Welcome back for our second series with Justin Bieber’s tracking and mix engineer, Josh Gudwin! This time, we are focusing on the massive 2015 hit single ‘Love Yourself’. Despite a very low track count and troublesome guitar recording, this record was a global sensation thanks to effective songwriting, pristine vocals and Gudwin’s fully ITB mix. With the multi-track session open, Josh gives a background story to the track, then takes you through every aspect of the session. You will learn how he reduced the buzz of a guitar amp, tuned, EQ’d, compressed, and de-essed Justin’s vocals, added lush reverb to the trumpet recording, and incorporated numerous effects. Using GUIs of analog-modelled plug-ins, he also shows the typical signal chain and parameter settings that he uses to record Justin’s vocals, while commenting on the microphone of choice. Furthermore, he takes you through his mix buss chain step by step! - Видеоклипы

I can’t unhear that ringing now!
I really cant hear it in the original, can you?
@ yeah me too!
@@M0M... A bad preamp, or poorly isolated power maybe?
@@ColonelClusterFunk I'd imagine power would be a much lower frequency
@@ColonelClusterFunk sounds like the guitar pickups were too close to the computer monitor or something digitally like that.
Simplicity is key
Listen bohemiam rhapsody 😂 the love for the art is key ❤️
everyone thinks you need fancy gear but you don’t 💯 just some really good plugins and knowledge 😂
Jaden Hurdle but believe me when I say a lot of these records are definitely tracked through hardware and mixed with plugins hardware gives you a certain depth and fullness you won't get from just using a interface straight and adding plugins later on
thats actually not a simple production at all
I knew Ed Sheeran wrote it. Didn't know he sang the higher harmony though.
I knew that when I first heard d song. I cud hear his voice in it.i cud hear his higer melodic style
Same
Seriously?
Thet both wrote it.

All my musicians, rappers, engineers, producers, etc who be in the studio know exactly how relatable seeing this is. Y’all seen Ed didn’t even need to be In a studio to record his vocals. I love this shit
if you think your favorite artist doesn’t use auto tune then you probably aren’t much educated in music lol. auto tune isn’t what people think, it simply helps smoothens the vocals out and helps it to be where it needs to be before it’s distributed
Thank Youuuu
Where exactly in the video does the mixing engineer use autotune? Autotune is a specific piece of software but I don't see it used.
@@randyt700 cause you don't know shit about production

Finally somebody said it !!!
That reverb is just amazing!!
Very cool! It's interesting how they actually re-recorded the guitar cause Ed's recording was too noisy, but the new take they made didn't have the same feel as the Ed version, so they decided to use the Ns1 noise reduction plug in from waves to fix it more or less. I use that plug in too and it's really great
I wish he went over the whole process
He does if you buy the membership

i really learn a lot from this channel
Too short

This is a masterpiece 🌊🔊
We need more of this stuff
Wow wow wow!! Sounds amazing!
Here are the professionals !!!
is it Ed record the guitar part too??
Yeah
Why wouldn't they redo the guitar if that was in there ? Seems very odd for such a high profile artist
Recorded on tour sent to mix
@@austinglabus-macleod1678 They still could've re recorded it wtf lol
Probably because they've got a great vibe the first time and didn't want to mess with it by redoing it just because of one frequency. It isn't odd it's actually really common to leave imperfections as they give something special to the song
Who cares
Yeah it's well known that Ed does some backing vocals from his demo version
Esse é mestre !
Brabo
How did he use reverb and delay on the vocal. I do not have money to watch the show just because it is too expensive for me. The vocal effect sounds modern. How did he get that sound?
Mad work
You did an amazing 🧡🎵
Now this is really cool! 😎

Ed did the harmony...?!! Thought it's Bieber..🤔
Justin get’s autotuned and then earns $1 million
No they both did together

I think I like this song more today.

I like how he stuck in a quick glimpse of the auto-tune plug-in.....lol
yeah exactly lol and didn't talk anything about it at all
What is up with all these new comments on this video that have absolutely nothing to do with audio engineering? Lmao

Ed might aswell be credited for this song.

