Mr. Dafoe has received critical acclaim since the early/mid 1980’s. A few of his earliest breakout roles were as villains in To Live and Die in LA (1985) and Streets of Fire (1984). His Oscar nomination for best actor in a supporting role as Sgt. Elias in Platoon (1986) made him the unstoppable, hardworking force of nature we know and love today. OT: I think Walton Goggins, Jr. is to tv character actors as Willem Dafoe is to film. Both are brilliant.

To be honest I did similar. When I was young I just eventually gave in and stopped correcting people to "make it easy". But as I got older I learned the origin and history of names, and knew much more people with more interesting names that could also explain their names orgins. And so my pronunciation went back and I corrected people wanting to not just gloss over history, and took more care in learning other peoples proper name pronunciation.
And yes, in hollywood your name is a trademark. You want it to be both familiar but also distinct sounding.

I did pretty much this same thing. My entire life, up to early adulthood, my last name was pronounced one way. I found it ugly, it confused people, and was just a hassle. I changed how i pronounce it to fit better with how it's spelled and it still confuses some people but not nearly as much and i actually like my name now. Ironically i met a distant cousin (our grandfathers were brothers) and her part of the family always pronounced our name the way i changed mine but she changed the pronunciation to the way my side of the family had before.
