    Any EV owners have experiences of long trips like this?

      I could tell you about 12 hours to cover 120 miles in my Peugeot iOn (yes, waiting for multiple rapid charges). Maybe that's why I still haven't given up hope for the MG5 LR that I ordered at the start of January and doubt I'll see before 2023 . . .

      Yes but i plan my trips to minimise en route charging (eg I expect to arrive low and charge at destination if possible) and bought a car that minimises it , 250 real miles near 300 in summer,. In the UK 300 miles is a long way. Charging at destination (by choosing that when possible, for example pick holiday let that has charging even if 3 pin only) mean that en route charging is rare and i have several options on the way so i never have to wait for charging i can move on to next stop which i have done.
      For example, annual 300 mile trip (each way) I just need to add 75 miles at some point to give me a 25-50 mile buffer when i arrive and charge at destination on 3 pin even though it takes more than a day. Or last week, holiday trip, 180 miles each way, charge at holiday cottage that allowed charging (it a was an extra £20 for the week but well worth it I added about 400-500 miles since i drove around whilst there but all charging was overnight (on their cheap rate EV charger) so no waiting.
      Later I'll be driving 200 miles to an airbnb that has charging (filtered my criteria to get one that does) so again no need to find an en route charger. If I was camping I'd pick a camp site that allowed charging unless it was absolutely exceptional after all the point is not to be motoring around when camping (Id assume) so let the car charge slowly whilst out walking or sat in tent avoiding rain.
      That also means freeing up chargers for those with shorter range cars or who cant charge at home. I think its going to be quite a few years before the network is enough its only just holding its own now because waiting times for EVs are so long !
      There was a review maybe 6 months ago when two presenters drove the Scottish 500 mile route (forgot what its called) and made a big fuss about how close they were cutting it in their Ioniq 5 at points (which has what, 250 miles range?). I guess that made for a more entertaining / exciting programme than " we stopped twice overnight and charged up each time without hassle so there was no issue at all", and thats what you should do as an EV driver. Its not the same as petrol. Change your habits to adapt, treat en route chargers as to be avoided if possible and it will be much less hassle.

      Yes! I have an Audi etron and have taken it to the alps twice for skiing. Family of 4 with all the luggage and ski gear. Having to stop to charge and fitting that with coffee and food breaks makes for a really relaxing journey. And the lack of noise and vibration makes an EV trip less fatiguing. Wish it came with adaptive cruise like your MG though! France has great charging infrastructure. In the U.K. it’s not as good. Just not reliable enough and not always enough stalls, but it’s adequate and doesn’t put me off long trips in the U.K. Videos of the trips on my own channel.

      @@ski_tron2446 Finding it the opposite. There's a lot less motorway service stations in France than in the UK, and they tend to be smaller as well. In the UK there seems to be a service station every 20-30 minutes of driving, here in France I can drive for 1 hour without seeing a station with charging infrastructure.

    Sadly, The long range MG5 wasn't released until a few weeks after me collecting my MG5 but I have to say other than missing ACC, I've not been disappointed. Like you, I tend to drive in eco mode with level 3 Kerrs and sit at around 65 - 70 MPH. In fact I now tend to avoid motorways and enjoy a far more relaxed driving experience. I have made a few trips now from Cambridge to Cornwall and Devon without incident and I would never go back to an ICE car. I look forward to more videos, enjoy your car.

      Hello again. Our car arrived a week ago and, having been a lifelong petrol head (my toy car is a Caterham), I am astonished!
      A full charge on Zappi eco mode coupled with solar panels cost around £1‼️ A full charge on E7 nighttime rate looks like it would cost around £8 - less than 4p/mile!
      As far as driving dynamics go, I haven’t noticed any body roll on bends, the weight doesn’t make itself apparent and the acceleration in Eco mode is more than I will ever need. My wife likes the slightly higher seating position and the lack of gear shifting and the smallest granddaughter likes the all round visibility from the rear seat. No negatives yet (unless the lack of MG sill protection counts) and a 600 mile round trip coming up soon. 👍🏻

    • @BarryCatt
      @BarryCatt 2 года назад

      PS:
      The long trip and the first couple of weeks of ownership have been completed. Zappi + eco🍃 mode has cost us around £0.0015 per mile! Numbers so small that they don’t register on my spreadsheet!
      We were pleased to find that Gridserve had charging points at two of our usual watering holes along the A1, so we stopped at them both for a splash’n’dash both ways. In reality, we could’ve made the trip easily with one stop each way, but we’re retired and knocking on a bit now so we took the leisurely approach. The Gridserve cost was less than 11p/mile as opposed to our previous Civic cost of 23p/mile!
      Good luck and keep up the good work!

    Very interesting video. Thanks! I couldn't agree more with your comments about the insufficiency of the charging infrastructure. I just can't see how we're ever going to have enough public chargers. Furthermore, so far, I think most EV drivers have chosen to make the change and probably have the patience to wait for an available charger without it being too much of an issue. But in due course I think there'll be a cultural shift and I doubt patience will be prioritised by reluctant EV drivers who have been compelled/mandated to join us. And that's not going to be much fun for anyone. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Very generous of you.

