What amazes me is Yamaha's consistency in performance. I bought an FG800 yesterday. My son owns an FG830. And his son owns the F335 starter guitar I gifted him to learn to play. He reads music, is in his high school orchestra, playing the Bassoon. "Beginners Guitar the FG800" poppycock I say. Even without my setting it up sounded better than siome of the HeavyHitters I've owned over the 70 years I've been playing.
Omgg when you started playing let her go i was shocked. I can play the exact same thing too and it was my first fingerstyle song tht i learnt. Anyway thanks for the review!! Hoping to get this guitar soon
I've been playing since '72 (hey, never said I was all that good, but had a coffee-house following, back in the day.) After a long hiatus, I decided to go looking for another acoustic; hadn't had anything I'd fallen in love with, in a long time, though guitars had come and gone. This mid-size Dreadnaught, with its "much bigger" sound, I fell in love with. Got the "vintage" finish, which really does look like an older guitar; beautiful wood in either finish, though. I'd honestly compare it favorably to the Martin D28. Even though Yamaha calls it an "entry level" guitar, even folks with much more time in the saddle will love this one.
I had to come and check out to see if Yamaha FGs were still good. For many years I have been recommending them to players that are looking to step up in tone. I'm glad to see they still sound great. They aren't going to win 1st place in a beauty contest, but they have what really matters, excellent tone, very playable, well constructed guitars. You can't find a better guitar for the price, they sound better than most guitars at two or three times the price. Good luck and have many enjoyable years with your new guitar.
I have one of these in sunburst. Great value. They can't be beaten. I wish they made affordable guitars of this quality way back when I first started playing.

wow I was playing a bit of ukulele than bought a Yamaha C40 classical - excellent beginner guitar as well - now I'm learning on this acoustic. As an adult begineer trying to learn music Yamaha offers the best bang for your buck. I'm not rich :(
i have on 2 occassions played upside down( im lefty ) 20+ acoustics at 2 different music stores - both cases - i preferred yamaha over epiphone , martin , taylor and seagull. Only the takamine and guild did i like as much or more than the “ cheap” yamaha
I was going to get a really cheap guitar to learn on but after watching this im going to wait a little longer and get this guitar, i think it looks and sounds great 👍🏆.
Yup, Yamaha's most recent FG line (the 800 series) is truly the best bang for your buck out there as far as the budget-level acoustic guitar market goes. Already pre-ordered my left-handed FG-820 variant off Sweetwater about two weeks ago and should be in my beginner hands sometime come early/mid-June. I was actually torn between that one and the equally-competent Alvarez AD-60L in terms of my preferred price range, but Yamaha's a bit more widely available where I am by comparison and they have a better support network to boot as well. By the way, that FG-800M sounds beautiful in your hands! "Cheap" guitar MY ASS (lol), put a blindfold on and you'd think it was in the $1,000-price range...except it's not. >;-)
hay same here! I am about to preorder a left-handed FG 820 but mine will arrive 3 months from now. its a struggle getting an acoustic guitar for a left-handed person especially if you live in places where people rarely even get acoustic guitars. good luck with yours!
@@gailan8393 Yup, and it's even worse if you happen to play bass (my primary instrument). It's like the big name brands out there would rather have nothing to do with the southpaw consumer base instead of actually making a concerted effort to keep 'em in the damn loop! Oh well, one can always flip a guitar around and make do in the meantime:::sigh:::by the way, congrats on going for the FG-820L. You're not really gonna find many decent left-handed acoustic guitars under $500 that can potentially top this one. Seagull S6 JUST might, but it's right up against the cut-off mark price-wise. Alvarez AD-60L was actually my initial choice (nut/saddle combo made of real bone yet priced roughly the same as the FG-820L), but like I said before the Alvarez brand is not as widely available in my area compared to Yamaha so I ended up passing on it in favor of the latter. Be sure to get a hardshell case for yours (preferably the one Yamaha has that's custom-fitted for the FG-800 series) before it finally arrives! Only the high-end "Red Label" FG models automatically come with either a case or gig bag depending on which country they were made in. ;-)

Great playing! Now I have a problem - I don't know if this would be a better choice for a first guitar than Ibanez aw54opn. Which one would you recommend?
AW54 has a solid mahogany top so it's gonna give you a different tone than your typical spruce. Like Alberto said: TRY 'EM BOTH and see which one speaks to you the most:::wink:::wink::: ;-)
Hi! Is there are difference in the sound between glossy and matte versions of this model? I've heard different thing: that glossy ones mutes the sound, that you shoud always get matte ones because their finish is thinner which is better for the sound, and then, I've heard that it's not true. I also heard that matte finished guitars sound more warm and mellower, and glossy ones sound clearer and brighter...How is it really?
I've owned many many guitars, and I think the finish has much less to do with tone than wood types, bracing patterns, strings, etc... Finish is probably on the bottom of my list in regards to tone. If you're new to guitar (no offense if you're not) focus on finding something that feels good in your hands and sounds good to your ear. Nothing else matters regardless what the guitar 'experts tell you'.
Well , matte finish allows the top to vibrate more thus produce better sound. But the difference is very small. I prefer matte because glossy finish looks cheap on these cheap guitar.
Hi that song that you played what is that song I love that song but always forget the name of it and really would like to play it on my fg800m acoustic guitar pls help me
Great video! At this moment I'm playing classical guitar, but I want to switch to acoustic one, however I'm worried that I will disturb other people with my guitar practice. I find classical guitar pretty quiet and I'm not sure how much louder acoustic guitar is compared to classical. I heard about feedback busters, but I don't know if they would solve my issue. Are there any other methods to make acoustic guitar quieter? To what degree do you think that feedback buster would solve my issue? Also, would you please tell me, how much louder acoustic guitar, like Yamaha FG800 is compared to classical? Thank you in advance for your answer!
Mateusz Miśkiewicz Thank you! I have never tried a "feedback buster" but as far as I know they are used to reduce feedback when you play the electro-acoustic guitar live and not so much to make it sound lower volume. That being said, the acoustic guitar has metal strings and the body is larger, so it projects more energy that translates into volume ... Either way, the volume will depend on your playing technique. It is not the same to use a fingerpicking style or to strum chords strongly with a heavy pick or delicately with a very thin pick ... I would say that the volume is about 20% 30% louder but it will depend once again on the guitar and your technique. I hope I could help you!
That has more to do with technique and string types (IE: Martin Silk & steel are known to prevent string noise). But, some string noise is to be expected on acoustic guitars.
yeah , thats normal on acoustics and its part of playing , imo it sounds beautiful , and you can hear it in alot of songs where acoustic guitars are playing.
I think it' important to point out that all guitars don't necessarily play well straight out of the box. Yamaha guitars are notorious for having high actions which can be a killer for new players. Not every dealer sets up their guitars so it might be worth budgeting £30-£40 for a luthier if you don't know how to set yours up.

@@AlbertoMartinezDelRio Thanks for answering. I'm thinking about getting my first guitar and that it's going to be the FG800M. Do you know which string gauges that is recommended to get for this guitar? (I'm thinking about getting D'Addario EXP16 which is light .012-.053)
Kiirozu I Think that its a good choice.
