What was the most memorable part of Vandal Hearts II to you?

For my first playthrough it would be Adeles suicide. It was quit a shock to have lost Leif, killed Yuri and have to helplessly watch Adele jumping off.
storywise? won´t spoil for those who need to experience it for themselves. but the dual turn system took me a while. loved it! just figuring out who moves when and exploit it and all the extra hidden stuff \o/
The most memorable part for me was the first battle. I was so excited to play the sequel because I loved the first game , then I realized they RUINED the combat system exactly as you described. What a let down of a game..... How you could post this title when you admit yourself it's not as good as the first game....?
@@kyletaylor4312 I disagree with that part, the battle system made it more tactical and was the best part of VH2. What held it back was the predictable AI (even in advanced mode)
For me there is no better game to this day.
@@kyletaylor4312 Going to echo this. I didn't play past the first few stages due to the wonky combat mechanics.
This game is the reason I'm into tactical games today, one of my top favorites!
Also i really loved that you never know who moves first in this game, basically you have to look at who is faster and predict. And of course simultaneous moves are more exciting, enemy might escape and inflict damage on the other character.
As a superfan of vandal hearts 2 (I actually am in the middle of my second playthrough, of which just a couple hours ago I 100%ed the item find! Going for the best ending too. Got the crummy mayor one first time around.) I really appreciate this video.
The dual-turn system of Vandal Hearts 2 was IMO way ahead of its time. I totally loved the dual-turn system. I completely disagree with what most people say that the dual-turn system made battles unpredictable. No, the real fun in Vandal Hearts 2 was to arrange your movements and formations in a way that baits your opponents to move exactly the way you want them to move.
For example, you make one of your units show their back (weak spot) to an enemy, and when the enemy attempts to attack that weak spot, you move a heavyweight ally into that spot. Because weight is the factor that will determine space priority, you shove the enemy aside, wasting their turn, and then exposing them to further attacks. Or one other example, you move in an ally to bait an enemy spellcaster. The spellcaster moves in to cast the spell, allowing one of your units with high speed to then move in to smack and kill him before he casts the spell.
If there's one criticism I have for the game, it's that it is complex and nuanced, but the game does a horrible job of creating starting "tutorial" levels that will illustrate or explain all this nuance to the player. That's why many drop out of the game before they learn it enough to have fun with it.
I hope some other game developer takes this concept and does a better job of handling it. The way Konami is now, we'd sooner see a Vandal Hearts pachinko machine than an actual Vandal Hearts game.
What I liked best about this game was that your armour was visually represented in battles and cutscenes. I always left Joshua in leather armour because I thought that was the right look for him, going for looks over practicality, and it wasn't so bad either once you get the hang on how to bait the AI and attack them where you predict they will go.
The blood spurt deaths are really satisfying too.
Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games. I loved them, the newer offerings in the series haven't grabbed me in the same way sadly.
This just landed in my reccs. I know I'm late, but I like the video! Nice and concise.
I must say, it always saddens me a bit to see how many people dislike the combat system. Of the handful of people that remember the game to begin with, haha. Not that I'm chastising anyone for it, mind. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. It's just, I completely fell in love with it from minute 1. In fact, I loved it so much, I replayed the entire game (and it's not a short one) from start to finish a mere week after my first run's end - I can count the number of games for which I've done this with the fingers of one hand. Part of it is that I felt I hadn't scratched the surface when it came to secrets, but had I not enjoyed the combat as much as I did, I wouldn't have bothered.
The AI may seem unpredictable at first, but there are a number of tricks, such as enemies prioritizing attacking your units' backs, or spellcasters preferring to move first. Once it starts clicking, it's an incredibly fun system with zero downtime that forces you to keep thinking and stay one step ahead of the enemy without needing to be outrageously challenging. Nothing quite so satisfying as successfully baiting an enemy to attack one of your units, only to circle around with that same unit and strike their would-be attacker in the back instead!
Plus, credit must be given to the QoL. SRPGs of this age tend to be a bit annoying to play because they are severely lacking in QoL. And yet here's this game, allowing you to manually modify your starting formation, check enemies' movement and effective attack ranges, showing all the equipment on the character sprite, number of deaths for each character - including notable enemies, which I thought was a nice touch... Features that other SRPG series (read, Fire Emblem) would take years to implement.
All in all, one of my favorite strategy games out there. A one-of-a-kind gem, this. Such a shame they didn't get the chance to polish and perfect this battle system in future installments, and instead the series died an inglorious death with the very next game. Ah, well.
