  • Headaches. Coughing. Red eyes. Breathing problems. Air purifiers running around the clock, and the smell that just won’t go away.
For 53 days and counting, these things have been reality for hundreds Alabama residents living near an underground fire at a landfill just north of Birmingham, with no end in sight.
Some living closest to the fire have moved away from the blaze. AL.com reporter Dennis Pillion and videographer Amanda Khorramabadi talked to some of the residents close to the landfill fire who decided to stay.

We live 100 yards away, all of us have experienced health affects and have been forced to move out. This has turned our dream nature spot into a nightmare. 😢

It's because you keep voting for republicans who don't care about the environment or you. It's all about making money. You get what you vote for.

I have sympathy for the 12 percent or so residents of St. Clair county that don't vote straight-ticket Republican at all levels of government. Everyone else there: Enjoy your "freedom," suckers!

SHAME on the landfill owners! GOD made Alabama beautiful for us to enjoy, not for big companies and reckless landfill owners to RUIN with toxic waste dumps and landfill fires!

Republicans gutted the EPA for money. Stop voting for them.

@Jordan Tyler how'bout you go on over to N. Bham and get you a real good whiff. then come back with your patronizing "uuuuuuuh," and tell me if rotting leaves and dead racoons is what you smell. go rent a home of one of the local residents and inhale all the "you know better" you want.

It apparently is only supposed to contain vegetation but apparently it has tires and other non organic garbage in there. So that's probably whats causing the bad smoke

Alabama’s governor sucks. Small government means no regulation. Wish the residents would change who they vote for.
