I just discovered his music this year. He lives just an hour away from where I live. I had no idea. I heard he finally got paid the royalties that was due him for all those years - and thank you folks of South Africa and elsewhere to buying and playing his music. Without ya'll, he would still be unfound.
R.I.P Malik Bendjelloul (sitting next to Rodriguez), you not only brought us a beautiful film about a man who didn't take his life as legend thought, but you brought him back to life and made him the legend he is. It was you in the end who departed the world by your own hands. It's such a tragedy, you were very gifted and you were very worthy of your Oscar. May you rest in peace ♥ x
Wally Idaho workout a doubt- that was hands down the best documentary/story ever told. I was so upset when I heard he had ended his life. May he find peace in the heavens. 💖💫💖
I remember my dad raising me on this music. He used to always use the songs to teach me about the state of the government, and the concept of disestablishmentarianism. He always told me how Rodriguez was basically a philosopher, because his lyrics reflected such painful truths. It was some deep shit, for an 8 year old to listen to, but it burned into my mind. Thanks so much, dad. And thanks so much Rodriguez. You two shaped my perspective on the world.
I grew up in South Africa listening to this man, first on my tape stereo at home with nothing but bootleg copies, I am so glad that finally the world gets to know this man as I got to know him through his music.
@Jason Grooming no you are wrong lol .. how is it a unique way of strumming? this is how classical spanish players strum. like i said millions of people strum that way. just cause you dont know any authentic mexican guitar players and only metallica fanboys doesnt mean you know what youre talking about
After he found out and made money from the tours, he gave the money away to family and friends and still lives at the same house in Detroit. (from the documentary)
When the world refuses to give you your due when it was THE time, then when they come back and try to humour you, what do you do...you realise the irony and in the end give it away.
I watched the film on Rodriguez last night and it is like a fairytale, his story, with a happy ending. He has two lives, and some people know about his one life, and other people know about his second life as a musician, and the two lives are completely sealed from each other. Not so much now. But this film moved me so much. What a gift to music Rodriguez is.
thanks for the comment. he is a genius, and one of the most humble people we've ever had in the studio. Keep playing . . . you'll get there, or at least have a fabulous journey, as music brings so many wonderful things to those who pursue and enjoy it. And check out the other talented musicians and music supervisors Jon McHugh shares.
Joseph Muniz get a classical guitar and dont use a pick, just mess around with it. Im self taught with guitar, thats what i did, and i dont use a pick, just fingers for strumming. Makes a slightly different sound.
What an absolute privilege to be on the couch... during my later high school years 81,82 & 83 in Australia, 'Jesus' as we used to call him, was played around the clock... thereafter, always a friendly voice to listen to and a soundtrack to many of our lives ... I don't think there has ever been a poetic lyricist like him that sings in a clear and concise voice
43 years ago, I heard his music and I bought his albums (33 1/3 rpm LPs) because I just loved it so much. And then, nothing happened. I couldn't believe it! How could this great talent go undiscovered and unrecognized? The answer is: IT COULD NOT! It just took a long time over here in the U.S. THANK YOU Rodriguez for being such a tremendous influence in those early days of my youth. Please finish that 3rd album Sixto. That's an instant purchase for me and I'll buy more than one!.
I’ve never heard of Sixto Rodriguez. But my god, I discovered Sugar Man on amazon prime, and I was blown away. What a STORY. Love him. I’ve been listening to him on Spotify since. Every, single DAY. Love you Sixto! PLEASE make more music!
This man isn't just a singer, or a Jesus like carpenter. He is those things, but he also graduated from grad school.... Humanities, but I am not sure which one he chose. You can see how brilliant his writing is and he absolutely had an understanding of the nature of humans. When I was a virgin, if a guy I was in love with had played me this song, handed me a bowl to smoke, I may have gone ALL the way, lol. Now that is saying a lot. XOXO Sugarman. I love your soul. Jules
Discovered this guy listening to an old record in a girls bedroom in Belfast in 1983. She had just spent a year in South Africa. It was like discovering an alternative Bob Dylan that nobody else knew about. Always loved, always remembered Sixto.
I love how at the start he starts to talk and the journalists just interrupt him so that he can play what they want to hear, not what he wanted to play.

