If you had the option of flying from Chicago to San Diego on a nonstop 737 or a 777-300/ER (via San Francisco), what would you choose? Being the airplane dork that I am, I naturally opted for the 777.
This is a full review of United Airlines Polaris Business Class on the 777-300/ER from ORD to SFO in February 2022. I had seat 15L for the 4 hour and 35 minute flight, and once again, United totally impressed me.
It wasn’t a perfect experience, but hey. It wasn’t a 737 either.

This plane is one of my favorite to work on, that pass through behind the mid galley is sooo helpful and passengers loooove those seats!
Yeah, the mid galley thing was cool - I assume that’s used as a self serve snack bar on long haul flights?
You got it. And on the premium transcon I try to keep it stocked with those smaller water bottles (and snacks once they come back from covid isolation).
@@sanspotter Yeah, flew LAX-SYD recently and they put water bottles, juices, snacks (chips, mini ham sandwiches, etc). Decent.
Scott, I've been a fan for awhile. I find your flying experiences informational and very funny. I flew 777-300er Newark to Rome back in Oct 2022. I was told, once I flew Polaris I'd never go back to coach. I'm flying
to Sydney, Australia next April from Newark again. This time flying Polaris on 787-10 Newark to San Francisco. Then San Francisco to Sydney on a 777-300er. I love that my 15.5hr will be on a plane that I'm familiar with.
Maybe I'll even get some pajamas. Thanks again for all that you do. I look forward to all your reviews
I flew on their 777-200ER Polaris business class from EWR-SFO. One of my best flight experiences. As an added bonus, I asked to see the flight deck before the flight (I usually try to wait till after), and they said the pilots were busy so I returned to my seat. 2-3 minutes later, another flight attendant came to me and asked if I had asked to see the flight deck, because it was open now. Captain was incredibly nice, and he saw everyone off the aircraft too at we were getting off and personally wished me good luck in school and thanked me for coming up. That the crew went out of their way to do that for me, I’ll always remember that.
That’s really cool! Not many cabin crews will accommodate cockpit visits these days, so you definitely got lucky.
@@sanspotter I’ve been fortunate in being able to visit several flight decks - 737, the max, 757, 777, a320, and a350, but the United 777 one stood out because the crew went out of their way to invite me and let me do that. In my experience they’re often accommodating during deboarding - often less so before pushback because it’s really busy then. But often pilots turn off the instruments before opening the flight deck after arrival so there’s challenges to both before and after the flight.
I was on that same route last weekend. Was traveling as a non rev passenger listed for business class. They also are now serving an ice cream sundae on their Transcon flights so I really enjoyed that.
That's actually so crazy, I have a flight from ORD-SFO on a 777-300ER in Polaris next week, the timing on this video is just insane. Only difference with my flight is my destination is SFO, my home. Flying to ORD on the 15th, back to SFO on the 16th purely to experience United 777-300ER Polaris.
Yeah, that is really good timing! 😆 I can pretty much guarantee that you’re going to enjoy it. Hopefully you’ll get noise canceling headphones on your flights - I’m not sure why they didn’t hand them out for this one.
Watch them switch the aircraft 😂😂
@@Velocity8842 I will cry if they swap it for a 737

@@sanspotter Update! Writing this as i'm on the plane in the seat, I got no headphones. It's really nice though! I flew during lunch service and had your favorite combo, chicken and rice. Plus bread roll/butter, fresh fruit, and a chocolate lava cookie. Awesome product for such a short flight.
I did Polaris from Newark to Taipei, two legs with a stopover in San Francisco. My original flight was canceled, and I received an upgrade. It was a great experience to spend 19 hours on a plane, though the desert was a bit off.
I recommend Polaris for the super long-haul flights lasting over 12 hours or a red-eye flight. For business class on a domestic route, sit in economy.
I was on N2250U last week from SYD to SFO in about the same seat. Had the same issue with the shoulder strap. Been flying in these 77W with United since the first flight operated between SFO and NRT back in 2018 or so. I have 4 more long haul flights in Polaris in the next 2 weeks. I really do love Polaris.
