I had a wonderful art teacher in high school. He was a bit weird but I learned so much from him. He enter two of my junior year pieces in the state exhibitions. One took 2nd prize and the the other took 1st. Because I was in school and they were entered in a state contest, they became property of the state when I won. I did get the trophy and the ribbons. The one thing I still use to this day, I graduated before the normal age in 1967, is he told me when I was not sure of the color or balance of a painting, drawing or whatever I was working on to turn it upside down. Stand back and look at it and you will see immediately what is not correct or out of sorts. It also gives you proportions on objects. That is such a priceless wonderful tool that I have used for 55 years. Just a suggestion because I know you are the teacher but it is a tool that always worked for me. I had that teacher for 3 years and every time I paint a painting or draw a picture I turn it upside down to check it and hear him telling me, "you can now see your mistakes or victories." I could not afford to go to art school so I have always been more than appreciative of those who took the time to teach me some of what they knew. You are now one of those respected people. Thank you again.

When you are putting on the glaze, it gives a more brilliant colour to the painting. One cannot get that when painting with acrylics. So I am seriously thinking of going into oils soon. Thank you for posting. Enjoyed watching you paint. Thank you again.

I started in oils, way back when (before acrylics was ever even thought of!) - then in college tried acrylics when they first came out - then to watercolor, which was my favorite for years and years - then to acrylics for several years now - but I too am going to start doing some oils again. There are just some things you can do with oils that no other mediums accommodate! Happy painting!

Never saw this technique before this painting. Love it and will try it. I love all mediums. This is a new one for the oils. I am mostly self taught but even with that you can still tell what it is when I finish. Must not be too bad because I can never keep my pieces in the house. People always walk off with them. Thank you for sharing. I truly appreciate it.

So few instructors say a lot about how to go about glazing & seem to be reluctant to really explain the what & why of it, never mind the how. Thank you for the explanation about wiping out and why and how multiple layers could or should, depending on how you feel about, be done in multiple colors. I used your glazing technique to go over a painting with a boat that was in a fog, to my great advantage....it worked so well! I wish my memory was as good as yours, I tend to need reference material, to my great consternation. I appreciate your instruction so much, your explanations are wonderful to follow. I have learned to be more realistic by being less organized, what a wonder! By being less super realistic I have become a much better painter.

Great video as always, Stuart! Re: warping, my college art instructor suggested we first coat the back of the board with gesso. That way, it greatly reduced the chance of warping. It offsets the curl that would normally occur without doing this first. Just a suggestion. It does work. I've done it many times. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills. I have never posted a comment on any of the painting video I have viewed, until today. I am a big fan of Bob Ross wet on wet technique and started to paint because of him. Bob Ross style made painting easy and it brought out the artist that was inside of me. I have painted many pictures of landscape and some seascape scenes that was in my head and I am very pleased with the finished paintings I have done. Your style of painting takes me to another level. I am so impressed at what you do and how easy it looks. I have just washed your oil painting gazing made easy, (my second viewed video of your work) and it does look easy. This week I will take a look at some of my older painting and see if I can apply your technique to get that wow effect that I get when I see your painting. I want to thank you for posting your videos and look forward to watching more of your videos to improve on what I am doing.
