His Oscar nomination for best actor in a supporting role as Sgt. Elias in Platoon (1986) made him the unstoppable, hardworking force of nature we know and love today. To be honest I did similar. When I was young I just eventually gave in and stopped correcting people to "make it easy". But as I got older I learned the origin and history of names, and knew much more people with more interesting names that could also explain their names orgins. And so my pronunciation went back and I corrected people wanting to not just gloss over history, and took more care in learning other peoples proper name pronunciation. I did pretty much this same thing. My entire life, up to early adulthood, my last name was pronounced one way. I found it ugly, it confused people, and was just a hassle.
