Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Colin seems like a good person. It's terrible that their marriage is over. I feel that if someone wants out of a relationship, just break up and go your separate ways. Why cheat on your spouse? That's just low down and disrespectful.

If you have to constantly tell the world that your relationship is perfect, you’re really signaling insecurity about that relationship, hoping that by constantly praising your partner’s divine qualities, s/he will have to stay or risk publicly breaking that perfect picture. In this case, Firth was obviously the insecure partner.
