I'm from Germany. And I'm not saying that this case is similar, or it's the same. I'm not suggesting anything.
But ... if I would fly the flag of what once my country was, a flag which also stands for racism, maybe not so much for slavery per se, but political and ideological persecution and genocide, people around here would not only take me down themselves, but it would also be illegal. My grandfather fought in the Wehrmacht against the americans in France and lost a leg. But even I, just like most Germans, am incredibly ashamed of what Germany did. How Americans can justify what the Confederacy did and actually be proud of it, is for me as a foreigner and German, beyond me.

***** Still you can find people who are openly pro Nazi regime even in Czech Rep. now trying t blame other races for some social problems in country (especially gypsies). Unfortunately these ideologies and groups will always exist with flag or without it. Level of ignorance in US is just over 9000 and fact that they were not punished for that ideology makes it even easier to forget. On the other side Germany was punished hard two times. First time economically for WW1 which lead WW2 and then they were split by wall into two countries. It would be like if Germany lost the war but Hitler would live another 30 years. Who knows what would happened.

M4TRIXed This really surprised me because I thought of patriotism in the large sense of the US as a country. I didn't even think about the identity of Ex-Confederate states and how it is for people living there. It was just something I never considered living far away from those states. Like within American pride there are sub-categories with the civil war as divisive.

Dong Lee As in the argument to take the flag down or for something else? I thought the points of recognising and giving context to Southern identity and the right of flying it vs. the flag as a symbol/ the way black people have been treated in the South were very strong in the argument of getting people to inform themselves of these issues. I mean, I never really thought of the identity of Ex-Confederate states that much since I don't live close to those states.

An think logically about why it's up there and why it shouldn't be . the fact that there are so many movements that seem to be accepted in today's society why can't this flag be taken down with a fucking debate about what it means

A small but important correction: after 31:31 Colin says that Rhodesia was Apartheid South Africa. Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) has a British colonial history, whereas South Africa has a British and Dutch colonial history.

I'm not American and don't want to cause offence but maybe, just maybe, if unbalanced, ignorant, racist, stupid people didn't have such easy and relatively unrestricted access to guns it wouldn't be so much of a problem.
There's only so long things like this can continue to happen without needing to have a serious look at why people like this nutjob are able to get their hands on lethal weaponry with such frequency.

No offense but since you're not American you may want to do some research. Like the fact that 90% of murders are done with guns obtained illegally or the fact that Chicago is the murder capitol of America despite hand guns being completely illegal in Chicago.

    • @Hawkeye19821

theDamon2781 Yes but guns are still very easy to obtain legally or illegally im America. In the UK I wouldn't know where to get black market guns. I'm sure it's easy enough but it's not in our makeup as much and not in our thoughts either. In regards to the Chicago reference, it's pointless having a discussion because you are so far into gun culture and biased that you will ignore like your fellow countrymen all of the millions of different examples that having guns is not a good thing for society. Americans are backwards in every social issue compared to Europe. It is a tremendously zealous and ignorant country in general and holds all of the amendments in such high regards as a religious text. They need updating for modern times as does your country's attitude towards black people, health care, education etc etc. You are a fucking joke to the rest of tye world. As I've gotten older, I've come to some sad realizations that have made life a tough pill to swallow. No matter how much we work at it, racism will outlive us all. You can educate yourself like Colin said but then the only thing you achieve in doing so is becoming self aware of how insignificant you are against the powers that govern this world. As I've grown older I've become more of an atheist than the Christian I was raised to be but that being said there is still a part of me that wishes there was a divine power that would come down and right all the wrongs of humanity. As a lifelong Southerner, I have to say that our interpretation of the Northern War of Aggression is vastly different than the history lesson that Colin gave. I am not saying that either side is correct, I know Colin has studied this a lot more that I have...but none of us were alive back then and know the real truth, so I think there is probably revisionists on both sides, and I can only speak to what I have been taught. So this hopefully will give some of you insight into what we believe. Maybe we are way off, but we are not racists (some are, there are racists everywhere unfortunately), we don't use the flag to hold anyone down. It IS about pride as Greg stated, it IS about heritage. I am proud that my ancestors stood up to a tyrannical government and I hope we will do the same if it ever comes to that.
I own a "confederate" flag, it is folded up in a closet, not out on display, but I do have friends that have car stickers / tattoos etc. None of us are in the klan, none of us see it as a symbol of hatred. To us it represents southern pride, period. Not white pride, not racist pride, but pride in our heritage, pride in our ancestors, and pride in all southerners.
We were taught and believe that the southern states seceded because they were being unfairly taxed without being represented in the government (sound familiar?? Don't tread on me). The south was suppling 85% of the countries revenue that was then mostly used to build the northern economy. Less than 2% of the population owned slaves, and there were slave owners in the north too. The war was over money & control as most wars are. I am sure that the rich plantation owners were fighting to keep their free labor, but the other 98% were fighting for their states, for their families, to defend their homes. We seceded as was allowed in the constitution and became the confederate states. The north (Lincoln) was not going to let that happen and loose all that revenue. The northerners even went so far as to not let some states vote on seceding. Colin says it wasn't over states' rights, but that is what we truly belive it was over. Lincoln didn't fight to end slavery, that was an afterthought 3 years into the war - only done to hurt the south, and the emancipation proclamation only freed the slaves in the confederate states! Lincoln was fighting to keep the goods & agriculture & revenue the south provided. The south was fighting for freedom from the north, the north was fighting to keep the union in tact. The confederates were not traitors that should be hanged, we belonged to our states first, not the unfair government. And the south did have a long recovery as Colin stated, the war destroyed many cities. That is why we have so many memorials down here, there is one just a few miles from my house that has an annual reenactment (Olustee). I don't think people from outside of the south really get how much that war is a part of our lives here. Our schools, towns, and roads are all named after generals & politicians of the time. Our state parks are war memorials where battles were fought and our ancestors were killed.
Just wanted to give a little perspective from a southern, before you all just assume it is about race, this is why we are fighting to keep the flag & memorials. We can't change history, but we can all learn from it and grow from it.

