I was VERY angry last night. This morning I’ve gone back and rewatched the second half. I highly recommend for anyone who is interested in why wins or losses happen to do that. It’s kinda crazy how much easier it is to analyze once you aren’t watching it happen for the first time.
After watching , it’s actually super clear how the Celtics lost this game: they missed WAY too many good looks from 3, especially in the 3rd qtr when, after an initial hot start, the thunder could barely score from like the 8 minute to the 3 minute mark. We had SO many opportunities when the lead was arlund 9-10 to push the lead to 20. White missed a couple, Sam missed a couple GREAT looks( and then another one right after those two that maybe wasnt a shot he should have taken so early, but another clean look he makes all of the time). KP missed a few great looks, AND he got a great steal but forced up an ugly 3 after he wasn’t patient enough. Tatum missed a great look and also had a couple more misses that he didn’t need to take, especially since his shot was off last night. The thunder were ICE cold in the 3rd even though it looks like it was only us. But they were BAd. They Werner getting any good looks. SGA wasnt getting clean looks or even taking barely any shots. I would also add that a huge difference between the first and the second half were the foul calls. Idk why. But after calling almost everything in the first half, the refs all of a sudden stopped blowing the whistle. I think it was most notable by comparing a few Jaylen interior shots in the first half to the first play of the 3rd. But I think the refs didn’t want to get SGA in foul trouble. They also continued to not blow the whistle for the thunder and then started to call soft offensive fouls on us, I believe 3 of them, which was also not helpful.
Despite the fouls, it still came down to the 3s. We played great defense for a LOT of possessions. And the thunder weren’t hunting great looks. But we just couldn’t capitalize! I even left out that we had two 3s back to back that rimmed in and out in the 3rd. Man we just couldn’t buy one. Al missed a WIDE open look early in the 4th. They actually let him shoot it. Hes really sort of off right now even tho 2/5 looks ok. He’s like 20 percent over the last week or so.
I know I’m just going on and on, but after looking back it’s not one of those games where we are just playing a team who is just so disciplined and executes SO well or something. I’d say thats actually one of the thunders worst qualities as of now, as elite as they are. Once the Celtics poise slowly eroded, the thunder finally caught a rhythm as a team a couple times in the second half, and that was the difference. But honestly it was just the Celtics horrid shot making that cost them this game despite a few other minor details.
Tatum had a terrible stretch late in the 3rd wirh Brown out, and Brown had a terrible stretch early in the 4th with Tatum out. But we STIlL win this game pretty easily if we just make some of our open 3s man. Legit just such poor shooting. And it actually started in the first half. We just were finding so mant ways to score inside, especially JB, and the thunder were really just being held in check by us enough on offense that it didn’t really matter as much. But if we never go cold, not only do we end up winning late but I think we would have been up by 20+ at half time.
Ugh! And last thing I’ll say, when we were up 13 late in the first half, we had a chance to REALLY step on it. I love Jrue in a Marco way, but in a micro way the man drives me SO crazy. He has a LOT of low IQ offensive plays at times. So Tatum finds him wide open in the middle of the paint wirh a jump pass, and he has Jaylen cutting in for a layup or dunk, wide open. Jaylen isn’t pointing up for the lob, instead he is holding his hands up waiting for a quick chest pass or bounce pass. Jrue for some stupid idiotic reason tries to throw a soft alley oop. It leads to a contested missed airball layup from JB, instead of what would have been an easy dunk or layup. That leads to the Thunder going down, missing a 3, but someone grabs the rebound right out of Tatums hands and finds SGA. He is wide open from the left wing and shoots and makes his first 3 of the game, not only cutting it to 10 but sort of shaking his head and turning his palms up to the sky like “thank you God! Finally!l because he had missed mant wide open 3s up until that point.
Come ON GUYS. I’ve seen this happen SO mant times this year during some close wins and losses. We get a lead and start playing WAY too casually. Not taking things seriously. Not locking in. Sort of trying to have fun instead of compete, because we are up…what? 13?!? Or 12? Come ON!!! Oh I remember! It was the end of the 3rd qtr in the Cavs loss! We got up 12 and instead of staying locked in, we had a few WIDE open 3s and fast breaks and such, and we botched all of them, wuen we had a chance to step on their necks!!!
