The Return of Thompson/Center with Gregg Ritz | July 2024 | I Love Muzzleloading Podcast
Today we’re talking with Gregg Ritz about the long awaited return of Thompson/Center. Many, myself included thought the news of Thompson/Center’s divestment spelled out the end of the company and an American Legacy, but thatnks to Gregg and his team, that isn’t the case.
I’m asking Gregg some of the questions you want answered. We’re talking about timelines, production schedules, what will be made first, and when we can expect to see a Thompson/Center Hawken back in the hands of muzzleloading enthusiasts.

    Dear god, why would I want to use an inline which were invented to cheat the system? Precision copper and plastic belted bullets, stainless steel barrel, and with expensive scopes? I can just use a bolt action rifle and get the same result. If I want a big bore I can just use a break open 20ga or 12ga shotgun with slugs which is not much different than an inline. The whole point of muzzleloading seasons it to allow traditional hunting styles to be kept alive. The internet now provides a wealth of information to help new shooters so there's much much less trial and error involved.

    Maybe im not being a purist but traditions was on to something with the Elkhorn removable breech plug. If TC coud incorporate something like that into their traditional guns that would be great. I think that more people would get into muzzleloading with a easier to clean traditional gun

    It would be great to see TC offer a Hawken kit better than what's currently out there at a value level. I want to build a muzzleloader with my son's but a kibler is too much for a first build with them

    • @minigpracing3068
      @minigpracing3068 День назад

      Go with a Traditions kit, they are not bad, just that some areas could be better. I have the Traditions Hawken kit built, the plastic sights are the worst part and something that can be fixed with buying good sights. The TC will be priced at the upper range (again), short of a Kibler or Hawken Shop, but still a lot of money for a first kit. I still have the CVA Kentucky Long Rifle kit that I built as a teen with my dad, that was a long time ago. It's a good solid shooter, as is my "Hawken" that I built 2 years ago. Summary is, don't let the time slip away, build something with your kids, and let them do the work so they are invested.

      @@minigpracing3068 i had considered the traditions kit... But heard bad reviews on the lock and some of the cheap components (like the sights) have me thinking something like an investarms might be better. I'm also hoping that since TC will have greater manufacturing capability than kibler they will be able to make a cheaper kit (500-750) and be better quality than the investarms or traditions we currently have available. Plus i wouldn't mind being able to actually support an American made company! I do still have some time available though. My youngest is less than a year and the other is under 5 thankfully but I'm always trying to think about their futures.

    T/C should look more into stainless and nitride barrels moving forward. One thing that dissappointed me with my T/C Triumph with weathershield, is that after one of my 1st hunts with it in a kind of mist, the bore started surface rusting. Gun shoots well, still like it, but that did bug me. I know Glen from Bass and Bucks, is actually where I bought my Triumph. Bass and Bucks is a nice shop, with a 750 yard range.

    One of the worst things for hunting, and the future of hunting, is greedy farmers destroying all the timber. Keep seeing this more and more. Now rich out of staters are buying up all the land, and selling in smaller tracts, or just sitting on the land for later reasons. You can not outbid a lot of these people. It's hard to find land that wont be ruined habitat wise, by the neiboring timber properties being ripped out. 20-30 years from now ypou will be lucky to find land worth buying, that isnt stripped of all the good trees loogged out, or with ideal habitat to support wildlife needs. Will lead to peaple over crowding dangerously on state lands, or just giving up on hunting.

      I knew a man who bought a nice piece of land. The seller tried to have it logged while the paperwork was still in progress. My friend caught the loggers and ran them off at rifle point, then went to visit the seller. No more trouble after that. Later an adjoining farm sold, and some rich person built a McMansion close to my friend's land. Ruined that part for hunting. Also a timber company sprayed their land with herbicide. The spray drifted onto my friends land and killed lots of oaks. The company denied doing it. Maybe they did it on purpose, because they had to give him right of way to his land.

      Some of us barely have time to hunt, inlines are helpful for us. Technically most people are not "hunting" anymore, they are sitting and waiting🤗. Unless you are out west with gobs of land with no boundary lines forever, not many truely get to hunt. Some of us are lucky to find 10 acres to hunt on, and state ground can be over crowded/dangerous. Usually less guys are out for m-load.

    I get it - the patch is esentially like a 'sabot' engaging the lands & grooves of the rifling - not the lead ball itself. Also noticed when he measured the ramrod inside the barrel it went BEYOND the touchhole, so the primer flame thru the touch hole ignites the main powder charge between the patch & the powder AT THE TOP of the powder chartge and NOT AT THE BOTTOM as in self contained metalic cartriges primed from behind (or at the bottom) of their powder. Needle guns also did this in the first primitive bolt actions of the 1870s. Very interesting. Been muzzle loading 50 years and thought I 'Knew it all" HA! Nice wake up call. Very well done this instructionasl video. Thanks - I love muzzleloading!