Scott, I honestly think your aviation vids are the best on youtube. I love your editing, sense of humor, and your videos don't overstay their welcome, so to speak. Can't wait until you can fly internationally again and get some more of that chicken rice!
Thanks Jason! I’m looking forward to going international again too. I’ve been holding back since the whole Covid testing thing seems really confusing and stressful (and there are so many neat airline experiences to try here at home) but…I’m getting the itch. Maybe sometime this spring…
Agree with you Jason, never boring always a laugh along with an honest review👍
Scott, you are so funny! This is totally something I would do. Fly out of my way for four hours to fly on a 777-300ER! I am flying United to Cabo in May for the first time in many years so I’m excited to see how they’ve improved. I always fly American but haven’t been super impressed lately. Thanks for another hilarious video! I always get so excited when I see a new upload from Sanspotter!❤️👍✈️
I’m glad to be the provider of (dorky) entertainment! 😆 And yeah, you might be surprised with how well United has been turning the ship around recently. They’re not perfect, but they keep getting better. 👍🏻
My name is Jayden Lo
Taking this exact flight in two weeks, in biz class! Thanks for sharing.
Amazing video Scott!
Thanks Ryan!
Great Video as always 👍🏼
Thanks Marc!
Scott… love all your videos! Being from Hawaii, Hawaiian Air got me locked in with their frequent flyer. I saw your reviews on them and how you like the food. To me, the first class food was way better years ago. Their lie flat and coach seating cannot compare to UA! (Constant tailbone pain). I recently took a SFO-HNL on a 300er and was amazed! Booked as domestic first but had the pillow and blanket, no amenity kits. A+++. The seats are a little narrow for me being 6’1, but they are super comfortable. I just came home today and tried their premium economy plus.. 2-4-2. It was considered a normal economy plus upgrade being a HNL-SFO. Seats equivalent to narrow body first class. Awesome legroom. It was the first row behind the Polaris seats. If you cannot afford Polaris, the first 3 rows are the best bet! I should start doing Hawaiian reviews as I fly them once a month. Keep up the great work!
LOVED your review! You are providing a very informative and funny review with quality editing! Liked and subbed, I think your videos are going to be my guide to flying in the U.S when I visit sometime in the future! Again, my deepest thanks for providing a great review to a fellow aviation lover! 😊
Wish we could have more footage and descriptions about the food.
I think I’ve just become jaded with UA breakfast options these days. I’ve had a lot of those eggs (and waffles) over the last 6 months! 🤢
So, the remote was germ infested, but the touch screen IFE was sanitized?
At least the screen wasn’t as sticky as the remote was! 🦠
@@sanspotter ewwwwwww
Absolutely! My favorite UAL Fleet!
Your little breaks in between with the clips of i.e. “Necrotizing Fasciitis” reminds me of Adult Swim bumps 😂
I'm telling you, the waffles are better than the eggs! They are amazing!
I JUST flew Polaris SFO-EWR yesterday on the 77W. Since this is their flagship route you get the amenity kit, pillows and blankets! I had the exact same breakfast as you, it was so good
Sounds nice! I’m actually surprised they don’t consider ORD-SFO to be a premium route - blankets and pillows would have taken this experience to an entirely different level!
I was able to fly business from EWR to LAX on their 787-9. I did have pillows and a blanket for my flight. For the service...well I'm not sure what to say about it lol. I felt that it wasn't great. It wasn't terrible. It could have been better. For the seat, I sat in 7L and I did like how comfortable my seat was, but I'm 5'2 so I had plenty of space and privacy. Although I will say that my seat/space was not very cleaned. I found food crumbs and debris... the good thing I always bring wipes to clean but still. 🤷♀️
I only fly United to keep my 1k status.
In may when I hit 1k. Will change back to SQ. $4k cheaper in J. Much better service and seats
What a great flight experience.
Its a good product.
Keep it up.
Thanks Meeran!
