At this point in season 1, Fox was on the verge of firing Gillian and recasting Scully; Gillian basically saved her job by showing she could go toe-to-toe with renowned scenery chewer Brad Dourif (Luther Lee Boggs) in a scene and not get blown away.
The way the episode ends with "He was my father" just had me crying for days, this episode its so good, from Scully following her emotions to Boggs acting, its just so good.
Great pick for an episode review! Mulder & Scully's role reversal as "believer and skeptic" is pretty rare, but always interesting and always leads to an engaging episode.

I love that Scully needed validation from her father. Doesn't every kid want to know if their parents are proud. Her tiny rage at Boggs is epic no wonder we all fell in love with her. Her rebellious side also follows her profession. She's a medical doctor yet she gives up her chosen profession to work at the FBI knowing her father did not like her decision.

I love this episode thoroughly. Had it on tape and This and Clyde Bruckman probably competed for my most rewatched episode. The psychic take on Silence of the Lambs is brilliant and Scully's role reversal with Mulder really developed the character so well. Brilliant episode.

During the Lord of the Rings filming Brad Dourif never broke charachter as Wormtongue. This and the fact that his accent was so good, caused many of his costars to be surprised to find afterwards he was an American.
Your commentary is just as good as the series itself. Cant believe you notice the same minor details and things that I do in every scene. Like how breathtakingly beautiful Scully is, baby Scully (same thoughts I have awwwwwww in every scene from season 1) , how desirable Mulder looks, and all the things that do that won't fit well with a real life couple but are so cute with them :). Just finished binge watching the whole franchise and your reviews are kind of like an essential official extension to it

I started watching this video. Then, I got intrigued by the storyline. I have seen all X-files episodes at least once but for some reason the plot of this one escaped me. So I went and watched the entire episode. Then I fucking came back here and fucking watched the entire video of you talking about the episode I just watched. Call me Shook Scully, bitches!!! OH ALSO it makes me very excited that young people are still watching the shit out of the original X-files. Like you probably weren't even born when this shit was on and you can appreciate it's awesomeness which makes me really happy.
Throughout the series Scully and Mulder explore the "realms of extreme possibilities" between them. I think this is almost a verbatim quote of what she says in season 11 episode 03 as she walks to the connecting door: "it's not out of the realm of extreme possibilities." Great full circle quote that connects them from their beginning. Go get yourself some woman!
Can I please just say that I know you aren’t doing These anymore, but I love them! I totally wish you would come back and do like “best episodes” from each season!
I'm a big fan of the mythology episodes, but Beyond the Sea is a top 10 episode for sure. Role-reversals and psychological tension provided the empathy for Scully that drove this episode. Brad Dourif's performance as Luther Lee Boggs stole the show though. As a general rule, Mulder's role reversal episodes strain the status quo, but his lack of presence in the second half of the episode compensated for it. BTW, Never Again is another one of my favorite Scully-centric episodes.

Also (and I'm hoping this comment isn't too loaded) have you seen The Exorcist 3 and/or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? They both have AMAZING very different performances from Stephen Dourif and if you like this episode I definitely recommend that you check out The Exorcist 3 as I feel it's a very under rated sequel that has a similar vibe to Beyond The Sea in regards to someone interrogating Dourif's character about a case but goes into questions of the nature of faith and theology (and Fabio's in it :D ) I fully recommend it. Prosit!