I was born and raised in SC and have never even traveled outside of the southern US. That being said, I agree 100%. I never would have thought that something this tragic would happen here - that we would be the ones on constant news feeds like I've seen so many other communities. My heart goes out to those families. As for that flag - I have family members and friends who have long worn that symbol, flown it on pickup trucks, etc. It has been my experience that those ppl are racist. To claim that the flag is not a symbol of that is complete ignorance. The fact is that the confederate flag was raised on TOP of the SC Statehouse, in Columbia, just after desegregation in the south. In the early 2000s, after much debate and protest, it was moved to a confederate memorial on the statehouse grounds. After this tragic incident in Charleston, the American flag on top of the statehouse was lowered to half staff, while the confederate flag was flown high. My opinion is that anyone who wants to wear it or fly in on their property and make themselves look like fools - go right ahead. It lets me know who you are and that I do not wish to associate with you. But it should NOT be flown on statehouse or any other government property.
I have ancestors that fought for the CSA and my southern heritage goes back to the early 1700s. I am not racist, nor was I raised in any way to think that I am superior to anyone. I hope that everyone can see past the media hype enough to know that not all southerners are ignorant hicks, and in fact, most are not. I am hoping that these discussions will bring about the much needed change here in SC and throughout the south!

As someone who grew up in the South and later moved, I think the whole debate of removing the confederate battle flag is a happy side effect out of another terrible tragedy. The flag really is a reminder of how fucked up southern mentality still is (particularly in rural areas like where I was raised and usually not in major population hubs) and how we still have to deal with their nonsense after over a century removed from the Civil War instead of sweeping it under the rug. Statues and busts of famous slavers and founders of the KKK? They really don't see a problem with that. Perhaps it's an instance where we can further "de-southernize" them culturally and politically even if it is in just a small way. Hear me out: I think the biggest mistake that the US made in its history was how it dealt with the South after the Civil War. They were traitors. They committed high treason. If the North would've executed Davis, Lee, all their cronies, and placed the South under military occupation for 50 years, and "de-southernized" the South politically and culturally like the Allies de-nazified Germany, the entire country would have been so much better off. To this day, I still struggle to understand why Southerners celebrate the Civil War so much. They must be the only people on the planet who keep celebrating a war that they lost. Germans don't still fly Nazi flags like the South does with the confederate flag saying it's their "culture," and name their kids after war generals, do they? Old Germans don't try to defend what happened in their history by citing "states rights." They are ashamed of their past. But, oh...not the South. They are proud of it. Imagine a United States without the South holding back both social AND scientific progress for 150 years. Because, let's face it, it's still the South holding us back in regards to issues like climate change, teaching science in classrooms, etc.