@@sanspotter You are welcome.
got to fly on this plane from SFO to HNL. Even though it was united first and not a true polaris experience, still got the best sleep I ever had on a plane. The seat is super comfy!
Waffles or eggs - same dilemma ! I too went for my Denver styled scrambled eggs
Thanks for the video. Do you think blankets/pillows, amenity kits, and full meal services will come back anytime soon for the non-premium domestic Polaris US routes?
Seats are great, still a long way to improve on their food offering
I flew from HNL-SFO Polaris Business Class! It was awesome!!!
I’m actually doing that exact same thing soon. Looking forward to it!
Just flew Polaris round trip from EWR-SFO very nice
It’s definitely hard to beat UA these days. Glad you had a good trip!

Excellent trip report. I'd do the same as you too :) Flying for 4 hours on a 773 in Polaris is awesome!

I can't wait for flying on UA 777-300ER Polaris from TPE to SFO in June (fingercross that EVA Air does not cancel my flight from SGN to TPE). I already had a great experience on 787-9 Polaris flying from SFO to ICN earlier this month.
Before I even watch your video the answer is already "YES!" Polaris Business is great.
Looking forward to trying this product for EWR to LAX and ORD to DEN and SFO all upcoming
Awesome video Scott! I'm flying United to France later this month, and on the return flight I'm flying on a 777-300ER to EWR 🤗
Sounds like fun! Enjoy the trip!
I always fly United and have the luck to be in the first class always. Last July from SFO to NRT all the way to Guam we’re in the first class as well as going back. Their food and wine was great. I can fly AA too because my husband was retired in AA but our priority for first class is up to Japan only. I have to get a connection flight of another Airlines going to Guam. On us that we travel on employee pass sometimes we’re lucky sometimes we’re not but most of the time we get the first class especially if it’s not in peak season.
I’m going on a 787-9 next month from phx to Maui and it’s a 6 hour flight, can’t wait to see the business class
My dad is from Chicago love it
Chicago is a cool city. 😎👍🏻
Nice review Scott and solid route planning to pick up a 773. Especially into SFO. No lounge access tho? Not carrying a @united Mileage Plus visa? You should remedy that. And I'm not compensated for that plug lol.
Spectacular wing and engine views!! What a beast of a plane!
Terminal G at SFO isn't that intl Terminal north end? This Terminal is lovely always enjoy visiting
Check my lame videos for my last SFO departure on a 787-10...
Safe travels!!
I’m excited for quarantine free travel to go see my parents in Korea at the end of this month. Business class here I come. This is Polaris business class is a good seat. The Polaris lounges make it even better. That’s the deal breaker. For the record I would do it just to be able to snag a premium economy seat,
Hey Mate.. just a quick question.. I will be flying Business class EWR to Zurich soon.. United Polaris Boeing 767-300...The only seats available are 1L and 15A, 15L, 17A, 17L.. since i do not have any options left, what would you recommended the seat I pick? would 1L be better for privacy with window or too close to bathroom.?? or the 15 or 17 A would be better? Much appreciated!!
I would recommend to everyone bring your own headphones,I pack them for all flights.
The triple 7 is my favorate plane in UAs fleet. It is worth the connection in SFO
I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking that a connection was better than the nonstop. 😆👍🏻
@@sanspotter maybe not for the bank account though😂😂
DEN-HNL, LAX-HNL, SFO-HNL and ORD_HNL all run the 777-200's (non ER) with the antiquated 8 across business seating with rear facing seats. So of course United takes a Polaris 773 from ORD-SFO, a quick 4 hour hop vs the 9 1/2 hours it takes to do DEN-HNL. Makes perfect sense! I'm mostly happy with United but their decisions sometimes leave me befuddled.
Exactly! Why not just have one consistent product? Who wins here?
They’ll eventually get to the point where it’s a consistent business class product on all aircraft (it just takes time). I’m actually booked on a 777-200 HNL-SFO coming up soon that will have the newest Polaris cabin (1-2-1 configuration).
They used to run the 777-200 8 across from HNL-GUM. 7 1/2 hours in that business class while having to look at the rear facing passengers while you're facing forward was a really weird experience.
