To spend $10K on a Disney vacation for an 18 month old, it's for YOU, not the 18 month old. That child won't remember that trip except for what he sees in the pictures you take and what you tell him he loved. If it's REALLY a once in a lifetime trip, wait until your kids are 10 at least. They will be able to rode more rides and they will remember a LOT more!

That child doesnt even recognise Disney characters ... UNLESS mommy plonked the toddler in front of an iPod with Disney propaganda on repeat to keep it quiet.
That's TERRIBLE parenting btw., because it is PASSIVE and turns the child into a CONSUMER DRONE.

annnnnnd, young kids, don't really enjoy those theme parks. If they can't get on rides swiftly, the kids will be bored, complain about sore feet, the heat, and you'll be miserable dealing with a petulant child.
You also will be forced to shut 'em up by buying over priced things for them. You will hate it and the kid will not really think about it.
I barely think or remember my Disney trips when I was around 10 with my parents. I can remember two or three things the entire day and yes one of them was sore feet.

Hearing abut food prices at Disney World makes me feel less concerned abut Doordash prices although I do try to spend less than $20 If I can or just a bit over there. Like from Wingstop I will get one sandwich and four tenders. Even when they have the Wingsto deal to "save money, you have to spend so much that your bill is t high there anyway, but this way it can be gotten occssionally.
Also Crumbl Cookies was reasonably priced on there before but not too long ago they increased it so now a fur bx is $26 with their suggested tip. S if I ever want Crumbl now I can only get two cookies, or cake, whatever, although the one time I had cake from there it was NOT good, the lowest C-tier dessert I have had frm Crumbl, thank goodness word n the street is their banana pudding this week is lame. You can go on a nice, European vacation for the price that Disney is asking nowadays. For example, for a family four to go to Disney and stay in the parks at a value resort, it'll cost them nearly 10K and get less perks; no fast pass, no magical express, no dining plans. Back in 2017, it would've cost a family of four to go to Disney and stay in the parks at a value resort, it would've cost them 7K and have three fast passes per day, direct transportation from MCO to Walt Disney World through the Magical Express, and eat like a royal with the moderate Disney Dining Option - 1 Sit-down Meal, 1 quick service, and 1 snack per day. We took a family trip to Europe this spring with 2 adults and 2 children. We were there for 16 days, visited 3 countries, and the daily cost was far less than a low to mid-range trip to WDW and its hotels/resorts. That includes airfare from the US, daily meals, lodging, admission to the famous sights, and transportation. And I can tell you that the experience of taking our kids to visit different countries and cultures was 1,000 times more meaningful and enjoyable than the crowds and nonsense of Disney. Been there, done that, and it wasn't even close. Our kids will never forget that trip.

  • @meganashlea

Our last WDW trip was 2014, we went with my parents. 4 adults, 1 child (a month shy from 3). Flights, 2 weeks at the Fort Wilderness cabins (moderate), dining plan (full service), memory maker and park hopper tickets, cost us around $10k. We shared the cabin and split the cost. I was working part time at Target as a second job and bought Disney gift cards every pay period to pay for the Disney portion of the trip (saved 10% this way), put it on my red card and went to guest service to immediately pay the balance with cash. We had a good time and my son vaguely remembers bits and pieces but it was more for us while he still beloved in the magic. I’d love to take my son and nephew back (before Iger destroys everything) but I have a hard time justifying the price vs the value of what you get now. We’ve been to Universal a ton the last few years and it’s been so easy to just go, no planning. Hardest thing is picking the hotel and finding flights. I’m debating on taking the kids to WDW next summer but tent camping at the fort. We can cook our own breakfast/dinner for most days this way as well as the tent site being cheaper. We already have all the camping gear so that helps lol. Taking the kids camping this weekend to Hershey park for 3 nights to see if they would like to do a longer stay in FL (watching the weather to adjust my expectations) 😢 as for taking on debt… NO… we won’t do that. I will use credits cards to benefit me, with cash back and no interest for x months. I opened a discover card last year for an Alaska cruise, no interest 18 months and cash back rewards. We got over $300 back and I had it paid off in 9 months. (Still have a month of no interest to go). My dad’s health isn’t the best so I’m worried about how much time we have left to experience things like these trips.

When I was a little kid, Dad would take me to Disney at least twice a year. We lived close enough that it was barely a 1 hour drive. Our visits were often "spur-of-the-moment." Bear in mind that my family was about as low on the income scale as you could be and still considered "middle class." Even in my later adult life, I continued to visit at least once (usually twice) a year. But by the late 00s, the prices started climbing astronomically. Yes, there had been significant increases in the mid-80s, but that was primarily motivated by the fact that individual tickets for rides were done away with and your admission gave you "all you wanted to ride." By the mid teens the price had finally crossed $100 and kept rising at an ever increasing rate. I simply couldn't justify going to any of the parks on a whim at that point. So, Disney lost out on all the money I would spend on food, drink and souvenirs. In the last few years the price increases have flattened out abruptly. But it looks like Disney is trying OTHER ways of getting tons of money from attendees. I used to be able to buy a ticket, eat a dinner at one of the pavilion's at Epcot, snack throughout the day, and then buy some trinkets at the stores for whatever film they were currently featuring that I was interested in. And I used to be able to do all that for under a hundred dollars (WELL under in the 90s.) But not anymore. Disney has priced me out. They had better be wary. They are continuing to price more and more of the middle class out. Eventually, (if it hasn't already happened) -they are going to reach a tipping point where they cannot get enough attendees at the parks that even the increased prices can make up for. When that happens, Disney will likely enter a final financial spiral.
What more can I say? Disney should never have spent all those billions of dollars on media companies, then put narcissistic people in charge of them, thus turning money-making I.P.s into disasters that cost them hundreds of millions in losses with each release. They paid Lucas over 4 billion for Star Wars, one of the most lucrative I.P.s in existence, then gave it to people that literally drove the public away in disgust. That is an incredible condemnation on what activism and cronyism has done to profitability, for Disney and so many other companies.
I will fondly remember the Disney that existed for decades under competent, if sometimes antagonistic (looking at you Eisner) leadership. But Iger and his sycophants have literally driven Disney to the brink of ruin. Don't take my word for it. Just look at the history of the stock prices and compare it with the timeline of decisions Disney has made in the last decade. But the Disney I went to as a child and an adult is now going away. What they are pushing for development (re-development, I suppose) does not seem economically viable to me. They've already priced out myself and others in my economic level by having to raise prices to pay for their piss-poor decisions that cost them BILLIONS in terms of lost revenue and stock. It seems only a matter of time before they literally price themselves out of existence.

