generally am against house ruling as well but had actually implemented the exact same thing with the dark brown line from the get go based off concerns for games lasting too long. The other thing I did was if you were pushing a piece directly into your wrestler you could only push the "original" way. This seemed to prevent stalemates and games ranged from 10 to 20 minutes

For "Ampolla" you pronounce the double L, not as a single L but as a Y (that's the norm for Spanish), and it means blister the same as in English.

Spot on review! I wanted to love this but was sad it landed closer to a "3" by your rating scale. I'm eager to try your house rule and knock it up a notch!

I really love bugs, but am far less intrigued with dexterity games. I also really like the components being so unique, production quality, and the theme, but ultimately I didnt think I would ever actually play the game, and at the time of the kickstarter there werent any gameplay videos of people actually playing through a whole game. Im still not sure im going to pick it up, but this video is crucial in bringing it back from the abyss for me. It was super intriguing but I needed to know it wasnt just being different to be different, and it was different in an attempt at innovative gameplay.

The dexterity feature would give an edge to those with smaller hands.

the 2 player variant is not good, if youre not playing two insects at once. the 4 player variant is in the right group good :) and yeah, you need a houserule to make it faster!

Anyone try Push a Monster? Very similar (but not as good in my opinion).