Thanks for all of your thoughts on this!
Same here. VH II is the first tactial RPG I´ve every played and it has ruined every other game of the same kind of genre for me. I was 12 years old, when first time playing this game, really loved it and was severely disappointed after trying to play Tactics Ogre since the enemies don´t move when you do. Even the old Fire Emblem games can´t seem to compare.
@@Asmodea01 A fellow VHII fan, out on the wild? I must be dreaming.
Interesting to hear your experience with the game! I was almost twice that age when I first played the game, and it didn't quite ruin the genre for me (I'm still a big FE fan haha), but it definitely holds a place in my heart. From the one-of-a-kind battle system to the massive amount of obscure secrets hiding under the surface, this game was quite the experience.
Who's your favorite character? Mine's got to be Pike. I love how silly he looks and his lines are hilarious.
Only played I and III. III was forgettable enough but the first one was a very special game.
At the time, 2 was like 1 with a couple of new ideas and was pretty good. A lot of people don't like the system where the opponent moves at the same time, but if you have a mind for strategy it becomes very fun predicting the computer's movements and exploiting the system.
Back then it was not at all a bad idea and my circle of friends thought it was cool. Today people act like it ruins the game and those people are, well, subjectively incorrect lol
I suspect most of those people would struggle to beat the original FFT without a guide lol
VH2 was great, the battle system def could have been improved especially if done now. With looking back i dont know if I beat it more than once, I remember VH1 and its ending well. The thing i like as an idea with that battle system is that it kinda gives alittle bit of realism as your plans WONT go your way 100% of the time in battle. If anyone else did a form of this battle system sadly i dont know but would love to know them! Best tactical RPG? I cant give it that, but as you stated its darker story is what drew me in.
Has anyone played fell seal arbiters mark? I liked that one. Looking for more similar games to vandal hearts 2, where you can actually switch weapons and use magic, fly...
Vandal hearts was a dope game. It reminds me of Ogre Battle 64 as far as maturity, and OB64 is by far one of my top games of all time.
I especially liked the first VH. What I remember about this one was the deep dark storyline.
There's a mod that change the dual turn system for a traditional Fire Emblem system. You move your characters then the AI.
Thank you for mentioning this. I need it. I really want to beat this game as I love the story, but I am not a fan of the battle system. It just wasn't for me.
@@PS1Fan1991 You're welcome
@@PS1Fan1991 Though, you'll have to start from the beginning.
@@loudradialem5233 True. I will say though that I do love the story enough to start again.
The most memorable thing I have about this game was what happened about a month or two after its release. I already got the game as I mostly get games at launch, but I noticed a month or two later that my local gamestop no longer had the game in stock. When I asked what happened they looked into their database and noticed the game was no longer in their system and when I saw the manager later he told me that they were told to pull all copies from the shelves and sent them back as they were no longer going to sell it. He didn't know why.
I never really watched this channel til recently but now that I am watching it, I am quite enjoying these reviews of RPGs... My favorite gaming subject! Keep up the good work!
I don't really get your argument against the dual turn system. To me, the whole point of this battle system is that instead of trying to predict what the whole enemy team will do during a turn, you have to predict which unit the AI will use and what it will do. The AI uses mainly deterministic rules to decide which unit it will move and who this unit will attack. Some of these rules are even listed in the game manual. It only relies on randomness when you give the AI multiple options with the same level of priority to attack you.
You also get that feeling of having the AI being your puppet when you play perfectly, especially when you start to play with the conflict resolution system of the game. For example, when the two units try to go on the same tile at the same time, the unit with more weight wins and pushes the other one on an adjacent tile. You feel like a chessmaster the first time you bait an enemy unit with one of your wounded one just to move a heavy unit at the same time, push the enemy unit on the side interrupting its attack and hitting it on top.
I too didn't have a problem with the dual turn system. For myself, I looked at it and found it unique and even a bit challenging which made me like it the first time I played it :)
This game straight floored me as a kid and I still hold it as a high water mark for RPG story. (spoilers) The way your separated from your friends as a kid and the circumstances you meet them in as an adult, knowing all the weight that you're each carrying into the encounter. How you meet your old crush but your unable to do anything but act within your stations was heart breaking, how you meet your old best friends and the war has reduced them to prostitution and then they give you shit for saying they should have done better, just everything, the story is so good. The simultaneous movement was amazing too how you learn to predict their movement and set them up in traps where they'll lose their actions is far more strategic than "I move you move." My only complaint is a fault with the genre itself, I dont want to spend that many hours in battles to experience the story again. Maybe there are rom hacks that will help i dunno.