Are these all the plug-ins that were used to mix the vocals ?
What was that? a teaser?
Who wants to hear the talk ?
what software he is using guys?
Sir what company is your audio interface
propably uad apollo twin
Which software is that?
What plugins are on JB lead vocal?
I dont believe that you use plugins at all
Lmao what?
What is the audio interface that he use?
Lol! Auto-tune 😅 1:38
Guitarra Pa´ Todos using auto tune in a song is like using the pedal on a piano, it ends up being better for everyone haha
I bet you think your favourite artist doesn't use it... Just don't laugh at it, accept everyone uses it. The fact you made a comment shows how ignorant you are to the mixing process. People like you make mixing a bit taboo for artists.
What's "lol" about it? 100% of singing pop/rap-artists use it and it ain't no secret.
Thanks to Cher 👍🏽🤣
So Easy
which DAW is he using ?
Pro tools
Can y’all make a free one of these on RUclips as like a trial, I’m scared to pay for it and sit there and watch them speed thru the mix using expensive plugin presets that i don’t have
But they need the money to pay for all that analog gear sitting around him.
The name of soundcard what he have on the table?
It's not a sound card, it's a monitor controller the Avocet II I think
So Christian Bale is now a world class mixer
I'd hire Batman to mix my record any day. As long as he doesn't make all my vocals sound like Bane

1:38 is that AutoTune?
You’d be hard pressed to find any modern song that doesn’t use auto tune to some degree
@Paul Fress 20 is fairly mid to subtle - 15-8 is s lot and 7-0 is the "Autotune sound"
Waves plugins:)
Interesting but he showed barely anything lol
This Looks Like a Commercial For Plugins.
The obligatory shot of Autotune lol
won't get a pop song without pitch correction tho. comes with the territory.
I think its normal if not too much, cause i watch some tutorial mixing and they usually used autotune a bit to fix vocal audio
If Autotune is pressed hard, it will make Justin sound like T Pain. Autotune is not like your parents that you lean on to everytime you fuck things up in your life.
People will use every single plugin under the sun on their vocal chain but act like autotune is the villain lmao
Nathan Carrille Music Nah, it’s just funny that normally they print the AT or hide the plugin. But nope, clearly it’s being used. Which id hope it was being used. The public doesn’t like out of tune vocals in 2020.
When he took out all the music, and just left the dry head voice vocal..

there's nothing wrong about it. im sure you think 100% of your favourite artists don't use it. sorry to break your bubble but each and every artist uses it. the fact that you wrote this comment shows how ignorant you are.

WHY WOULD I WANT TO HEAR A BIEBER SONG
Making pop music takes a lot less time then making electronic music.
Yeah. Just put it in ProTools then Bounce.
What’s the point of flying to another studio to finish the mix? Seems a little strange to me.
My guess would be to meet with the artist and get his input on the song
Maybe the room? The vibe?
Don’t underestimate things like vibe. These things are the most important ones in a song. U can record in ur bedroom with the worst acoustic uve ever listened to an an inexpensive mic but if the vibe is amazing the song will be amazing too
Different room sound, different speakers, different perspective on the track altogether.
A different vibe ..nothing strange
This video is so pointless
Didnt know they used autotune
Autotune is not supposed to be heard most times but as we know alot of artist abuse it a bit.
Everyone uses autotune, it ain't no secret.
facts i knew it was ed on the punch in
Mixing tracks is one of the easiest parts of music. Dont let these guys fool you lol. Most producers can mix their own shit in all honesty.
Let’s hear your mix and master lmao
most of the mixing of today's pop music is better done than the music itself
HyyerLabs I actually know how to do all of this. I do it pretty well. Im not as good at mixing vocals and that is where i will give some credit to mixers. But its only because i do not have the best vocal mixing plug ins and programs. Mixing is an old school record label thing. Most young dudes are not sending shit off to mixers, they are producers who do it themselves. Ask any producer and they will tell you they HATE when mixers mess with their instrumental levels. All mixers do is make sure the levels and frequencies are good. Its as simple as you open the plug in.... turn the level up or down. That’s basically it.
@@ButteryAssNigga You actually couldnt be more wrong. 1. You dont have to own the best mixing plugins, if you know the basic almost any stock plugin can do the job you wish.
2. And as a good engineer you talk with the client and make sure if they have made the static mix like gain staging and such so we know where to go. As a good engineer you also ask if the client has a reference to where the mix should go. Again so you know the artists idea of the song. 3. You say mixing is basically turn the level up and down. - Thats just the gain staging part, and after that comes the mixing where you turn a track to a song with all the small details not many notices but would notice if it wasnt made. Its here the song comes alive.
@@ButteryAssNigga lmao if you rely on plugins to mix then you dont know shit about mixing
