Fire Lighting Challenge: Impossible?

- In this video, we take a trip to Coal Creek for a good, old-fashioned "Mountain Man" competition. Competitors participate in the course of fire using their flintlocks and tomahawks, but intermixed are mountain man survival challenges like setting a trap, starting a fire, and casting ball.
Competitors are timed and their hits are scored to decide who goes home a winner.
In all seriousness, this is a friendly competition and an in-depth look at a classic muzzleloading match, lovingly called "The Mountain Man". Unlike a regular "stand and shoot" competition, mountain man competitions test your accuracy, endurance, and strength all at once.
Fire kits will be soaked, fingers will be pinched, beards will be singed.

Tell Paul that he is my hero.
Paul is an American hero
@@ILoveMuzzleloadingtruly
Sign him up for the show ALONE immediately! He's a beast! Looks like he's part of last of the Mohicans!
Wow..... that guy Paul is the real deal... That's the kind of guy I'd want to be with in the woods. He's truly skilled and when things gets tough, he keeps going. And everyone else also seems very skilled and friendly. Thanks for this video and congrats for the way you've presented the whole thing.
That is so awesome! The guy smoothbore, holy cow! What a survivor that guy is! Thank you for sharing Ethan,Very cool!!
He seems like a true native mountain man. That guy was truly impressive.
This one brings back many memories. Good stuff, Ethan! That "no mold slug" trick is one I've never witnessed.
I don't know that any of us there had seen it to be honest 🤣
So cool! Thank you Ethan for bringing us along. I wish we had events like this and like minded people near my home. 🎉
So much for worrying about the sprue on a roundball anymore after watching the hand forged roundball ring a gong at 50 yards!
Yep, unless I'm aiming for an X stack, that sprue isn't a big concern anymore LOL
I have watched and rewatched Paul's run over and over you need to get him on your show here he seems like a really awesome guy
That is hands down my favorite video I've seen all year! How fun and wow what skills these folks have!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks like a great time! Thanks for the video.
Paul is the man!!! I'm glad I recently purchased a Kibler colonial smoothbore.
Hey, how long did it take you to receive yours?
@@SadenIsWatchin It was one of their ready to ship kits. It took approximately one month to receive the rifle.
@@usnchief1339 Ah geeze, then it's gonna take me awhile to get mine, I decided I wanted something a bit specific that their ready to ship options didn't have. Well, I hope your Colonial came together decently!
What a great get together with fun, competition, laughter while burning some black powder. Thank you for sharing!
Met up with Paul at Old Mines rendezvous. It was a pleasure meeting him and his gentle manner. I'd like to know where this shoot took place, and the dates.
Now that's a kind of woods walk I want to do.
This must have been an amazing day. Paul is a real life mountain man, that can do attitude is hilarious and inspiring
Im glad I got to see Paul do this. He told me about it this weekend at Ft de Chart over some drinks.
That is quite the course. I loved watching every last minute of it. Especially at the end watching him swagg the bullet to his rifle.
Really enjoyed this. Paul is a legend!
Bloody brilliant! Been through several of these over the years including one that involved horses! Dunking the strike a lite is a new one on me…love it! Cheers!!!
That was not just the striker it was the hole kit with some of them
Thanks for sharing this great video, Ethan. Looks like a great time was had by all... I'm a bit jealous
Thank you for taking the time and effort in making and posting this video.
My pleasure!
Love the music!
You can dunk the powder horns before the shooting event too, just make it difficult. What a fun event! You get to practice field skills and meet new folks too.
Now that looks like fun! Eli invited me up there several years ago, one of these days I’m gonna have to make that trek. Great video Ethan!
Wow what a great weekend!!!!!
Ethan, great video! That is what it is all about. 😊😊 . Fun and enjoyable times. Great family time together. You are doing so much for our hobby and lifestyle. Thank you again . God bless. Now it is off to church.
Hey Ethan! What a great time that must have been! It looked like everyone was having a lot of fun & fellowship. The good natured joshing & commentary was just an added plus. Thanks for sharing... and I intend to take a pretty close squint at my own set up! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
This looks like a lot of fun!
What a great time!
