Every single day there are people that die and absolutely senseless accidents that should never happen. They really need to find a cure for stupid. My heart goes out to all the families of the people involved.

The string of comments regarding this tragic accident are pretty much cold hearted and disrespectful. These are dead sons, daughters, parents you get the picture. What if it was one of your own. Yep. My son was killed on Idaho roads last summer cuz of a man driving a dump truck not paying attention and speeding. Some laws need changed in that state. God speed to those lost. And may God have mercy on the man’s soul who killed them.
So maybe they, the city, shouldn't have removed the concrete dividers when the fixed that portion of the road last year. That looks like the exchange junction for 20 and I-15 by the green belt. So i would argue the city is to blame for these deaths. Those divders were there for good reason. Yes, the driver should have been paying attention, but the cities complete disregard for citizen safety, by removing safety barriers proven to be effective on that road, made this crash much worse than it should have been. That truck would have never hit that van. 6 people would still be alive, if the city actually cared for the publics well being. Them barriers saved many lives in the past 34 years of me living in idaho falls.
Road design is so important for ensuring safety on the roads. Too bad so many leave it as an afterthought or just try to always fully blame the drivers. So many deaths and injuries could have and can be prevented if we really get serious about how to design our roads properly.

What you are saying is if I was driving across a bridge and went off the side cause no guard rails were present it's my fault I died. While that maybe technically true. The government that's in charge of infrastructure, has a legal and moral obligation to protect us, even if it when we make a mistake. They have an obligation to mitigate the loss of life. Them removing the barriers puts everybody on that road at an unnecessary risk. The passenger van has seatbelts for everyone in the vehicle, as long as the van was not over packed with people. With so many killed in the van, you can conclude that the passengers were not wearing their seatbelts. At least the pickup driver survived the crash, once the driver is healed from the collision, the courts can send him to prison for life.

When I drove in a van pool, the rule was you wore seatbelts or you didn't ride. A flying body can be a projectile in a crash or a rollover. Maybe somebody flew out the doors in this crash. Except for the driver, this van looks survivable. The roof is not crushed, the cabin looks square.
I saw the van today when I was getting off the freeway. The van was completely smashed in on the side of the driver side and following along the side of the van. If somebody was sitting there they would’ve been done.

I spent some time in Sweden and they had very strict rules about driving when I was there. You must first go to a driver training center to be taught to drive a car (expensive), then you get your license (also expensive) Alcohol limit for DUI.02 in the US.08. You do not drink and drive in Sweden. Break the law-lose your car. No exceptions. However one thing most of Europe has that we don't, inexpensive, common, and efficient public transportation. ,

The problem in Idaho is their is some crazy drivers, don't know if it is meth,or potatoes? I truck through their often and always encounter out of mind drivers in pickup trucks, and other 4 wheelers. I won't exclude semi trucks with Idaho licenses plates, some of the worst sort I rank with California and Michigan. But there is plenty of the same from home state of Texas. If you can get law enforcement to ride around in semi trucks it would eye opening as to what sits behind a steering wheel.
I drive 5 days a week in idaho, have for 5 years, it is nuts out here, I have witnessed some of the most insane drivers doing the craziest and dangerous stunts, running red lights is quite popular as well, most are looking down as they blow through,…on a positive note though, there are numerous auto junkyards with a vast supply of crashed cars- a parts puller paradise.
You need a special license and special training to drive a semi. Maybe you don't need to go that far for pickups but I think when you have a vehicle that size there should be some extra training and awareness required.
No 1. The van had 15 people in it including the driver. That van did not look damaged enough to kill 6 people unless they were thrown forward in the collision due to lack of safety harnesses.
The people at the front of the van had no chance of survival, but so many dead and injured? What are the odds of all 15 occupants of the van wearing seatbelts? Maybe the driver and perhaps the front passenger(s), but unlikely anyone in the back of the van did. I watched an analysis from a similar accident on the NTSB site. It showed the position in the van of each of the occupants and how they travelled inside the van upon impact. The rear passengers that died were crushed by bodies flying towards the front from the rear of the van.

Auto Insurance statistics actually show that larger, heavier vehicles do CAUSE more damage and injuries, but protect the driver/occupants much better. Lighter vehicles don't cause as much damage in collisions, but the driver/occupants die at a much higher rate. I'll keep my heavy vehicle.

Usually a new white van with passengers would have a tax payer paid for state plate on it hauling prisoners and there's no seat belts in there for the prisoners and their handcuffed so they can't reach out and Brace themselves in the 3vent of a crash, a perfect setup for death. And the pickup truck well if it had nine passengers I can guess there was no English being spoken in that truck,as you can see all the work related tools in it and they were really working hard to read that road sign to see what it said cuz not a single word of it was in Spanish. Maybe he was using Google translate with his cell phone and dropped the phone trying to figure out what the road sign said. And the deputy driving the white van to get the prisoners transported they always exceed the speed limit cuz they're immune to speed limits they'll do 90 in a 55.a newer truck is because they have 9 seven dollar an hour paychecks and their bad credit was left behind in Mexico so the bank approved their credit for the truck

Usually a new white van with passengers would have a tax payer paid for state plate on it hauling prisoners and there's no seat belts in there for the prisoners and their handcuffed so they can't reach out and Brace themselves in the 3vent of a crash, a perfect setup for death. And the pickup truck well if it had nine passengers I can guess there was no English being spoken in that truck,as you can see all the work related tools in it and they were really working hard to read that road sign to see what it said cuz not a single word of it was in Spanish. Maybe he was using Google translate with his cell phone and dropped the phone trying to figure out what the road sign said. And the deputy driving the white van to get the prisoners transported they always exceed the speed limit cuz they're immune to speed limits they'll do 90 in a 55.a newer truck is because they have 9 seven dollar an hour paychecks and their bad credit was left behind in Mexico so the bank approved their credit for the truck