    Loving the chanel, stumbled upon it by accident since having an MG5 on rental. I love the car (it's my partners company car, so she has it on long term rental). I actualy end up driving it more often than her. I think the biggest issue we have, is it seems so hit and miss what charger will work with the MG5. We previously had a Hyundia Ioniq, and pretty much every charger worked with it. Since having the MG5, we seem to find the only points that want to work with it, are Instavolt, or Tescos free.chargers. it's a shame, as, I absolutely love the car, but it brings in an extra level of anxiety we could do without.

    About to do 500 miles from East Midlands to Scarborough and around. We are cautious on range and will start off just shy of 250 miles and will need to charge 3 times at least for about 30 minutes. My MG5 is less than a month old and has just gone over 1000 miles. Only used public charges twice before going to Oxfordshire. It's winter and we have no apps installed. It's an act of faith because we don't know where the chargers are but with a million Evs on the road we will get there somehow.

    Interesting choices for rapid chargers ….. everyone always goes on about the new services at Rugby but the 12 non-Tesla chargers here have to serve 4 motorway streams - M6 north/west, M6 east, M1 north and south. So that means 3 per stream/carriageway on average especially when everybody is piling off for their lunchtime break. Go a little further north/west on M6 to next services and Corley has 10 northbound (8 Instavolt and 2 Gridserve) and 9 south/east (7 Instavolt and 2 Gridserve). They are slower (50 - 75) than newer chargers but never had problem getting on them even at peak times.

    The charging infrastructure is _okay_ like you said, but it becomes a big problem when you need to do a round trip. I live in the north east and a friend is flying into Edinburgh. I was going to drive to get him and my EV6 can almost do the full journey there and back, but the chargers in Scotland are all in odd locations and/or dog slow, and since you drive through Northumberland to get to Scotland, which is very rural, you end up with nothing for miles; even petrol stations are few and far between up there.
    If I was driving up there to stay a night then I'd have zero issues with charging, but a round trip? Oof. What's annoying is that if it was in the other direction, Edinburgh to Newcastle to Edinburgh, then I could do a round trip in one shot because Newcastle and Sunderland have a boatload of 150kw+ chargers. It's just so inconsistent.

    Great video, really enjoyed it! It reflects the experience I have had with my MG5 (standard version though, not LR) when I've been on long journeys. A few things: 1. Did you have any problems with Android Auto (if you use that)? For some reason on mine it is quite fiddly and won't always connect which is frustrating; 2. Would you mind giving us a breakdown of the total journey numbers in the video description (e.g. how much charge you used, total distance, average kw/h, total spend on charging)? 3. I've found with motorway journeys (and drives generally) where there is little traffic that KERS1 is maybe more efficient than KERS3 because there is more roll and thus a longer reg-charge when you're slowing down with KERS1. KERS3 seems best when there is more stopping involved because traffic. So I'm wondering if you've tried this; 4. I was impressed by your kw/h for the motorway driving, especially your first journey where there was less traffic (I'm presuming). I have found that the weather plays a huge role - when I drove from London to Cornwall this past winter, I was getting 2.8kw/h sometimes in my car (when there was little traffic) and I think that was mostly down to the cold but also the weight. Nowadays the efficiency is so much better - I've seen over 5kw/h sometimes. Anyway, look forward to more of your videos. Cheers

      1. Android Auto was originally playing up for me, but I switched cable and it's been fine since- might be worth a try! It does seem to take longer to connect than my wife's phone on Apple CarPlay.
      2. Yes I'll probably do a follow up video with some stats in.
      3. I was in KERS 3 on the motorway, but also had adaptive cruise control on. I believe the computer overrides whatever KERS setting is on in that case. But I'm not sure if your version of the SR has ACC? But I completely agree with you about using KERS 1 if I was driving manually!
      4. Yeah the rain seemed to have much more of an impact on the range that I expected. I'm interested and slightly worried about how the car will do in winter- but I'll definitely be making some videos about it!

    Thanks for this realistic life with an MG 5 video. I have one on order, so any tips welcome. SUVs are less efficient than estates as they are heavier and less aerodynamic. They also kill more pedestrians. The very good value of the MG 5 is the clincher.
    The unpredictable nature of the national charging network means EVs are ok for leisure use when deadlines are flexible and for short journeys covered by home-charging. Not sure I'd want an EV for long work trips, unless the boss bought me a Tesla and access to the Tesla charging network. Pity this isn't Norway, where the EV charger network is planned by an intelligent government who understand climate change.

    What sort of speed where you doing on the motorway and did you adjust KERS and have aircon? 49% at Rugby looks pretty good. What was the A41 like overall? That's the route that I've chosen (A41) for the end of the month up to St Asaph, in preference to the multi-roundabout and often congested A5. But, apart from a 10min top-up at Cobham, we're planning to stop at Banbury, just off the M40 motorway where there are Instavolt (16), Osprey (6) and Tesla (12) chargers, so just enough choice(?) followed by maybe a panic top up at Market Drayton's 2 Instavolts. I'm trying to avoid overcrowded Motorway services!

    • @OurEvUK
      @OurEvUK  2 года назад +1

      The adaptive cruise control was set to 65mph on the motorway, kers was 3 (but I don't think that it makes a difference when acc is on) and the aircon was on. The A41 is normally pretty good and fairly pleasent to drive. Not many overtaking opportunities so the occasional very slow driver can be an issue. And no chargers to be found, so make sure you've got plenty of charge at that point in the journey! But it sounds as though you've done some good planning already and you'll be fine! That's a lot of chargers at Banbury, we need more of that!
