    I get a very nice finish: thin seal coat of shellac, then 2 applications Poly-x using 4-0 steel wool to rub the 2nd one in. Really beautiful.

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  2 года назад +1

      Nice, I haven’t tried “poly-x”. Typically the poly finishes I’ve used in the past result in a naturally harder finish (due to the poly hardness) which tends not to respond well to rubbing out with 4-0 steel wool…unless it is in some kind of blend where it works better…I’m assuming Poly-x is a blend? Thanks! 👍

    Tom, as always really appreciate the great instruction on a completely (to me) new method. Yet it’s been around a really long time. There’s a far cry from another guy on RUclips I saw recently who makes this whole table top with all kinds of “dubious” methods and then at the end is like “then just slap on some poly and you’re good to go!” Nothing against the DIYer but it’s good to get some actual valid info👍

About to do my first veneering (a pair of speakers) - very excited, then on to finishing it! Watched your veneer sawing video. Learned a lot, will learn more from this one and the others ive saved. That’s awesome to hear Chris, I’m so glad you enjoy it and find it pushes you to go further. I am in the early stages of learning to play guitar and it’s stretching and pushing me in a whole other area…that seems unrelated but I think it is all related somehow. Architecture, or furniture design, was once famously described as “frozen music”, a description I like thinking about. I’m sure you are playing some great songs yourself. today, I sprayed the final coat of amber shellac 1.5 lb cut on a wooden panel that I mount Christian ikons on. Thanks to Tom for his many episodes on Shellac. I will eventually rug it out with 4 ought steel wool and put finishing wax on it. I love working with shellac, the cleanup of the spray gun is so easy and there are no dangerous rags that might catch on fire because you're using denatured alcohol. This has been a game changer for my ikons. The finishing can be done within a couple of days instead of a week using poly. Kudos!!!

      Oh that’s great to know Ron, I’m so glad you are enjoying the pleasure of using shellac! What kind of Christian icons do you work with? @@EpicWoodworking Hi Tom, sorry for the delay in replying. I never dreamed you would respond haha. Eastern Orthodox is the church I attend. I have mounted ikons depicting bible stories like Peter sinking after walking on water and the woman at the well from John 4. I also have made several saint icons, St Basil the Great, Athanasius, Kallistos and of course ones of the Lord and the Theotokos. I have been paid for a pair I made for a friend but mostly I make them for gifts. I buy the prints from a monastery in Boston. Great guys. I mount them on glued panels, usually spruce, and cut them and router a keyhole and a roundover edge. I stain them with red mahogany oil stain and now I shellac them and rub them out and wax, thanks to you. I was using poly and it was too plastic looking but it still looked good. Thanks for asking. I can send you a few photos if you would like to see them. I had never worked with wood before. I was a nurse and a computer programmer/analyst.

    Hi Tom, the designer table has been an excellent learning series on SNL. I learned so much,
    thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills. If you wanted, Kris could combine the past
    5 weeks together into a course and post it on the website, just a thought.
    I feel shellac is the best finish, most of the time. Your method using shellac is excellent, very helpful and will greatly improve my finishing skills thank you, oh the french polishing method also. Looking forward to new project courses you and Kris have planned this year. See you on SNL.

      Thanks Steve! It would be good to turn those SNLs into an edited video at least. For it to work as a course, I think I would have needed to have gone into more detail in places that were breezed over a bit.