Terrain and distance plays a role in tactics
Me with a throwing coffin: let me introduce myself
I love this game's story. Played it several times to get the vandal heart sword. I never thought that you need to search the maps for secrets. Which was cool, I had to spare one enemy and have him attack a character that I place close to it. They always attack the back, so it is predictable.
I realized ages ago VH2 would be the hill I die on regarding its synchronous turn-based system. Never realized what the fuss was about - you just "waste" one turn to realize who's paired up with whom. Actual crippling flaw of the combat is enemy AI will always, always go for a back attack on their target. So much so you can reliably work around this and only casters beyond your reach become a problem. Also, I only now realize VH2 actually showed what gear characters wear which is a mind-blowing QoL feature versus going into menus to inspect every unit.
one of my top memorial games. I still play it and Front Mission 3 and 4!
Right on, great to hear others still enjoy this one.
@@Xygor any recommendation of similar games?
I don't agree at all on your take on the dual move system. I love it!
It made the game so much more tactical. Once you understood the ground rules (CPU will attack weak targets first, preferably from the back) you could place decoy and then send a heavy unit on the place, the CPU would attack, so your heavy unit will shove the enemy away and grant you a free hit. If you miscalculated, you were hitting cold air, but that what made the thinking so fun. I'm so spoiled by this system, I could never play another Turn-by-Turn-SRPGs again....
Glad that you liked it!
I agree with you. It’s so much more interesting than everyone moves and you wait for the enemy to move everyone. It’s like going from turn based to real time fights in conventional rpgs. And same I’m not interested in any other “tactics” games that don’t do this. If there’s another like vh2 I’ll check it out.
What would be awesome is a pvp version of this battle system. It’s satisfying to hop to a blank space and set your character to attack air and watch your opponent walk right into your prediction, now imagine doing that to a real person?
I'm playing through the first Vandal Hearts since the 90s. I got thinking of the 2nd game and was lead to your video. I remember not really liking the 2nd game all that much and never finished it. But I want to give it a fair shake once I'm done with the first game again.
Good video got another trpg I need to play. Should I start with 1 or just jump into 2?
The character portraits remind me of Clock Tower, but probably it is just me. Thanks for the review, I played the first one but never finished it, I should definitely come back to it and give this one a try.
You can totally make the right choices with the dual movement system. I don't remember how it works now, but I had it all figured out. I could figure out every move (or at least pretty close) that the enemy would make. You have to know all the ranges of attacks on the field and the enemy's preference for magic/ranged attacks... I think if you leave a character with their back open you could get the enemy to go to the spot at your ally's back, but you'd move that ally at the same time or have someone there waiting for him when he got there, or something like that... I remember having to spend a LOT of time thinking out the long complex battles in this game.
It's not at all unpredictable once you have the system down though.
I've been turned off by exactly what you're talking about on attempted replays though since I forgot the ins and outs though, so I get it.
Yeah, a winning strategy also is to always target an enemy which had his turn very recently, so you'd know he wouldn't dodge your attack by moving out of the way.
My opinion of this is about the same as everyone else's.
I hate the battle system, but the story is great and having your equipment change on the character sprites is awesome as well.
The music/looks/combat definitely I feel nostalgic about. What I think of the most though is the story, it was dark, and kind of tragic. Specifically thinking of Godard converting people (Jacob in particular), and also the Nicola storyline.
How T.F... You remember the story?? Facts you did not play it 21 years ago like me lol. If so wtffff amazing.
@@davidhvacddc I had to google the names of those two. I only remembered those two bits haha. I did play it back then however. Actually I had forgotten about the combat system until this video.
Yah as I thought. On another note there's a new game called triangle coming out soon. Looks like a real FFT. Might want to check it out.
@@davidhvacddc Yeah I'm pretty pumped for that one.
I hated the dual movement system. It felt chaotic and made planning set-ups feel way too random.
On the hand, the original was what got me into turn based rpgs. I loved the story and battle mechanics.
you guys dont know how much it means to me that many of you guys are exposed to my favorite game, this! One of the best story i have experienced,
The story in this game was great, it's the sole reason I beat the game. The battle system was frustrating but tolerable, thanks to the story.
