Les Portes du Temps we use a tormek wet stone and all our gouges are external angle. we hollow grind to avoid lines when carving the bowl. oil and slip stones are used as well
Dear Thomas, Thanks for your answer ! Sharpening gouges doesn't seem to be so easier than professional woodworkers show to us ... ;) Have you got any advice to help a novice woodworker as me ? I'm so afraid to be wrong in the angle of sharpening ... Thanks in advance !
Les Portes du Temps well sharpening is not our favourite thing because it's more metal work than woodwork but as you have recognised it is very important. some things to consider are the gouges you have. some of ours are over 100yrs old and the steel is very good quality. as a basic outline we sharpen the external angle (outside) of the gouges, creating a slight burr on the inside of the gouges we make an initial cut in a piece of wood and use a honing wheel to remove the burr. the sharpening is completed by polishing the metal both internal and external using a leather or synthetic stropp.
Thanks, David ... I've just bought (and received) a rough piece of leather, for building a "strooper" (sorry if there are some language's mistakes , but I'm a french spoken) by gluing leather on a piece of wood to obtain (with some compounds) a "razor mirror blade" ... I hope I can be able to sharpen my gouges and carving tools with that ... and with a special stone from my Country (Belgium) : www.knivesandtools.fr/fr/ct/ardennes-coticules.htm?gclid=Cj0KEQjwnsPGBRDo4c6RqK-Oqu8BEiQAwNviCSBR6lVp0mqoaxmnXiSrhk502XXH6vYblqj2CXJ2FsQaAnnE8P8HAQ Do you know this produvt ? It seems to be worldly recognized ... Cheers !
Les Portes du Temps it looks like a type of sharpening stone not familiar with this specific one but we use similar oil based stones. to use it just locate the sharpening angle and rock the gouges from side to side to develop a burr on the inside of the blade. should be videos on RUclips to demonstrate the process. slightly off the subject but my grandfather was Belgium from Antwerp!! hope you get the sharpening sorted and enjoy your woodworking.
The designs on the previous ones on the wall there look very interesting indeed. Why have you depicted a crucifix inside the seal of Solomon / Star of David? Are you a Freemason by any chance?
RR PLANB RR PLANB hi and thank you for your comment. That lovespoon you refer to was made in 1972. The star of David and the name Munich carved down the centre records the fact that the Olympic games were spoilt by the killing of Jewish athletes. The cross inside and lamb of God records that we became Christians this year too. We are not freemasons.
Beautiful! And such satisfaction making something with your hands!
This is amazing I was getting ideas for my love spoon and I saw this video and my face just lifted with amazement 😄
Thanks for this video. You have made it really clear and easy to follow.
Da iawn!
Beautiful work, interesting vid, sir !
How do you sharp your gouges ?
Thanks in advance !

why not just put the spoon straight on the wood and draw around it.?
fishtank5050 we do use templates to replicate our lovespoons but the original design is always done using paper and carbon paper
