Bayle also felt kinda under cooked, DLC dragons in previous souls games had some really nice visual set up, Kalameet met you at the bridge in the royal woods, Sinh woke up upon your arrival and bombarded some shulva knights, Midir harassed you throughout the ringed city. Bayle on the otherhand just kinda shows up and dies immediately. You could argue Igon IS the presentation, and I would argue back that Gough still did it better and without needing to intrude on the foreshadowing. Seems like a wasted opportunity considering how many call backs this DLC had feeling like the Smash Ultimate of Souls and the fact that bayle was visibly wounded off screen. It would have been much cooler if they gave Igon his own cinematic "I wont miss" moment and had him take bayles leg with one of his great arrows causing him to retreat up the jagged peak.

They lightly imply that Rahu is the birthplace of the ancient golem warriors, so why don’t they expand on that instead of adding more useless Scarlet Rot facts. Rellana on the other hand, has by far the most uninteresting dungeon in the DLC, there’s no buildup towards apart from some Carian enemies that just appear them without reason, drops an insane revelation revealing she’s Ranni’s aunt, and then nothing, I don’t know why she followed Mesmer and why she attacks us, it all feels very halfbaked. Meanwhile, Bayle, a secondary boss, despite still having some hazy backstory, has a phenomenal build up with Igon, the dragon man and the overall area. When we reach the top of the mountain we fear Bayle and what he’s capable of, we saw how powerful his minions where, what he did to Igon and the lesser dragon, and the precautions that were put in place to isolate his domain, with Rellana everything was all very underwhelming especially after visiting Belurat and fighting the dancing Lion.
After all this time, beating the DLC twice, I see this video and finally realize that she was the burnt woman cradling the spiral object in the story trailer

One thing I find perhaps the most interesting about Romina is that despite being 2/3 arthropod and having an additional centipede head with extra eyes, she never did fight like one would expect an insect to fight. The centipede head never looks anywhere she isn't facing, and the way she commands it to act is more akin to a limb than an entity of its own, Always in deliberate movements and rarely if ever in tandem with her upper half. It really gives the impression that she has to consciously move and control its positioning which takes great focus, but betrays an innate unfamiliarity with her body. Similarly, the scorpion tail don't often hit on her "left" side despite seemingly having the movement range to do so, if possible she always prefers to turn around to "face" you before delivering a stick. This further suggests that despite being seemingly made out of three creatures merged into one, Romina aren't actually granted any instinctual mastery over it. It's a strange hint of humanity shining through despite her inhuman exterior.
To be fair, IRL centipede eyes aren't nearly as sophisticated as ours, or even other arthropods. They can basically only detect light and dark, so centipedes primarily hunt via scent, touch, and vibration. Doesn't discredit your observation at all - I think you're right on the mark with it, but it does explain why she doesn't use the centipede head to observe more of her surroundings lol.
It looks like each of her legs were transformed into insect bodies and twisted around eachother. The way the insect parts meld into her human torso is pretty morbid, looks like something from the early days of skin grafting.
Man, I really wish we got her floral cape & crown as armor even more now. I love how her Centipede/Scorpion body is two fused insects just like the adult Pests, but with that wicked stinger emerging from the bottom. Her physical body is brutally scarred in ways I'd never noticed before, so thanks again for these close-up looks!!
Weird that FromSoft didn't give her a bigger role. No cutscene, no dialogue, not really mentioned in item descriptions prior to the fight. I genuinely thought I was fighting an optional boss.
I kind of like it actually. We know she has SOME kind of lore relevance cuz she was in the trailer, but the game isn't helping us at all this time. It's completely up to our interpretation.
@eergegerg23 Likely Miquella as he leans harder into charming anything with a pulse, and he did experiment with scarlet rot to try and find a cure to Melanie's infliction, only abled to halt it with Unalloyed Gold. He likely tried to see if he could charm someone converted by the Rot and allow for Melanie to just give in to it or something else. Who knows, overall Fromsoft put more effort into the geography and artificial difficulty with the blessings than much lore not relating to Marika, Mesmer, and Miquella. Honestly with how entwined Miquella is in Melanie's story with the Scarlet Rot you'd think we'd get Miquella assigning his sister as consort and giving her a new vessel rather than Radahn and Mogh wombo combo.
I got a theory Malenia's rot is orange/red - She rejects it, thinking it to be negative Rumina's rot is pink. She accepts it, thinking it to be positive Red/orange rot - The negative side of rot, representing destruction and withering Pink rot - The positive side, representing rebirth/reincarnation