I'm from western Oklahoma, (which is the most desolate place in the world) and I can say with certainty that the confederate flag is a sign of racism. I know hundreds of individuals that own the confederate flag, and they all say its a sign of southern pride. This issue is that I've seen these same individuals engage in very racist behavior and conversation, so I have trouble believing anyone who says its just a sign of southern pride.

  • @tH3xChAd

Full disclosure: I am a Southerner from Louisiana.
I do not fly the Confederate flag or any flag really. I would consider Colin's Don't Tread on Me flag which honestly is flown more in the area that I live than the confederate flag.
South Carolina's reason for seceding was heavily based on slavery, but it was not the only reason as for many of the other states economic controls like Tariffs played a huge part due to the north at the time having better representation in Congress they passed tariffs that favored their own industries and hurt the agrarian aspect of the south. There are many reasons for that conflict, but it's important to know that the union was a union of sovereign states and each state had a right to leave if they wished. Leaving the union itself was not treason. The north had a better moral claim only because the south would not give up slavery. I don't think it was necessary to fight a war over slavery as the British gave a good example of how to end it without such conflict.

No it is outdated at this point. At this point you have consumers and game developers that want/are making female protagonists games. You have those that don't give a shit about females and want all male protagonists. Than you have the majority that are tired of hearing about it and just don't give a shit anymore.

I live in Illinois now, but I a black male grew up in Texas. I have been the target of racism in a few instances and mostly just brushed it off because im not going to be insulted by someone with the IQ of a grapefruit. I went to a small school that was predominantly white and I saw many instances of people proudly raising the Stars and bars or even going as far as using it as their phone background. These people were not necessarily racist but they did have a racist way about them. Similar to what Greg said about being a stupid kid and being insensitive to gays they threw around the 'N' word like it just ment Damn it. Kids in these schools are not acting smart to begin with but they are also being influenced by a culture that says that its cool to be stupid and intolerant. This is a problem that needs to be stoped with teaching people tolerance at a young age.

I'm not sure if people know this but the swastica was actually used by Hindu and Buddhist people for thousands of years. It was a symbol of peace , harmony, and equality. However the Nazis manipulated this symbol for evil purposes , tainting the connotation that the symbol once had. I'm a Hindu and one time during a cultural presentation, I actually showed the swasitica since my religion says that its a symbol of peace. However I got sent to the principles office for what I did. Anyways I just wanted to tell people that the symbol is very spiritual for many Indians and is only meant to spread harmony and friendship, instead of injustice and racism.

The simplest and one of the very few possible answers to the problem with racism IMO is education. We need to implement teachings of what the civil war TRULY meant (amongst many other events) into our schools (particularly history classes or "Race and Social Justice" classes like we have in my school) and do it for the actual knowledge and understanding instead of a grade to pass the class so that the knowledge can be absorbed and spread.

As a New Zealander this is the most amount of education I've ever gotten on this period of United States history (I feel like United should be in quotes after seeing the video); we don't cover it in school down here, or at least when I was in school in the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean it's at the point where I mixed up the Civil and Revolutionary Wars when I was making a meme!

    • @endorbr
      @endorbr 9 лет назад +1

KBABZ This is some slanted stuff presented here and not the best place to get an education on the facts of the American Civil War or the modern representation or symbolism of the Confederate battle flag. As a New Zealander it isn't honestly that relevant to you for anything other than an interest in knowledge or that particular period of American history so its understandable why you might mix things up. I personally have studied the period quite a bit over the years and it is pretty informative on the mindset of modern America if you have the perspective. Most of the issues behind the war never did get resolved and there is still an obvious divide in ideologies today. As you can see in this discussion some see the flag as a symbol of racism and hatred while others see it as a symbol of pride and cultural heritage. It's all about perspective and who is writing the history.

I remember going to buy a cigarette case for my rollies years back and the only case they had was a red one with the confederate flag on it (this is in NY so it makes sense that those were the only ones left in stock). Any way, I bought it and as soon as I got to my car I scratched the flag off with my car keys.
I get what Greg was saying about the South getting shit on a lot and people clinging to some unifying icon and not really caring about its historical context. I don't think the flag should be outlawed, I can still scratch it off if need be :) but it has no right flying over a government building.
    Anyway great topic Colin.

