Back in 98'ish I lived in Iowa. I worked for a small company and we all went to Valley Fair as a company outing. We were a grain elevator maintence company. It took me a LONG time to wrap my head around parks these size. I grew up 45 minutes from Cedar Point. So it took quite a while to imagine a park that didn’t have insane coasters at every corner.
There what a short time in the late 90s early 2000 when Cedar Fair operated the Park Camp Snoopy at the Mall of America. Camp Snoopy was the original name of the park before it was Nickelodeon Universe. They gave me free passes to Valley Fair for being an operator at the Mall of America. I know Valleyfair seemed to have more mild rides but I enjoyed that it was a smaller Park and the lines weren't nearly as bad as other big parks.
I drove from Orlando to Carowinds by myself earlier this year. It took 36 hours. Totally worth it. I didn’t mind going by myself - it seemed like in every line there were other enthusiasts to make friends with. Gotta get the credits man. Good times!
Flooding? Yeah, Valleyfair is located in the Minnesota River valley, not far from the river and the lakes & ponds that dot the river course. In hindsight, it was built too close to the river (built in 1978?)--during "heavy rain" years, Renegade, Excalibur, and the parking lots can all get flooded. Last year (2019-very heavy rain), the parking lot was still flooded in August (but not the coasters). And its "mild" rating of coasters? Yeah, I'd agree except for Renegade--definitely much better the later the season gets. My second favorite is Wild Thing. Some of the rides I loved are no longer there, unfortunately (Huss Enterprise, for instance, and the Looping Starship was removed at the end of 2019). With the water park being integrated with the rest of the park (way back when, it was an "extra charge" attraction, now it's included with admission) that can be a great way to cool off, and the slides are decent. As for the ride operators being less than enthusiastic? I've noticed that, but they also hire a lot of foreigners (college students, I presume) who might not have a penchant for faking said enthusiasm. ;) Having to say the same announcement over & over again would get quite exhausting, IMO. lol Someone else mentioned that Valleyfair lives up to the description of MN - Mild. Agreed--I wish they would add more coasters although I am unsure how much land they have to build on, especially given its proximity to a river that's prone to flooding.
That's nuts -- I was there the day before you. I had a business trip to Minneapolis, and I stopped by the Mall of America on the way to the airport before I left. Sadly, I couldn't stay an extra day to get Valley Fair.