This is probably as close an approximation we'll have to what the outer god of rot looks like: considering Romina fully embraced the rot, it's safe to say she'd take on the god's appearance more and more. Becoming a hybrid of centipede, scorpion, butterfly, and flower are all emblems of the god of rot. Malenia meanwhile only had the butterfly and flower aspects imbedded to her because of how much she fought back
To he completely honest: if this is what God of Rot looks like then God dam. Malenia describe Rot as something horrible and horryfing, while Romina shows something completely different. Yeah, her form is terryfying from the perspective of a human, but this doesn't change the fact there's a morbidly beautiful. It's not just Caelid which she nuked. Rot in itself is a part of life, and there's Beaty in it

One of my favourite attacks of hers is the one where she twirls around trying to hit you with both the centipede and scorpion parts of her body, because it reminds me of the motion a ball gown makes when being danced in, so elegant in such an unconventional way🦋🌺

It took me a minute, but I realized why her colors, and the seeds in her chest are the way they are; She resembles a pomegranate. the seeds in her chest like the seeds of the fruit, the flowering parts of her body resembling the flowers of the plant, and the pale, worn look of her skin resembles the pale, dividing flesh of the fruit, that separates the seed clusters. Pomegranates represent fertility, sanctity, and abundance. With the abundant nature of how the rot behaves, the kindred of rot, and how people like Millicent were ‘born’ from it, it makes sense, in a way.
Ah the girl from the trailer. She embraced the scarlet rot but never destined to be a goddess of the rot. I loved her design but never knew she had a big smile on her face.
The centipede part is intriguing, since as far as I know that wasn’t a creature associated with rot before( unless the pests count), and also what centipedes usually symbolize in fromsoft gsmes
I'd say they definitely are: the pests are most comparable to centipedes than any other creature, so it fits in my mind. If anything the scorpion aspect is what could catch a player off guard if they'd never gotten the scorpion stinger dagger since it's the only thing that suggests (as far as I remember) the god of rot is scorpion-like
Centipedes definitely do have a strong connection with the concept of rot. Stagnation is a primary concern of every fromsoft game and rot is exactly that, another form of stagnation.

Probably the only person i feel sorry to fell victim of messmer flame. She didn't seem do have anything to do with hornsent but her church still got burned, turning her to the scarlet rot
She is not all that highlighted which is a shame since that eerie, faint smile on her face would have probably made for a nice introduction in a cutscene So as far as I understood, Romina was the Keeper/Priestess of the Church atop the Ruins of Rauh and a religious Figure Head to the Hornsent it seems. But in the wake of Messmers Crusade, her Church and likely her Congregation was burned to the Ground and in her dismay she communed with the Outer God of Scarlet Rot to cultivate not only the Red Buds that now bloom all over the Ruins but also became a vessel for the Scarlet Rot it´self She also seems to have taken on the Role of Godmother for the Pests of Aeonia who Malenia created but holds no love for I feel as if she is a bit of a re-imagening of the Fair Lady from Blighttown in Dark Souls I

Romina’s design is absolutely AMAZING!!! I wonder why she wasn’t given a more prominent role in the DLC considering how she’s the one character who has accepted the rot god’s influence (also no concept art?! What the heck?!) but regardless of her role they absolutely BALLED with this design (i’m literally losing my mind over how pretty she is. Also that stinger did some psychic damage to me).

i haven’t seen anyone talk about this, but isn’t it kinda obvious that romina is like the other half of malenia? her body looks a lot like trina, she’s the only other character to ever be called a “saint”, her theme is reminescent of phase 2 malenia, every other child of marika and radagon seems to have another personality or being within them (the snake thing in messmer and the gloam eyed queen in melina) and marika herself has radagon as another half of her. this might also be related to the butterflies theory but idk about that.
It would have been interesting but no.... why? Santa Trina also dies when we defeat Miquella and depending on who you face first (Malenia or Romina) the other should also die