I grew up in Utah and Arizona, both states which didn't really have a horse in that race. The first time I'd ever been exposed to the idea that the Confederate Flag was a racist symbol was in 8th grade, and it was a teacher whom I _despised_ who informed my class that flying that flag isn't free of baggage. I suppose I should have come to that conclusion myself, but I had also grown up with the kind of "let's not shit on the South" history that Collin refers to in the video. "It wasn't about slavery, it was about money. It was about State's rights." That kind of stuff. So I didn't have much perspective on it. That said, when I was informed that maybe not everyone in the world was cool with that symbol, even though I was informed by someone who I disliked intensely, I took it to heart. Not that it matters that much, as I was unlikely to ever fly that flag, being from the West, but I knew that it wasn't really a cool thing to do.
Not sure why I threw all that information out there; I guess I just wanted to share my own perspective even though it's maybe not the most relevant thing in the world.
I tend to clash very hard with Collin on a lot of subjects, but that doesn't mean he's not an incredibly smart guy. It's almost certainly smarter than I am, and _definitely_ more knowledgeable (particularly about history). I'm glad that this is one of the subjects we can agree on.

You can get rid of the flag, but, you can't erase history. It's not something to be proud of. It was a dark time in US history.
If you don't learn history and the mistakes made in the past, history is destined to repeat itself.
Regardless of what happens in terms of the flag, people need to understand that history is history. Wanting to get rid of everything that has any relationship with slavery/civil war is asinine.
I don't care if they get rid of the flag or not, honestly.
I am from Kentucky, which was a neutral state that never seceded from the union. Even being from KY, you get insulted plenty just for having even the smallest amount of a southern accent.

I think Colin hit on a very big and important note when he mentioned that the SC shooter had an apartheid flag. While a lot of people like to think of unbridled racism and anti-government sentiment as being strong in the South or characteristic of the South, there are plenty of regions throughout the USA where white supremacy and anti-federalism are very strong. Washington state, certain areas in northern California, Colorado, and of course Montana, are all well-known bastions for white supremacy communes. Timothy McVeigh, the guy who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma, was tied into Aryan Nation members in the Oklahoma region.
I don't think it is any singular thing or that the shooter had any particular affinity for the historical nature of the South. I doubt he ever read the Articles of Secession or anything like that. It seem to me like he was a white supremacist scumbag and simply loved symbols that affirmed and conformed to his racist worldview.

First thing, I am a southerner - born and raised GA/AL, but lived/stationed in North and South Dakota from 2000-2005, currently reside in Louisiana. Second, I do not fly the stars and bars, I only fly the Stars and Stripes! The stars and bars can be flown anywhere, but should not be flown at any Government building. (Why would you do that?)
The North did not go to war to end slavery, they went to war to keep the Union together. Slaves were freed in the south with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and then freed everywhere else (North included) in 1865 with the 13th Amendment.
Why did R.E. Lee deserved to be hanged? He was fighting against oppression, not against freeing his slaves as Lincoln/U.S. Grant/Sherman/etc all had slaves during this time. George Washington fought against oppression, so Colin, do you think Mr. Washington deserved the gallows as well for being a traitor? (He was a traitor to the crown).
The shooter in SC needs to meet the gallows (screw the quick, merciful death), not here to defend that ass hat, as do all racists against any skin color (looking at you Mr. Sharpton). I am here, as a southerner (notice I don't capitalize the S in southerner as my nationality is American), because I despise the false "truth" always being spread about the region I was born and raised in.

The Rebel Flag has no place on government buildings. That said, the more important question is why the entire country is talking about this issue right now. There is literally no connection between this flag and the shooting in Charleston. This is shameful opportunism from groups exploiting a tragedy to advance their agenda. That's what this topic should have been about.

I understand the argument that the flag has connotations of slavery and the civil war, where the South were seen as traitors. But why do people immediately make the connection of racism?? The north had slavery as well. And racism has no boundaries of north or south, its everywhere. And its not restricted to a certain race either. There is an amazing number is instances where black individuals beat or kill whites for their race, but you never hear the popular media push these stories. Anyway, I think the flag should be taken down from government buildings, but in no way should restrict citizens from flying it. People can fly whatever flag they want, even if it were a nazi flag.

Even Lincoln believed that the white man and black man were not equals.