To me, Vandal Hearts II has the greatest story that I have ever seen in an RPG, but I wasn't a fan of the battle system. I finished chapter 1 and stopped playing because I needed a break from the battle system, but I want to get back into it because the story is just so good.
There's a patch to remove the dual movement system if you like
@manny022 Those features annoyed me too, but the dual movement frustrated me the most.
@@armorvil I play on my PS1. Would I need to play it on an emulator?
@@PS1Fan1991 Not necessarily. If your ps1 was modified to be able to play back up cd, you could burn the iso on a cd and play it on your ps1.
@@armorvil I think that it can.
I just found out about vandal hearts like a week and a half ago and now I catch this vid talking about it, this game is calling out to me I tells YA!
0:56 Wow I honestly didn't notice the blood on the cover until now!
It will be very amazing if hollywood adapt this game to be a movie cinematic.
It would DEFINITELY be crap, like all movies based on games.
I’m a fan of tactical RPGs, worked at a game store during PSone era, was a game journalist for 8 years…
And I never played this or its predecessor. 😔
Back in the 90s when "swap shops" were kinda common it was hard to find certain titles. When I first fell in love with rpgs (after playing mystic quest and secret of mana) I got to play quite a few on snes and ps1 but so many eluded me sadly, and some were actually released in the UK too i think so not all were jp only. Here's what I played and what I wished I had played....
PLAYED:
Wild Arms
Mystic Quest
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Zelda: Minnish Cap
Sword of Mana
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Terranigma
Illusion of Gaea
Alundra
Breath of Fire 3 and 4
Chrono Trigger
Legend of Dragoon
Legend of Legaia
FF 1-9
YS Ark of Napishtim
NEVER PLAYED:
Wild Arms 2
Breath of Fire 1 and 2
Xenogears
Xenosaga
Chrono Cross
Lunar
Lufia
Star Ocean
Golden Sun 1
Golden Sun 2
Soulblazer
Earthbound
Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Eternia
Super Mario RPG
Bahamut Lagoon
Romancing Saga
All Ys games before Napishtim (played Celceta and Origins on Ps4 recently though thankfully)
All Dragon Quest games before 8 (played 4-6 on DD thankfully)
It would be interesting to know which on the second list were released in the UK and why I never saw them
Man, I loved VH1 and 2. So glad to see it here.
I'm a huge fan of TRPGs, and this series has been on my list for a while. I've just never been a Playstation guy so I've missed out on nearly all the PS tactical RPGs. I did pick up a PSP purely for FFT, which is an amazing game and I have the PC port of the original Disgaea, though. Anyway, I suppose I'll have hit up my local vintage game shops and at least start working on acquiring a PS1.
Vandal Hearts 2 is a game I wish I could have loved. The first one was wonderful. A great story, a great character design, unique maps, awesome classes. But 2. Is atrocious. Maybe it's my brain but it took so much work to keep my units from harm. I had to lure the enemies to move to my back and my character to avoid it by taking 2 steps back and attacking air. Suddenly, the opponent will walk into that unoccupied air. I would love to try it again. But I psyke myself out. I'll just watch a let's play.
I live in Japan and have a ps2 so I’ll have to keep an eye out for this game and pick it up!
I remember being really young, so I was really disappointed when none of the original characters had returned. a few years later I came to appreciate it.
I won't lie. I bought this game just because of that absolutely gorgeous freaking cover art. But, I'm glad it's also a pretty good tactical RPG to boot.
I love Vandal Hearts 2! But to me there is nothing like wandering around the map ina tactical like Shining Force 2!
For me it was one of the best and hardest SRPGs.
I only played the first, and it was pretty popular amongst my small group of friends. I never played VH2, and I didn't even know there was a third game, until I read someone's comment here.
I've tried to play Final Fantasy Tactics a few times over the years, but the boring grind for Abilities (and the disappointing difficulty that followed) kept me from getting far. I tended to like the FFT handheld games better, but I probably got the furthest in Vandal Hearts 1, because the game kept pushing you forward, and I think it had permadeath, which kept you invested in the characters.
War Song and the Shining Force series (SF3 on the Sega Saturn was a personal favorite) are other great tactical games from that era, too.
Don’t know about Vandal Hearts but Dual wielding is well handled in Divinity Original Sin 2.
Hope you’ll check out Edge Of Eternity. It’s already out on PC and comes out consoles next month. It’s an indie game but a very solid JRPG.
