The Sacredness of To'Hajiilee, New Mexico

- Soak in the quiet beauty of To'Hajiilee, New Mexico, U.S.A., in the second installment of my interview with Marty Monte as he talks about some of the sacred sites visited by medicine men. To'Hajiilee is a small community of Navajos (Dine') located just west of Albuquerque that was federally recognized only in the 1960s. Community members are often regarded by other Dine' as outsiders due to historical falsehoods around The Long Walk, so their contributions--as well as the sacredness of To'Hajiilee--have been forgotten by most. Learn with me about some of these important geological features and enjoy the expansive vistas.

That's interesting, I've been planning on going to Seboyeta for a while now. Do you still have family there?
My ancestors are from Tohajiilee NM. I know of its history. Displaced from Seboyeta, NM in 1749. Thanks to the Fransican priests, history goes back to 1580 of my ancestors. Catholicism was rejected back then, but ironically, Christianity is favored now. I was told my family land is near those canyons in against the mesas. Thank you for sharing. My last name is Platero.

Have you heard of the place where the air flows from the ground through holes in the rocks ? The airflow comes up in clockwise swirls .
Another sacred place where offerings are made and songs are sung.
Rough translation is the wind/breezes airway.
My cheii' use to talk about our language being one but different in the subtleties of pronunciation from the north to the south , and from the east to the west.

This is very interesting. Also an incredibly beautiful area. I'm working on learning about Navajo people and culture. I haven't learned much about the regions or clans specifically, other than the mention of which clans were the original ones. So this is good to learn.

Yep , he taught us how to cure colds by boiling sage brush an drink t it's juice . .
