Pedersoli is as close as it gets in the mass market. For what I'm doing they are fine, but a lot of people have modified and 'fixed' theirs over the years by refinishing and even applying new hardware.
G that looked like fun.Well done chaps. FWIW I would suggest a more aggressive charge of 120 grains of 1F and, for the number of rounds used, larger balls. The period size was to allow the full 60 rounds carried to be loaded in spite of fouling. With modern cleaner powders you can get away with a .72 or .73 ball in the Bess. Post Napoleonic war George Lovell reduced artillery and sappers carbines down from .753 to.733 as they would be unlikely to have to fire 60 rounds so could benefit from a closer fit to the standard service issue ball cartridge.
My hat is off to each of you gentlemen. That looked like a lot of fun and fairly tough physically, given the weight of the firearms and the rigor of loading - especially when compared to modern firearms. I am pacing like a tiger waiting for my kits to show up. My wife keeps telling me that patience is a virtue. Darn virtues. Thank you for the great content.
That is awesome! Looks like an absolute blast! Great job both of you guys as far as I'm concerned, both getting 3 or 4 shots off around 2 minutes is a job well done!
Barry has the slowest velocity I have ever seen out of a muzzle loader. the 22 second flight time over 50 yards on his second shot was amazing. LOL Probably the reason he shot low.
Looks like lots of fun! Still need to build a smoothbore myself, maybe I can come shoot with you guys some time. Great video Ethan, glad yall had a blast.
Yeah, a fowling piece or military musket is pretty high on my agenda too, almost certainly to be a charleville if I go musket, but damn if that Bess isn't a beaut
Rocking the good old Charleville. I'm jealous. Mine is getting worked on right now. Otherwise I'd be running with it. Looks like I'm going to be using the pederesoli brown bess
Barry, your ball should have been a .715 or .720 if it is .75 cal. So basically like the undercaliber ball for the Ferguson which is a .65 and shot a .615 carbine ball. Of course, that was shot with a tallow/beeswax dip and you shoot with paper patching. Nathan shot a .66 out of a .69. I just think the Brown Bess Ball Size was way too small in order to compare accuracies. It was fun to watch that Barry kept his frizzen open while trying to fire. That will never go off.... And these two guns are probably a few of the only Pedersoli guns which actually have a correct flint breech and therefore work pretty well. I am still assuming that the springs are pretty terribly unbalanced in the lock which shortens the flint life???? How many shots do you get from a flint with these?
I hate to think of how many soldiers rated there rifels and they went off!!!! Shooting the ram rod out because of hot embers after furling in a battle wow
I love these videos! My son was home from school (linemen school🙂 ) this week and I would have loved to do this with him. I’ll do it in May when he hets home and will send you the video. Maybe you can start a subscriber series…. Of course we’ll have nicer weather in May and real sights! Lol!
A great showing guys, it looked fun. Of course, if you and Barry were really cool, you'd have done it on snowshoes while wearing a full kit like Rob did... ;-) Still, kudos for doing it at all and getting some hits.
That looked like a lot of fun, except the snow part. I think I'm allergic to snow. LOL Something that's helped me tame my fowler is a laser boresight and watching a ridiculous amount of yt videos on aiming and fitting shotguns and shooting skeet. IMHO you have to aim these sight less muskets like shotguns. I replaced my flint with a piece of wood and dry fired with the laser boresight to look for my mistakes. Made a big difference. I also think your main charge is too light. I'd bump it up to 110 grains of 1.5f or 2f. YMMV Anyway, thank you for doing these videos.
your paper cartriges look Much Like Mine! keeping safety in mind I developed a paper load with the pan powder of chioce last or first? in the tail as a pimer charge pocket. I Must "Believe" our ancestors did much the same! sooner? Watching you and your friends Gets me to my Next Shoot! Thanks!
You're doing it wrong aren't you if you don't use the supplied ram rod with the gun and return it before each shot. I mean you can argue Soldiers might have in the stress of battle forgotten to prime first and resorted to primming one way or another after the fact and modern shooters adhere to safety, but you can't argue against the ram rod.
That's good shooting for a military musket and paper cartridges. I had to make a little sheet metal rear sight for my brown bess to even hit paper consistently!
@@ILoveMuzzleloading I’ve yet to go out and figure out a ratio yet. I have #5 shot and plan on starting out with a square load of 75 grains using flax wadding. You might beat me to it! If so, I’d like to see what you come up with :)
Nice shooting... Never let em see ya sweat though... 1:58 as per your timer, we heard that. Lol whispering doesnt help with a lapel mic lol. Well ya know what that showed me with your second run? You think too much. Knock it off lol your group was better the second time.
After learning on the bess, the charleville felt like a huge upgrade 😂
Oh man. I missed out on a postal shoot. I have my Charleville up and running. She sure can bust up my cheek bone.
I have a Pedersoli 1777, great fun. Way more fun than cartridge guns. I blame all my misses on the smooth bore.
Love the channel. Hate to sound like the safety police, but please consider moving the priming horn further away while shooting prone.
Thanks for keeping an eye out!
That looked fun
You gotta try it!
I've been wondering how these two would stack up. In your opinion, is Pedersoli a pretty accurate representation of the gun?
Pedersoli is as close as it gets in the mass market. For what I'm doing they are fine, but a lot of people have modified and 'fixed' theirs over the years by refinishing and even applying new hardware.
Probably going to get scoffed at, but before I got my fowler, I filed the bayonet lug on my Bess into a makeshift front sight. Made a big difference.
Good idea!
Many people in the frontier did the same. I've seen historic examples with lugs filed.
Well done guys, thank you for participating in the challenge!
Thank you for helping us by helping organizing!
I really like what offer on your videos.
I appreciate your time and effort you put in for us. Please keep doing what you do.
Thanks alot.
Thank you kindly!

