This is one of my all-time favourite movements of any symphony and I decided to write a piano-solo arrangement of it so that I can play it myself. If anyone would like to have a go the sheet music can be found here: www.lukefaulkner.com/product-page/brahms-symphony-no-3-3
Mine too, Luke... so many other favorites... Beethoven 5th, The Mendelssohn "Italian" ... Schumann 3rd "Rhenish" ... the Mahler one with the HUGE Horn solo... I think 5.... and this movement just tops them all... (OHHHH.... Rachmaninoff... Second... that slow movement may be my No 2... after this...)
One of the most beautiful melodies written by Johannes Brahms. It has everything: beauty, longing, joy, compassion, - a return to childhood, but also a look at old age.
I share the exact same sentiment expressed by yourself that this is indeed one of Brahm's most achingly beautiful melodies in the lyrical third movement. Your piano arrangement is imho an exceptional feat, and your splendid interpretative performance of the piece has me but totally enraptured. I am trying to keep up with your impressive development not only as an artist with exceptional pianistic abilities but also with your most admirable compositional skills. But I do have a strong suspicion - or hunch, if you like - that I am missing quite a number of your performances. There is this to be said for it and that is that the gaps allow me to assess your marvelous maturation as an artist much more objectively. As long as I keep your own compositions covered, this brings me some comfort but I am not even sure if I'm doing this with any measure of success. As always, dear Luke, I wish you only the best and most satisfying of successes in your career. This particular performance reassures me that you are without a doubt solidly on track "Frei aber froh" seems to be a suitable motto for a splendid way forward. Good luck.
Gorgeous! And I agree, it's his most achingly beautiful melody AND it's Brahms at his best with all the inside voices that can be drawn out intentionally or not. I was listening and thought, "Oh, I wish this were available in print" and then read your description. Thank you so much!
Luke is really good. I love the more emotional pieces..I can play this 50 times..I listen to Luke almost everyday. If you read this, I hope you feel validated because impact sometimes is beyond overall numerical metrics.
Brahms has always been a favorite of mine. Luke, you did a wonderful job arranging and playing this haunting melody of the Poco Allegretto movement of the Third Symphony.
Helló dear Luke, i love it all. I was not a fan of Brahms as an artist but after your lovely performance I believe that I have changed my mind. Thank you Luke you are a talent. ❤
Luke 😃♥️!!! What a Memorable piece of Art, one of my best of Brahms Ever , extremely happy to see you My Dear Friend!! Really! You are AMAZING! All I have to say! Outstanding location BTW, so elegant & refined! Congrats the marvelous performance Luke 🌹
Oh la la, I almost missed the meeting! I didn't expect to see a new composition on a Thursday - silly me - but it's here! So...surpriiiiiise! And welcome to this new wonder! And...Hi Luke, how are you? I wish you a nice and serene 2022, by the way - because: not sure if you saw my sneaky comment on Halidon on Monday... This piece is absolutely exquisite, a sweet melancholy at times, with nice accelerations full of enthusiasm - my favorite parts, I think .... I find that several universes, or rather several scenes are mixed, or imagined, in this music. There is a passage of the melody, which repeats itself from time to time, reminds me of the refrain of a French song... What a treasure... - I'm talking about the melody of course, what else ?! haha! - 😃😃😃 No other words... I am absolutely a fan. Your choice of music - why this one and not another one today, you know - always comes at the right time, for me. Are you a seer ??? 😁 This spot is always so wonderful......❤️ I'm listenning in loop, simply. 💛 👏 ❤️ Oh and, do you plan to put this piece on spotify ?? Will be great !🥰😏 (Oh my god, I think I wrote more than Danie Burger today! 😎 Cheers ! Proud of it! He is a master - admired - in this matter! But it's less interesting when it comes from me ! hahaha ! 😁)
I agree with Luke this movement must be Brahms's most heart breaking melody, (there are plenty to choose from across his symphonies, piano and chamber works) and beautifully transcribed and played. Thanks
Beautiful! You're both a virtuoso pianist and an exceptional composer of music with emotional expression. You would have fit very nicely to the Romantic era 🎶
Thank you for uploading these superb performances your playing is so profoundly eloquent that it touches our inner feelings...It was amazing, too, your apparently playing almost single left handed! Waiting for more... Love, Teresa.
Everything about this is beautiful! My siblings and I enjoyed watching your performance, Mr. Faulkner :) My little brother was especially enthralled by the neat architecture in the video. Thank you for sharing this arrangement, I love it 💛
I was thinking the exact same thing, as your brother, actually. I wonder where he is that has such lovely interior design. It is quite a fitting setting for such an elegant piece.
Wonderful to see more music from you again! I've only really started to appreciate your talent after I started piano lessons, and I am struck by even more awe when watching you play now.

This is brilliant! Your talent in playing and composing are astounding! Thank you for this video! It is certainly a very special performance! God bless!
I love how the camera and mic quality give off cinematic vibes. I love the cathedral setting too. Your sense of attire is also impressive 👌 Everything about this video is great. Keep up the good work, sir.
Dude, I admire your technique, knowledge of music, ability to create such a wonderful arrangement! I strive to put in the hours you have to express myself like this. I would love to learn this, and probably will one day, and when I do, all do respect, I will do 2:40 so differently😂 That’s one of the reasons I think this piece is so brilliant, (as with all transcendental pieces) however many years on it inspires, technically, infinite forms of expression, all under the roof of this flow of order within the chaos Brahms, brilliantly, masterfully (if that’s a word) uncovered. You’ve inspired me, I’ll listen and share this for god knows how long. Thanks Luke!!
Thank you so much, Stephen! Hahaha - I'd love for you to take 2:40 in a completely different direction (part of the fun of music for me is seeing how other people approach things with their own personalities 😉) If you ever do, please drop me a link!
An amazing arrangement! Absolutely beautiful. You are a master on the piano. My dad also played the piano very well but I decided that guitar is the instrument to play. Today I regret.
Carlos Santana based his song “Love of My Life” on this stunning piece by Brahms. You played it exquisitely, Luke. Thank you. Now listen to Love of My Life by Carlos Santana.
Beautifully played as always Luke! Your version is absolutely wondeful. The video is also stunning. The room and colours give the whole video so much warmth.
Simplesmente, amo! Luke, sua arte já faz parte do meu dia a dia, quando a escuto viajo para um lugar único. Muito obrigada por compartilhar sua virtuosidade, que Deus te abençoe sempre!!🙏🙏🙏
I watched a film noir "Undercurrent - 1946" yesterday featuring the famous Katherine Hepburn. A couple of characters play this piece and its part of the story. I am more of a Chopin guy but this has been a gateway into Brahms for me.
He not only composes otherworldly pieces, but also makes some of the most epic arrangements you can experience in life

it is only when you analyze and play Brahm's works that you begin to realize what a genius, innovator, and deeply feeling man he truly was!
This is still SOOOO good, I must have watched this a hundred times already. Such a great arrangement.