The spring on the trap looked a little tight from this angle. Great job on the coverage and great job under pressure to folks that had to improvise!! Determination and thinking outside the box built a nation!
That looks like a hell of a fun time!
Man that’s awesome! That’s something I’d love to do next year, if I can get all the gear I need by then! Great video! 👍
Paul is a real backwoodsman! He would have been running with Kent on, Boone, etc!
TC
Wow. That was cool. What skills. They all were amazing.
Great video Ethan
WOW! This is a superb video Ethan. Your movie really reminds me of my favorite 'Folk Firearms Collective' videos featuring the Fawn Creek Muzzleloader crew. Clifton Hicks banjo score. Really well done dude. Thanks Ethan!
Excellent show!
This is an awesome video. We are just getting back into rendezvous after a few decades of hiatus. Can you tell me where coal creek is since we travel a lot and we might come across it some day. Thank you.
That looks like so much fun
This is why I love muzzleloading!
Great video Ethan!
Glad you liked it Daniel. A little different, a little fun!
Looked like a great time.
That is a great idea for a competition/skills evaluation. Thank you for sharing.
Amazing! I loved this video.
Love this but as a trapper I gotta say the way the first guy tried setting that double long spring was painful to watch lol. Still looks like a great time !
Great video
This would be so much fun!
Very cool, looks like blast.
That was great! 🤠
Very cool competition, wish that stuff happened out here in California
Great ideas for the scenario’s!
What is the average caliber size for these flintlocks? And are there any restrictions on caliber size? My son and I are looking into getting started with this great group of people. Any and all help would greatly be appreciated.
Whatever caliber works for you. Early rifles tended to be larger caliber, as the big game disappeared smaller calibers became more popular. I use a .36 for squirrel and a .54 for deer. If you get one it's almost guaranteed more will follow.
The previous comment hit the nail on the head, the .54 is probably the most common at something like this, but 50 and 45 are very comon as well. Most will have a bore larger than .50 and one smaller than .50.
For this match, I brought my .62 smoothbore and a .54 pistol to a match like this but there were several .40s around as well.
Great video Ethan. So fun to watch these compete.
Great fun and impressive.
Paul is your typical smoothbore guy. Out performs the rifle guys.
Your awesome be safe out there big fan
Looks like great fun.😃
Very impressive!
Looks so fun
Super cool stuff
Hi, this might be a good time to look for black powder and percussion caps. I tried to leave this a few minutes ago but it was blown away.
Shoots like this let's you know what you need to improve on ❤ it
I thought the same thing!!
Outstanding video
Thank you so much 😀
I also shared your video with my black powder shooting groups
Cool video!!
I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t see it basically hand shaped a round ball and then gong’s a target that’s amazing great stuff brother
Wow,those women are impressive. Not many women like them.
And save a piece of C shape flint. For scraping sticks to tinder. A little dry pine or birch it'll shave up good not all wood does
We grow bloody butcher. Gets tall!
Thanks that was fun to watch
That Chick is Bad-A$$.
Best video ever.
Epic!
❤ good vid.
Love this video I have Thomas Center 45cal. Counter
What kind of powder was everyone using, homemade or production?
Paul is amazing
Is there an organization/schedule of these types of events? I would really like to attend one in the southeast. Thanks for sharing.
ReenactingSchedule.org is the site I use
I need a full uncut! So much editing makes for too short of a vid! Lol
Some of you never trap before , you step on the trap to set it .
Right, use your two feet, or two forked sticks to push down on the springs. Set it on a rock, or a piece of wood, or, ideally, carry a flat piece of wood with you to use as a solid base.
Hi details please on how to do this competition
Paul is the man
What type of smooth bore was he shooting?
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this video. Much better than all the political bullshit online.
When's the next one and where?????
How to make fire with a flintlock. A sea service pistol is ideal something with a nice powerful spark Take a little bit of a cotton ball. Dust with priming powder put in pan of empty gun fire a couple of times. It'll be a hot coal . A matchlock is still an excellent weapon fwiw. Never goes outta style. And does anyone shoot blunderbuss as a competitive gun ?
cool man cool
They could use some snares
Is that Benjamin Franklin?
Muskets and hatchet throwing 🪓, wish I could be there to experience this event I would love it ❤