A humble artist ,a one of a kind rock star that doesn’t give a damn about being famous, does what he wants in his own time. With his own original music, have to respect that.
Fabulous Rodriguez... South Africans absolutely loved his album during the 80's. Bought the album. Covered some of his amazing songs at my gigs. What a brilliant artist. I can barely listen to the ra ra music that is out in the market these days. So many superb musical artists of great integrity like him never make it into the public arena. What a great loss. So happy 2 South African producers seized Rodrigues from total obscurity and produced a film about him. He is truely amazing and authentic.
Guy wont hut up talking over him at the start .typical.caffeinated Self projecting blabber mouth Big Respect to Rodriguez What a humble man What a talent What a Story Prayers answered for the humble
There is something so mystical and mysterious about his voice, his playing and his music. It is like he was lost in a time warp and he came back to us. I can't believe we in the west have been kept from hearing his music for 40 years. The stupid record companies that were cashing his commision checks for all those year denied us all the songs we could have grown up on and it's a shame. Those companies who didn't give him his royalties off his sales in South Africa over those 40 years lost so much more money on all the music they could have recorded for him over those years if they weren't so crooked.
+Tim Janakos He had a reasonable amount of success out here in Australia also during those early years and toured a bit during that time. The portrayal in the film of his talent being unrecognised everywhere outside of SA is simply not true; he was very much appreciated as a great artist here in Oz in the 70s and is still loved.
not to mention, i'd be very interested to hear what song of his own he likes the most, but also it's demotivational if people just ask to hear one of your songs, or only see one of your paintings, or have an autograph from only one of your movie characters
I never heard of this singer until today...... I was sitting, in Costco parking lot, listening to my stereo, when some random guy walks up to my window and asks me if I ever heard of Rodriguez. I told him no, and he proceeded to tell me about the life of this artist. I couldn't wait to get home and research him on the computer. I listened to a few of his songs.... and now, am a big fan. So there you go, two white guys in a Costco parking lot in New Brunswick, Canada..... Talking about an artist Named Sixto Rodriguez.......not caring about the color of his skin, or where he's from.....just discussing an amazing talent.. I'm just sorry it took me this long to turn on to his music.
@Redrooster - Hey vermin, calling out virtue signaling clowns like you who condemn anybody as racist at the slightest hint of any possibility is an entirely noble endeavor. You're the troll, soyboy.
RIP Sixto! Glad to have seen you in Amsterdam many years ago, not long after the documentary. Best one I've ever seen and the only film I watched two times in a row just afterwards. Still playing your music. For me you are an all time great... ❤️
His guitar work & his voice has not changed in decades! So glad to have discovered his remarkable talent from that brilliant documentary. He has a lovely family too. One of a kind artist!
+João Pedro Santos - Not just you at all. When I see this, it's like this man is pouring his soul out to these people who are nowhere near as self-aware or respectful, at least as humble. Like you can tell they're from completely different worlds. I almost wanna say they don't deserve to hear it, haha.
Great news for you, the hosts didint actually interput him, but the thing he said was just cutted off. On yt you can find the whole interview where he actually finishes his sentence. :) hope It helps
Such a humble man Look at the way he sits trying not to take any room up making him self smaller While those douche bags and there hipster egos gotta act like they own the whole space. But in reality it’s Rodriguez beautiful soul sound that fills the whole room with overwhelming presence. There not worthy to be in the presence of such a man.
His playing is more than just strumming and picking it’s, a sort of unreal and enchanting sound that only his fingers on that fretboard could produce exactly.
In Colombia (SouthAmercia) I sow the movies. Very good, excelent, Sixto Rodriguez is a great and excelente musician. Thanks Sixto, thanks God for keeps lives him and can know him a his music.
I was fortunate to have seen him perform live in Portland, Or. some years ago. The timbre of his voice had something very special. I only discovered today that he passed.
Rodriguez plays guitar with four fingers. He lost his 4th finger on his left hand in an industrial accident years ago while working as a labourer. He still plays a mean guitar! His song writing is brilliant as is the real life story line in the movie. Watch "Searching for Sugar Man". You'll be glad you did!
Funny, some guy was arguing with me in a thread above that it was his right hand. Go figure, lol. It's impressive, but not as much as Django Reinhardt.
Oh yeah i love Michael Jackson and i could recognize his mimicks among billion and Rodriguez's voice and innocence reminds me of him, two of the purest soul, treasures of this world. People tried to destroy, god didn't let us did it, now they are legends. RIP dear Michael, long life to Rodriguez
My father took me to see him live in Sydney Australia 1979 .he was fkn massive in Australia ,i was 13 but i still enjoyed the event ,mum and dad divorced and it was dads weekend
This man was literally robbed by some producer or producers somewhere. Musical genius!! Makes me cry thinking of the life his family had and should have had. What a man though. What a man!!
His process is so beautiful, and humble, when he sings his voice seems so detached from the kindly man he is, he seem to slip into seance, and how he draws into his instrument his time machine. Could have been great but he shunned the fame, could have been great, but a man is what a man is. Rest gentle, that you will be called again.
Thank you South Africa for giving him his place among the Greats
And Australia
@@viviennetwigg8096 yes ,i was lucky i guess as my father loved hes music ,he also took me to Melbourne to see bob marley a few years later maybe 1980

"Ignored him"? Lol
He just wasn't a thing there, that's like wanker
The documentary was amazing!
Same here in Aus and New Zealand..

Just a strumming technique
I have never heard anyone in my life that played the guitar like he does.

That`s because he does not have a ring finger, If you looks close. He had to find new chord positions.

Robert Johnson played the guitar insanely well too
That voice is just pure silk, even at 71!

Just wow ! LOVE that voice !!
This man was literally robbed by some producer or producers somewhere.
Musical genius!! Makes me cry thinking of the life his family had and should have had.
What a man though. What a man!!
A true artist so pure. I love it .