Next time you're in Chicago, you definitely need to check out the Field Museum.
You definitely made the right decision Scott. My only experience of lie flat business in United was to London many years ago. Middle row, four person across if I remember right, uncomfortably aware of my neighbor for the entire 8 hours, I lay looking at the ceiling in a slightly inebriated haze from the red wine not able to sleep and not really sure what to do. The 8.48 from ORD is calling me.
Haha, I remember those seats well - I had one of those middle seats once on a flight from HKG to ORD and it was extremely awkward. 😅
I've switched most of my business over to UA from AA in the last couple years. They have really been stepping up their game while AA has been stagnant at best with their onboard product, especially on domestic routes. They status matched me to Global Services so it was really a no brainer.
Nice to get an instant bump to Global Services! That makes a huge difference. 😎👍🏻
@@sanspotter Yep indeed it was. I just had to provide my travel spend / AAdvantage activity on AA and they took care of it.
@@sanspotter questions since the plane ✈️ landed at an international gate. Do you have to go thru customs?
The food is a joke. Looks like a frozen TV dinner.
The Field Museum!
I’ve always wanted to check it out!
I literally find myself wresting between the 737 direct and 777 via SFO to do ORD-SAN all the time.
I've got Polaris NRT-EWR-NRT booked with my wife later this year and can't wait to try it out!
“You would be crazy to fly nonstop from Chicago to San Diego on the 737”….here I am…flying San Diego to Chicago next week…on a United 737 in economy.
@Redpants I can pretty much guarantee that you’re going to enjoy the heck out of that!
@AS Aviation RIP 😄
I have flown Polaris business class from LAX to Milan in 2018. Can’t remember which Milan airport. Flew into one, flew out of the other. It was a nice experience for us.
That’s a long route to enjoy Polaris on! After this short hop from ORD to SFO I’m definitely more open to the idea of flying United long haul.
@@sanspotter You fly everywhere! I’m sure you’ll experience it soon enough. With recent price hikes, I’m relegated to premium economy going forward. I’m blessed I can still afford to travel 🙏🏻
I am from SD, I connect either SF or LAX! No problem at all?🙏❤️🤗
Thanks for the report. We just went to New Zealand and back on United's 777 business class. It was OK, but quite honestly it didn't feel any better than the competition. Personally I dislike these new configurations where the majority of business class seats are angled in order to squeeze more seats into the space. Cabin staff were only 5 out of 10 as expected: the pleasant nature that used to be required of cabin staff in business and first seems to have disappeared.
I had the waffles...I was disappointed that I didn’t get MCDonalds at the airport
Have you ever tried booking tickets using your VPN? Its a thing here over the pond, that if you select a relatively developing country to work from, you can save quite a bit of air fares.
Yeah, it doesn’t always work out, but every now and then I’m able to find really good deals by simply changing my location. 👍🏻
Dude!! I need those shoes lol get them from a store or online?
Just cause I'm curious. Does Surfshark pay for all your expenses during traveling for a tripreport?
Good question! No, they don’t pay for the expenses directly, but I do use the money they pay me to help offset the costs of my trip.

Nice to see US airlines such as United improving their business class products!!!
I recently took this flight and had a very similar experience to you. I too experienced no noise canceling headphone out of ORD. The return SFO to ORD (on a 777-300) did have the noise canceling headphones. Maybe it a thing out of Chicago?
Yes and no depending on the circumstances. If I have a chance and to pay low, I would surely do, but otherwise no. Once again, JBM, and an excellent video.
Thanks Sergio! It’s definitely worth it if it’s equal in price to other (lesser) itineraries.
Lax-Hnl 777-300er last month
Going to fly United Polaris from ORD to HNL in April on a 777 which is also sold as domestic first class. Not having lounge access along with a slightly lesser service in the air is kind of a kick in the nuts. Tickets weren't exactly cheap, either. Will still enjoy it but Delta wins this one as we will have lounge access on our way back flying business class through them. Shame on United. Not sure why they split their product like that. Weird.