Combat Reminds me Of Grandia
There's an improvement hack to get rid of the simultaneous movement option. Might be worth checking out. Otherwise, I thought this game had one of the best stories and music scores of any game. It was practically Game of Thrones in terms of moral ambiguity, political intrigue, and fantasy-realism.
Interesting, I had no idea there was a hack to do that.
Loved Vandal Hearts when you could upgrade their classes, Liked VH II because anyone could be anything but that VH Class Change made for a better Story in my opinion, plus to watch on here that VH is a Sci-fi Story blew my mind, It seemed like VH was more RPG and Mythology then Sci-fi like VH was a Holy Sword the Vandaliers was a Holy Class ready for a Holy War against Demons and Beasts you know, Love them still though.
Just found this after starting the game with the turn taking hack/patch.
Came to check opinions on whether or not I should feel guilty about playing the game this way Vs playing as it's intended!
I do wonder though if unit weight has any other functions apart from pushing units off the same spot. If so, this hack would make the weight issue a moot point and therefore be cheating a bit.
Great video!
Usually, when I see a video like this I need to think for a few seconds to not get "Vandal Hearts" and "Vagrant Story" mixed up.
I "liked" VH2, kinda. The weird movement system seemed to make sense. I think my strategy was just to try and provoke the enemy into doing the exact move that I would expect them to do and countering. Also, I think I remember mages being overpowered. I don't know if it was that well-balanced in the end. I think the plot was a downer compared to the first. Granted, I didn't attempt to get the "good" ending.
I really liked VH1. It was straight and to-the-point with a lot of unit variation and mission variation. Cutscene. Battle. Upgrade unit class and equipment. Repeat. There's nothing wrong with that.
I am playing this game on the PSP, but with the patch that makes the combat use classic turns, way better.
I just like it because the main character's name is Joshua.
Could you do one for the most overlooked and underrated squaresoft game of all time, Vagrant Story
Epic game. I got right to the end and couldn't get materials to make the better gear and so I was doing one damage every hit. Hahaha
Is it really underrated? I remember everyone talking about how awesome it was when it came out. I gave it a try and couldn't really get into it though. Didn't play very long, so I should probably give it another whirl one day.
@@anonamatron I'd say it got overshadowed by other games due to it being somewhat different from the norm at the time.
It's still a solid title if you aren't worried about graphics or anything.
For me the first Vandal Hearts is still my favorite strategy RPG. maybe only the latest fire emblem might beat it. But I never could warm up with Vandal Hearts 2
I wanted to love this game, but you explained why i couldn't play this game in 2:55 . i found the gameplay to be frustratingly unpredictable making it unplayable. They should have just have it play out like FF tactics. A real pity. This could have been a classic.
Fair enough, thanks for leaving your thoughts on it!
This is my first and last strategy-RPG to this date. The main thing i hated about strategy-RPG is recruitment and this game doesn't have it so the characters available felt emphasized, not just another hollow soldier with same face and different name. Oh and i love weight system and dual movement, it add surprise moments and need careful planning. When everything is according to the plan, suddenly you'll feel like the smartest person in the world.
So... there are two ways to play with the combat system. You can either react to the AI, or you can learn the AI's priority system, predict it, and undermine it.
If you do the first, I can understand how the game could be frustrating. Attacking a space that an enemy has just vacated, being pushed out of the way by a heavier enemy, getting shot from high ground.
But if you do the second, if you can learn the AI... then you can use this to huge tactical advantage. You can get enemies to run into your attacks almost every turn. You can set up bait characters just within range of enemy attackers, so that they rush forward out of cover, only to simultaneously move your bait, and then hit them with thrown and bow weapon ambushes.
That's the way I think it was designed to be played.
Was about to say this but you pretty much covered it, using a bait character made combat so much easier to the point it felt like cheating. I pretty much used one tanky character as a bait while rest were ranged/high mobility units, only thing you had to pay attention was the enemy casters as they tend to try and nuke most grouped units instead going for the bait so some spreading on your ranged team was needed.
this game is breathtaking! But i'm cursed. All ISO files of this game were broken!
Nice video man
This game is the precursor for BG3
Why they never did a remake or a new tactics game is beyond belief. A Real tactics game. FF tactics, V-hearts etc.
