After about 8 years in the Navy, I got hired as a Federal employee at Camp Pendleton. I started on July 1982 and retired on Oct. 2015. Thanks for the joyride from 62 Area to the Main Gate.
I was there 05 to 09. You're right. So much has changed. At the time I was desperate to leave that base but now I feel like I left a part of my soul behind. I don't miss the toxic command and all that, but Pendleton was and is my home. Visiting Mateo is on my bucket list
I made that drive probably 50 times. My first duty station was at Schools Bn, Camp Del Mar Feb 1972. I spent my whole time at Camp Pendleton mostly in 14 Area Mainside (not pictured) until I was discharged in 1974. I loved cruising around the camp. It sure has changed with the new buildings and the Pacific Plaza near the Main Gate. I guess it provides employment for a lot of the dependents, and that's a good thing.
Well Devil Dog it's time for you to get on a plane and go visit!!! I do San Diego is nice ... Always a great getaway! (Even better when you come in the summer and rent a convertible)
You should take mission road through fallbrook towards I-15. All that stuff on the north side is camp pendleton but way in the back. That is some good scenery too@@CFloPhotography
I was station at San Mateo from 89-91. My son is station there, so I do get there from Arizona often. My son laughs at me when I tell him about the flat top Barracks that we lived in. I don't recognize that much. I can't remember where the old marine barracks once stood that were torn down. Maybe where the new barracks are built is my best guess. San Mateo have changed so much.
The flat tops? I lived in those for a bit. We called them the Crack houses. I lived in those for maybe 3 months till I got a room at the newer castle barracks.
Holy shit. I was stationed at Mateo from 05 to 09. I watched the part of Mateo over and over and there is so much I dont recognize. Lots of change. And that's just near the road. I'm curious what the rest of Mateo looks like now.
Grewup in Seal Beach in the 50's, 60's. Moved out in 87 to Wyoming, Haven't been on Pendleton since I was discharged on 28 Aug 69. Started my journey on 26 Nov 65 at MCRD SanDiego Plt. 176. Qualified with the M-14. Then 2nd Infantry Training Regiment in Feb. 66. At Camp Horno Hotel Co. On to Staging Bn Bravo Co. at Mainside in late 67. Deployed to Phu Bai with the 5th Marine Reg G/2/5. Humped the 'Blooper' and 1911A1. We moved to An Hoa combat base later. After rreturning from Nam. Was was a weapons instructor until discharge on 28 Aug 69. Even though Pendleton has changed drasticly still recogonize some familiar landmarks. Sure you remember the open air 'Theater' at 2nd ITR. Had many a insert on the CH-46 'Phrog' and CH-34D.
Was there '71-'75 but dude, you like missed the most important area !!!!! Camp Del Mar, 21 Area, the beach, the place where those that trained, lived and left to free people. Track Vehicle School was main business in 21 Area, M48a3, LVTP5/7, 3rd Tracs., 1stFSR there too. Recognized Basilone Rd., Vandergriff Blvd. and front gate. Knew the place very well but aside from 22 Area didn't recognize much except great scenery. "TANK XING" great ! Well done.
This made me happy and a little annoyed. F**k Camp Lejeune. Camp Pendleton FOREVER. If you’ve never been to Camp Lejeune and you have the option not to come let me save you some time and grief. Stay as far away from this cesspool as possible. And the surrounding area (Jacksonville) is even worse. You’ve been warned. Miss SoCal so much!!!
Agree 100 percent Lejeune was a shithole in 85 went to San Diego for boot camp sent to that shithole Lejeune for school was never so friggin happy when I got orders for 3/1 and being from los angels 45 min up the road never so happy but after my first pump and pulling Libo in the PI wish I would have went to Marine Barracks subic bay but Pendleton for me is the best Marine Corps base
S/O to all Horno Marines. First Marines (begins with sign 11:12) Was in 1st Battalion, 9th Marines in the 1985-1986. BLT 1/9 WestPac 85 Also spent time at Las Flores (not pictured), 1st Tank Battalion in 1984. My son is stationed in MCAS out there right now (24 Area?). Good times.
Me too, was there this month for the first time in over 44 years. People driving way too fast and getting away with it, cars over the side of the road. All of the buildings are new pretty much and they're putting in Starbucks drive throughs! Yipes!
Was there from 73 to 76 at the naval hospital then 52 area dispensary and I like everyone else don't recognize a darn thing. Used to be old buildings and Quonset huts obviously not anymore
heloo, can i use your video on my TV Programm channel? i am a one of the creative team at Trending Trans7 and of course your channel youtube's name will published too i'm waiting for your feedback, thank you..
Just did an Uber drop off by area 22 the other day and saw that McDonald’s. And was thinking of this comment lmao I’ll see if I can post an updated video

89-93. The most beautiful place ive ever lived. I was in the 22 area across from the airstrip. Really miss this place
Very underrated for sure. I entered as an Uber driver and being able to see the preserved area was worth the longer drive

I was there 87-91 it doesn't look familiar at all to me now.
I really do miss the smell of Camp Pendleton, Specifically 43 Area Ammo Barracks at night. You can smell the wilderness.