Yeah, the lack of lounge access is a bummer for sure. I mean…a kick in the nuts. 😄
I'm going to be flying to Guam from Hawaii. It's an 8-hour flight. I was wondering if I should pay the $400 to upgrade to Polaris for that flight or stay in Premium Plus?
Pay the extra to go to Asia trust me
Dude, you gotta try PAL JFK-MNL because the A350's at PAL r vanishing. And bro, doesn't the old livery give u a Continental Airlines feel?
Yeah, I still think of continental airlines whenever I see a United Aircraft in this livery. 💭😢 But yeah, I do hope to try the PAL A350 before they are gone. Hopefully Asia will open back up soon…
But how much did u pay for the upgrade?
It was paid first class, and nearly the exact same price as it would have been on non-lie flat equipped aircraft. A pretty good deal IMHO!
@@sanspotter does Surfshark block or temporary disconnect Wifi connections? I just subscribed and now my home wifi on my apple products goes up and down for some reason.
I just flew AA 777-300 from Del-JFK and found the hard product to be less jazzy but more comfortable- specially for sleeping. Broad leg space along with no tv on top had plenty of room to move around.
I’ve eaten those eggs several times on transcon flights and found them bland as hell. That you found them spicy may be another sign you’re getting old. :-)
Also, the “G” gates are in the international terminal, not Terminal 3.
Polaris 1st class or not, any opportunity to fly on a 777 300er is worth it. That is one bad ass machine!
I agree. It’s a unit!
I can't believe there weren't any headphones! Must've been a miscater. I've always had them on LF domestic. In fact I don't even know if you can use regular earbuds...
Yeah I also think it was a mistake on their part, as all of my most recent domestic Polaris flights had them. I always carry a set of earbuds with me for situations exactly like this, and they sorta worked. It wasn’t great. 😅
I'm not from the USA 😆 not even close but I still enjoy your content as an aviation enthusiast, looking forward to flying again over here in India, the unlock took a longer time than most places.
Also to keep things interesting, might want to stopover at PHX or SLC instead of LAX or SFO.
Haha, yeah, I do need to start visiting other airports. Anyway, hopefully you can get back to flying again soon! Things do seem to be getting better almost everywhere…
@@sanspotter Thanks! I am actually going (for the first time in two years) up to Delhi by plane. Really looking forward to it.

It’s definitely worth trying 👍🏻
Yes…….. I would because it’s FREE !
The G gates at SFO aren't part of Terminal 3
Really? What terminal is it a part of then? I always thought it was T3.
@@sanspotter as a native bay arean, the A and G gates have always been part of the "international" terminal and theyre connected by the large departures hall that spans the roads leading into the airport. there is an airside connection between terminal 3 and G, presumably to aid passengers connecting on united/star alliance flights. united domestic flights do occasionally depart/arrive at the G gates, seemingly for no reason. sometimes the aircraft will continue onto an international service from there but i have noticed on tracking apps that sometimes united widebodies will park there especially overnight before heading off on another international route. IAD seems to be the largest example of this

Yeah, for some reason or another it’s hard for me to time premium flights on United that aren’t in the morning. I’ve had far too many United first class breakfasts over the past six months. 😵 Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yes, I would fly a 777 in first class
Not many people would say such a thing 10 years ago. They’ve definitely turned things around.
United has historically done my family dirty by losing their luggage internationally multiple times, and leaving me stuck on the SFO tarmac for over 2 hours coming back from London Heathrow, so I've not booked them for over a decade now ... that said the Polaris seats do look really nice! Maybe if I see a competitive price and know I'm traveling with only carry-ons domestically I'll reconsider them 😅
Yeah, I like Polaris and all, but I don’t think I’m quite ready to choose it over the flag carrier of the country I’m flying to internationally. The seat is only part of the equation - because there ain’t no way the service on UA competes with Middle Eastern or Asian airlines. 😄 I do recommend trying it though!
@@sanspotter i'm desperately trying to find an excuse to fly Singapore Airlines again just for the amazing experience 😜