Per the British drill manuals the brown bess bayonet lug was actually referred to as “the sight”
Hey thanks!!

Great job guys, I just wish I could get up from those positions as gracefully as you both do!
Thanks Keith!! We'll have to get a class for you to try.
@@ILoveMuzzleloading I can get into and out of those positions, awkwardly of course!
I am looking at getting a Rev military musket. Cant decide between the brown bess or the charleville. The charleville looks more military ish.

Fantastic work! Love to see those military muskets be pushed to their capabilities.
It's a lot of fun!!
Can't wait till the come out with chewable/ edible flavored paper ...Mmm good. Shooting time means snack time
Looks like fun. We used to do stuff similar with buddies when I was younger.
Hey Barry were you the cameraman for Steve walls?? If you weren't you sure do look like the cameraman that Steve walser's using just like him
I hate to think of how many soldiers rated there rifels and they went off!!!! Shooting the ram rod out because of hot embers after furling in a battle wow
I didn't know you were a fellow Ohioan, Good runs.
Thanks!
Really cool Ethan, very fun to watch. Have to give it a shot next year!
Please do!

I can only bow down to Rob.
Rob clears the wild timber for us mere peons!
Thanks guys! Encouraging to get outside this time of year.
Thanks!!

Thanks Dave! Good thoughts on the primer pocket!
Think about how stressful it would be if a whole lot of people were shooting back at you!!! Great video!!!
Getting shot at sucks, and its gotten even worse as weapons have advanced
This looks like a good time. I need to give it a try.
I’d love to see it
Looks like fun! :) POW POW!!
You gotta try it Ron!!

Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother and everyone else
How do you find out about this shoot, and how do you participate? Another great video!!
It’s a free to shoot online match! More info here: www.riflechair.com/cabin-fever-challenge
That was awesome. I may have to take my pedersoli brown bess to the range and try this.
Please do!
I wanted to do this, and then my range got buried under 3 feet of snow, you can't even walk to get there let alone set out a target.
Hope it clears up soon!
Hope it clears up soon!
what hole!!!!
Cool man cool

Thanks John.
What brand is your charleville?
This is a Pedersoli
Thank you!

I love it! Nice guns. I need one🤠
You’d make a fine member of the Armée révolutionnaire française! Looking forward to taking out my Charleville this spring for turkey season.
Thank you! I hope to be up to snuff!
What kind of load do you use for turkey? I’m hoping to do the same