I thought I was making lifetime memories, but I guess 5 was just too young for all that. He was too small to ride anything with a height requirement then too, so we missed a lot of things. In retrospect, I should have waited a couple more years for him to be bigger. I also saved up for 2 years and paid cash for the entire trip. I was raised not to use credit, and if you can't pay cash, then you wait until you can. No, we didn't go on a vacation every year, and sometimes going to Aunt and Uncle so and so's and camping was our vacation.

It's the love for everything Disney that keeps fans coming back no matter how high the prices are. But its a lot like being in love with someone who won't love you back but is only intetested in taking advantage of you.

I’ve been to Disney 5-6 times over the past 22 years and never went in debt doing it. Had a family of 5 and we did everything to cut costs but didn’t sacrifice anything. We stayed at the shades of green - bought tickets there and went to all the parks. We brought lunch into the parks and ate dinner at one of restaurants. Got Park hopper passes and maxed out the fast pass that came with them. Had a wonderful time. I wouldn’t have taken my family if we were going to be in debt doing it. One last thing - I live in TN and Dollywood is a great alternate park. Highly recommend it.

While I’m not personally a fan of Disney, I don’t really see how they can be blamed for the financial irresponsibility of those families. I would never take out debt to go to a theme park. Regarding prices, I could still afford to go to Disney every year if I wanted to because my employer increases wages annually to account for inflation. I took my kids there a few months ago since they’ve been wanting to ride some of the rides that’s been added since their last visit, and I didn’t go into debt to do it. Of course I didn’t book a 2 week trip because spending half a month at theme parks doesn’t sound like a sane idea. I still can’t believe the person you mentioned did that and took out interest bearing credit card debt to do so. Utterly illogical and makes me question the individual’s mental capacity to carry out basic daily tasks as a functional adult.

When I go to Orlando for WDW and Universal I just stay outside the parks at hotels that has shuttles to the parks. WDW don't really offer anything besides being close to the parks. I like hotels that has full kitchens so I can cook and stuff.

Taking out loans and going into debt....for what, exactly? Genie+ hassle, virtual que headaches, broken rides, dirty parks, and rude employees. This is the rite of passage families need to go 20k+ in debt for?

My wife is an elementary school principal. I'm a teacher and own a carpet cleaning business on the side. We still can afford to go only once a year. We determine when we can go (usually spring or fall break) and have to save all year for it. We usually stay 5 or 6 nights at a value to moderate resort and one day in each park. We've never spent over 5k but this year, we're staying at a gateway hotel because it was substantially cheaper than even All Star Sports and we got a suite. We save money by using disney gift cards from kroger and banking fuel points till we get $1 off per gallon. The money we save on fuel usually equates to $400-500 on the back end. We've learned a few tricks over the years but we still can't afford to just go on a whim.

I went probably 18 times up until I was say 50. Then honestly it just started to get to me. I can easily more afford it now but I’ve come to resent the faux luxury they have. It’s loud it’s crowded and now it’s confusing. I’d like to see the new stuff but we’ve decided maybe it’s not worth it. You cannot have this faux luxury and charge real luxury prices..

I live near Wisconsin Dells, which has dozens of parks and attractions, including the giant water park Noah’s Ark, the water/resort park Mt. Olympus (which includes an indoor water park, several roller coasters, and no less than 4 go-kart tracks), plus a number of other exciting things from mini golf to duck boat tours just to name a few. On average, a 2 person trip for a week is around only $2k-and you’d have to do EVERYTHING to spend as much as a trip to Disneyland. That’s terrible!

Yes, I definitely know some. They take out HELOCs, unsecured personal loans (if they have good credit), and max out ALL of their credit cards - just for one trip to Disney. Insane.

Over ten years ago, we were still able to purchase premium annual passes for WDW and could stay up to 21 days on property as resort guests in the Pop, AoA, the Poly, Wilderness Lodge, Yacht Club (our favorite Deluxe) and Coronado Springs. We could eat in the parks and purchase quite an amount of merchandise. The same vacation style would cost now beyond 10.000 bucks. And I know who is guilty.

The saddest part to me is that Walt Disney’s dream when he started Disneyland and later Disney World was that families would be able to go on vacation for a reasonable price that everyone can afford. It is so far from that now. Come on Disney. When will we start living Walt’s dream again. We have gone so far from that!!!!
