This was such a breath of fresh air. As much as I love Dave Ramsey & co, they way they talk about paying off debt sounds miserable. It feels like they want you to sign up to 5-15 year tours of joyless toil. You offer a nuanced and realistic alternative. Thank you for this.

Spot on. I burned the candle at both ends for 2 years. Sacrificed time, health and relationships. Im done. I haven't spent Christmas with my mom in 8 years because plane tickets are so expensive. But money can be made up. Time cannot. Taking two holidays in December. Next year... Japan

This video is spot on! I felt like I was the only one who wasn't overwhelmed by my debt despite my high amount of student loans. I'm not going to stress myself out trying to pay it off super fast. As long as I can afford my bills while living a decent lifestyle, I'm okay. I have a plan for financial freedom. It's all how you think about it.

I think this is great advice depending on the situation you are in. I do agree with the slow pay method if your life can handle it. If you live paycheck to paycheck then paying down debt quickly will help you take control of your life again. Especially if you are lower income with higher debt. Statistically people in these categories don't have good debt. Stress is all a matter of the mind in my eyes. If you don't mind the hustle to pay down debt completely because you enjoy the chase and can see the end of the tunnel soon, that works. If you can create a buffer for yourself where you can invest and still pay down debt slowly, then this works. I would like to see this video explained in different income brackets and debt levels. I think it would be a lot more objective then to watchers of various financial situations. Great video

OK. I just have to say that this video is exactly what I needed right now! I left a full-time job at 26 y/o to pursue med school. I'm in my second year now and have the most debt that I've ever had. I was extremely fortunate to grow up with parents who were very money conscious (but not cheap) and taught me the value of a dollar from a very young age. They gave me a head start by paying for my undergraduate degree under the premise that any other type of degree was going to have to be loans or bank-funded!
I've spent a lot of time worrying about debt over the last year or so, because I've never seen a number so high (and negative) in my bank account. But what you've said in this video has been an eye opener. Money is abundant. Time is not. I need to focus on my school and career and trust that the debt-repayment will happen!
THANK YOU so much for your guiding words!

This is the advice I was looking for.
Lately I have been so conflicted about throwing all of my money at debt.
I have kids and although they understand what I am doing, they are begging for a holiday. They don't quite understand how i can be working so much more lately but can't find the money to do anything.

Wow, using interest to buy back time. This is mind blowing for me. I was about to put myself under some "stress" the next 4 to months to payoff some debt. Everytime I think about the next four months, I just get anxious when I realise how much I need to sacrifice. Thank you for this.

So true! Avoid the all or nothing approach and apply a healthy plan to debt pay off. I have a student loan to pay off, which will take two years to pay off, then I will be debt free. What I feel is that the more money I have, the less I feel the need to spend it on trivial things. I now receive dividend which is great. All the best to you and your family. Jan Norell, Sweden

I’m so thankful for this video, I tend to be super type A and I’m like an over planner my fiancé and I always say I’m living 5years in the future 😂 which a lot of times prevents me from being current in the moment, it’s something I’m constantly working on. I want our debt gone sooo bad but I have been reminding myself that I’m aware of it, making a conscious effort to get rid of it and it will happen eventually but I have to enjoy right now to like planning our wedding and taking affordable trips to relax and de stress.

I really want to get rid of my student loans, but I don't want to burn out or not take care of myself. I'm hoping in the next 3-5 years I can pay it all. The sooner they're gone, the less I'll end up paying is how I see it.

I love saving challenges to pay off debt or accumulate money for wealth building. For example I love the $1000 Project by sugarmamma and altered it to fit our live better (600€ project). Or sometimes I like to do a savings challenge. And other times I plan to spend money for example I planned to go out for lunch tomorrow.
This is what keeps me motivated in debt payoff and also relaxed

Hmm. I think it depends on the person's life, plans and what works best. Debt makes me itch lol so we're paying it off super fast. Not stressful to me since I'm paying one debt at a time. It more so motivates me but I don't judge others for doing it differently. Now if I had 300k or something like that to pay I'd probably do it your way.

You guys HAVE TO talk about how you managed to do “side hustles” while being attorneys. I’m an attorney and I get out of work anywhere between 6-8 pm and then most nights/weekends are consumed with either working from home, CLEs, networking events, bar associations events, etc... I literally cannot fathom when I’d have the time for a side hustle. If you’ve already spoken on this topic can you direct me to the videos? 🙂

    Do u recommend consolidating help

    • @OneBigHappyLife
      @OneBigHappyLife  4 года назад +7

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. We don't generally recommend paying companies that help you consolidate. But if consolidation makes financial sense, then go straight to a lender so that you can minimize fees.--Tasha