Overall, thars my final point. We are as good as we hope we are. This team can still win it all again. But they need to get that killer mentality back. Who cares if we finally went ice cold. Thars OK. We can shoot so well it’s gonna be fine. But we HAVE to stop being casual and lasee fair( idk how to spell it) when we get leads. Just look at the way they locked in once the thunder went up 9. I know we still sucked and couldn’t really score, but honestly even then we forced SO many missed shots and on offense by then our confidence was gone. But at least you cpile feel them lock on for a couple minutes and trt to cut it to 6 or so. And weve seen that vs the Pacers twice and vs the sixers recently. It’s like this team has the ability to just get fucking pissed off and LOCK IN. Play angry and focused. But for some reason, they don’t want to play that way or something? Idk. And heck! Would you look at what happened in the recent pacers and sixers games? We locked in and come allll the way back! But as soon as we relax thinking we have a chance again, we instantly get run off the floor.
Idk what it is. And they’re going to eventually figure it out. But it’s going to be some sort of Emotional intelligence ttpe of growth that is needed from this team z. Idk man. Maybe it’s something Joe is doing. But they need to learn that it’s awesome to be able to lock in wuen you are down 13, but it’s like they are intentionally trying to “not worry about it, just have fun” most of the time.

@@zay914 hold on let me go get the data one second…ok I’m back. The thunder scored 2 points from the 8:40 mark in the 3rd to about the 4 minute mark. Overall even with their flurry in the last couple minutes they still only scored 21 points in the qtr. They went like 5 minutes scoring 1 basket. The lead was consistently about 9-10 points during most of the 3rd until the Celtics subs came in with around 4 and change left. I’m not trying to take anything away from the Thunder, I actually like the team, but if the Celtics make their average % from 3 this isn’t a close game. At all. In the 4th things got really tight and the crowd got into it and the Celtics weren’t even getting good looks most of the time, but in the 3rd during the middle portion of the qtr the thunder were still very lethargic and were leaving the door WIDE open for the Cs to make a huge lead. But hey this is how bball works! It’s not about analyzing after the fact like I’m doing, it’s about making shots in the moment. And the thunder eventually got it going a bit while the Celtics weren’t able to after their hot start. Game thunder

I just rewatched the game. I sort of agree. But I’d actually say in the 3rd qtr almost every one of those 3s was a good look that we usually make 40 percent of. We were just ice cold. Hauser missed 3 pretty wide open 3s in a row while the lead was 9-10. The thunder honestly were pretty ice cold for the middle 6 minutes of the 3rd and if the Celtics make like 3 of the 10 3s they missed during that period it’s likely a Celtics win. They just got SO ice cold and FINALLY the thunder made a couple shots late in the 3rd and managed to build some momentum. But even still, the thunder were still not scoring great most of the 4th, it was really on a couple quick flurries that won the game. Almost every team normally has those little 5 point runs back and forth, the thunder weren’t even close to on fire. But the Celtics were just So ice cold and by that point you could tell mentally they were really messed up. I was acrisllt really impressed wirh the Celtics D and surprised that OKC doesnt have the best shot selection. I kept thinking how lucky we were that you guys weren’t scoring as we kept missing 3 after 3. And then of course a few offensive foul calls on us were tough, as well as the refs deciding to not call the same fouls in the first half that they were calling on both ends. I don’t think the thunder got any cheap FT calls or anything, but I do think the refs just swallows their whistle after doing the exact opposite in the first. And it was odd as well that they weren’t calling anything, but then randomly at the worst time they call some soft offensive foul. Idkkkk.
But props to thunder. I’m a HuGE nba fan not just bosron. Been rooting for you guys like crazy vs the wolves and the Knicks lately. SGA is…man. I def been going around talking to my friends about how they need to see this man. He is already on his way to being once in a million ttpe player. And the coolest thing is that hes one of the guys who is that good because of something in his heart and his mind.
BUT yeah I definitely was not super impressed with your TEaM. More so SGA and your coach. And the team is good dont get me wrong! But in our game vs the Magic for example, we just couldn’t get a single open shot late in the game cuz of their defense. Wirh you guys obviously you shut us down, but it really just felt like we missed SO many wide open 3s through 3 qtrs. Oh you know what I was really impressed with? Your extra effort ttpe plays. A couple of them swung the game. One was when you stole an offensive rebound out of Tatums hands, and the other was wheb you stole a ball out of Whites hands after Jrue had saved it to him. Both of those plays were really mind blowing.
And again I don’t want to act as if I’m not giving you guys credit for the defense! It was super locked in in the 4th qtr! But I guess I’m just saying I didn’t feel like you have all of these guys that are impossible to drive by. It’s more so that your entire D was giving really good effort. But I think we were able to create good looks almost the whole game, we just couldn’t buy shit!
Lemme know what you thought! And I’m DeF not trying to take credit away! It’s a make or miss league! And SGa was also obviously the best player in the game!
