in order to preserve the ambiguity of "katelaben," I would suggest "grasped."
This is so messed up because if ἦν is the imperfect of 1st person singular εἰμί which is "I am" then it definitely means "I was" not "he was" . I have looked and looked at this and there is no other way to read it. It is mis-translated in all bibles.

ἧν means "he was, she was, it was". It does not mean "I was"
«Ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν», «ἐν» doesn't mean in that case «in» but «through». Ofcourse there was life in him, John already called him God !!! The «ἐν» therefore does not have a local, but an aetiological meaning. => Through him was the life.
The «ἐν» means «through» in many cases like, «Ἔν αὐτῷ γὰρ ζῶμεν» Acts 17: 18 =>Through/because of him (the God) we live.
«ἐν αὐτῷ ἐκτίσθη τὰ πάντα» Colossians1 :16 => Through him everything was created.
Logos = Jesus. God = trinity. In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with the trinity, and Jesus was the trinity. Jesus was in the beginning with the trinity. All things came into being through Jesus, and apart from Jesus nothing came into being that has come into being.
And it means if you don't speak the words they won't become real or true