Gorgeous creature ! I loved her even if we don't know much about her except that she was the guardian of the Church of the Bud and she's trying to prevent the Tarnished from burning the sealing tree.
I recently found the picture "Rosalie saw before her eyes a tree of marvellous beauty" and instantly thought about Romina, guarding the Sealing Tree behind her church.
So does this mean Rot is connected to Death in terms of entities? The Cursemark of Death is considered the mark of the Centipede. Scorpions seem to have more of a relationship to rot, considering the way to make X-proof pickled livers is with the addition of a scorpion liver in crafting. Still trying to figure out how deep this cult of the bud goes.
gotta remember the order of rot is a cycle of DEATH and REBIRTH. If death is indicated by a centipede, a scorpion would be the symbol of rebirth. I went looking through the scorpion-themed items and found out that the scorpion talismans all specify the scorpion has freshly molted, which to me only strengthens their connection to rebirthing.

This is my favorite "bug-lady" design from From Software. It's the first one that doesn't just feel like "Naked lady plastered on top of gross bug". Instead, it's a gross yet beautiful hodgepodge of insect parts, that work together strangely harmoniously, while also feeling more in tune with the theme of the character (Both centipedes and scorpions tend to be venomous, and butterflies tend to like flowers, with both flowers and venom having allusions to the Scarlet Rot).
I have zero drawing or animation skills so I have to use my words, but with the petals on her head and cape I think a really cool intro animation for her would have been if she was initially coiled up with petals covering her, looking like a rose, which slowly unfurls and uncoils to reveal first her torso then the centipede/scorpion halves

Scorpions have very little lateral tail mobility, and can only sting directly in front of them. So that part isn't too surprising

I kind of like it actually. We know she has SOME kind of lore relevance cuz she was in the trailer, but the game isn't helping us at all this time. It's completely up to our interpretation.
@eergegerg23 Likely Miquella as he leans harder into charming anything with a pulse, and he did experiment with scarlet rot to try and find a cure to Melanie's infliction, only abled to halt it with Unalloyed Gold. He likely tried to see if he could charm someone converted by the Rot and allow for Melanie to just give in to it or something else. Who knows, overall Fromsoft put more effort into the geography and artificial difficulty with the blessings than much lore not relating to Marika, Mesmer, and Miquella.
Honestly with how entwined Miquella is in Melanie's story with the Scarlet Rot you'd think we'd get Miquella assigning his sister as consort and giving her a new vessel rather than Radahn and Mogh wombo combo.
She was the maiden embracing a spear in the history trailer it seems

Malenia's rot is orange/red - She rejects it, thinking it to be negative
Rumina's rot is pink. She accepts it, thinking it to be positive
Red/orange rot - The negative side of rot, representing destruction and withering
Pink rot - The positive side, representing rebirth/reincarnation

This is probably as close an approximation we'll have to what the outer god of rot looks like: considering Romina fully embraced the rot, it's safe to say she'd take on the god's appearance more and more. Becoming a hybrid of centipede, scorpion, butterfly, and flower are all emblems of the god of rot. Malenia meanwhile only had the butterfly and flower aspects imbedded to her because of how much she fought back
To he completely honest: if this is what God of Rot looks like then God dam. Malenia describe Rot as something horrible and horryfing, while Romina shows something completely different. Yeah, her form is terryfying from the perspective of a human, but this doesn't change the fact there's a morbidly beautiful. It's not just Caelid which she nuked. Rot in itself is a part of life, and there's Beaty in it

One of my favourite attacks of hers is the one where she twirls around trying to hit you with both the centipede and scorpion parts of her body, because it reminds me of the motion a ball gown makes when being danced in, so elegant in such an unconventional way🦋🌺

the seeds in her chest like the seeds of the fruit, the flowering parts of her body resembling the flowers of the plant, and the pale, worn look of her skin resembles the pale, dividing flesh of the fruit, that separates the seed clusters.
Pomegranates represent fertility, sanctity, and abundance. With the abundant nature of how the rot behaves, the kindred of rot, and how people like Millicent were ‘born’ from it, it makes sense, in a way.

The centipede part is intriguing, since as far as I know that wasn’t a creature associated with rot before( unless the pests count), and also what centipedes usually symbolize in fromsoft gsmes
I'd say they definitely are: the pests are most comparable to centipedes than any other creature, so it fits in my mind. If anything the scorpion aspect is what could catch a player off guard if they'd never gotten the scorpion stinger dagger since it's the only thing that suggests (as far as I remember) the god of rot is scorpion-like

Centipedes definitely do have a strong connection with the concept of rot. Stagnation is a primary concern of every fromsoft game and rot is exactly that, another form of stagnation.

I loved that Malenia motiff in the Romina's theme.
She is not all that highlighted which is a shame since that eerie, faint smile on her face would have probably made for a nice introduction in a cutscene
So as far as I understood, Romina was the Keeper/Priestess of the Church atop the Ruins of Rauh and a religious Figure Head to the Hornsent it seems.
But in the wake of Messmers Crusade, her Church and likely her Congregation was burned to the Ground and in her dismay she communed with the Outer God of Scarlet Rot to cultivate not only the Red Buds that now bloom all over the Ruins but also became a vessel for the Scarlet Rot it´self
She also seems to have taken on the Role of Godmother for the Pests of Aeonia who Malenia created but holds no love for
I feel as if she is a bit of a re-imagening of the Fair Lady from Blighttown in Dark Souls I

going by his Characteristics he must be a sibling to Malenia, Melina and Miquella and therefore stem from the marriage of Marika and Radagon post Godfrey, but the Crusade must have ocurred before Godfreys era if one is to believe that Marikas Omen Twins Morgott and Mohg are a result of the Hornsents Curse - and if they are not and Messmer is the first Child she had with Radagon post Godfrey, then a generous time window would have to exist between his and Melinas birth and that of Miquella and Malenia

I love how Rotten Butterflies states Romina took in Malenia's butterflies after we kill her. For all that she's fighting us, I feel like she was quite the gentle soul before the Crusade.

This is what makes Elden ring so wonderful - there’s little story to her so we create our own story that feels so personal
Romina’s design is absolutely AMAZING!!! I wonder why she wasn’t given a more prominent role in the DLC considering how she’s the one character who has accepted the rot god’s influence (also no concept art?! What the heck?!) but regardless of her role they absolutely BALLED with this design (i’m literally losing my mind over how pretty she is. Also that stinger did some psychic damage to me).
Romina is definitely one of my favourite boss designs fromsoft have made combined with a great ost and fight
Edit: a shame that she doesn’t have a cutscene would love to know more about her

i haven’t seen anyone talk about this, but isn’t it kinda obvious that romina is like the other half of malenia? her body looks a lot like trina, she’s the only other character to ever be called a “saint”, her theme is reminescent of phase 2 malenia, every other child of marika and radagon seems to have another personality or being within them (the snake thing in messmer and the gloam eyed queen in melina) and marika herself has radagon as another half of her. this might also be related to the butterflies theory but idk about that.

I recently found the picture "Rosalie saw before her eyes a tree of marvellous beauty" and instantly thought about Romina, guarding the Sealing Tree behind her church.
Tbh. I think this confirms the rot god. If it has some sort of physical “form” or a servant like the Elden beast. It’s a bigass scorpion

The Cursemark of Death is considered the mark of the Centipede. Scorpions seem to have more of a relationship to rot, considering the way to make X-proof pickled livers is with the addition of a scorpion liver in crafting.
Still trying to figure out how deep this cult of the bud goes.
gotta remember the order of rot is a cycle of DEATH and REBIRTH. If death is indicated by a centipede, a scorpion would be the symbol of rebirth. I went looking through the scorpion-themed items and found out that the scorpion talismans all specify the scorpion has freshly molted, which to me only strengthens their connection to rebirthing.

This is my favorite "bug-lady" design from From Software. It's the first one that doesn't just feel like "Naked lady plastered on top of gross bug". Instead, it's a gross yet beautiful hodgepodge of insect parts, that work together strangely harmoniously, while also feeling more in tune with the theme of the character (Both centipedes and scorpions tend to be venomous, and butterflies tend to like flowers, with both flowers and venom having allusions to the Scarlet Rot).
I have zero drawing or animation skills so I have to use my words, but with the petals on her head and cape I think a really cool intro animation for her would have been if she was initially coiled up with petals covering her, looking like a rose, which slowly unfurls and uncoils to reveal first her torso then the centipede/scorpion halves