There's tons of SRPGs out there! I have like five on the Switch that I bought and haven't even played yet.
this is a great tactical Vandal Hearts
Was not a fan of the dual system thus I did not beat either of the games but I liked the stories. Still waiting for a game synopsis on both games on youtube
Dual system? Do you mean when you act the enemy acts at the same time or something else?
If that is the case, though, the first Vandal Hearts didn't work like that.
@@SwagimirPutin yes thanks for reminding me. Still did not manage to beat the first got stuck somewhere :D Story was great for both games imho
Yeah I couldn't get into the simultaneous action system. I tried VH 1 and the intro of 2 after enjoying Suikoden Tactics. I feel spoiled by Suikoden Tactics as I love the Suikoden series, and it provided a very clean and simple experience with pretty deep and dynamic battle mechanics. Other games like FF Tactics seem too complicated with class changes and learning skills, and even your choices about birthday and whatnot affect stats from the start.
The dual moving system thing turned me off and was why I never got passed the beginning
I can’t wait till you cover breath of fire 3…..it’s such a good game you have to cover it in the future
Did anyone unlock the secret Vandalier class which turned your main character a God in comparison to the rest of your party...

Yes..
To me the best.. iTS Better than FF TATICS....
V.H 1 is incredible and a very good game... Good History, Loved the mechanics..
V.H 2 HAS A FAR BETTER HISTORY AND I LIKED THE CHANGE IN THE MECHANICS...
THE GAME USES ALL THE POWER OF THE PS1. THE GRAPHICS ARE "GOOD"..
THE HISTORY IS SO GOOD IS TRUE TO THE STORYLELLING OFF A CIVIL WAR IN A MEDIEVAL AGE WITH OTHER KINGDOMS MESSING AROUND...
NONE OFF THE ENDINGS WERE REAL HAPPY ENDINGS EVEN WHEN THE JOSHUA GROUP ENDS ALIVE.. YURI, CLIVE, JOSHUA AND ADELE... Joshua and Adele had no children... and it seems they didn't have time to be together...
THEY FACED TOO MUCH.. A TERRIBLE LIFE OF WAR AND FIGHTING ALL THE TIME.. THE CULTISTS MADE THE LIFE OFF THEM ALL IN LIVING HELL NO MATTER WHO.. NOBLES, THE SERFS THE PEOPLE IN GENERAL EVEN FOR THE BELIEVERS(CHURCH)....THEY DESTROYED EVERYTHING..
THE POLLATA VILLAGE WAS WIPED OUT.. MOST OFF THE COUNTRY AND CONTINENT WERE IN CHAMBLES.. SUCH A STRUGLE....
When the joshua friends dies its worse..
In 2000/2001 when i played this game i dont remeber exacly the year, but i got just two endings, the one that he becames the emperor(All his friends died) the worse ed.....He became unrecognizable..
So i tried again..
The other ending, the ones that he is at adele's grave, Clive and Rosaly appear and they talk.. then he goes to that hill and closes his eyes and imagines the two of them when they were children.. very sad..Looks like he turned into a wanderer in this one....ruclips.net/video/BVsU5GfQkJM/видео.html

VERY VERY VERY UNDERESTIMATE AND UNDERRATED GAME..
First time hearing this game
The system would have been fine if u could see the turn order
Agreed, VH2 is the best ~
I prefer VH1, but 2 is good too!
Super long game.and tough. Definitely separates the children from adults
Vandal Hearts is one of my favorite games of all time, but I could never get into Its simultaneous combat turn system. At least it's no """""Vandal Hearts""""" Flames of Judgment.
The most memorable part of Vandal Hearts 2? I do not remember the plot to this game at all. I do not even remember the names of any of the characters although when I hit play I am sure it will kick some cobwebs. All I remember is the pure anger I felt over how unrewarding the ending was. And I am not talking about the normal ending. I recall thinking the normal ending sucks. I am talking about the secret one that required finding items on certain tiles and shit. Getting some damn sword. All the extra work, some of it was pure dog crap too, and it did not change the ending in a happy or meaningful way. Like the developers were having a good ole laugh at me. Now to hit play.
The most memorable moment of the game for me is when Gilti gets drunk and tries to seduce Joshua, right before Joshua finds out his best friend married his sister and is whoring her out for money.
The dual turn system really negatively impacted the game. As did the graphical style. OG Vandal Hearts is a mustplay, but the sequel disappointed. Also due to the skill system.
Given the existence of FFT on the Playstation, I think the answer is "No."
The greatest tactical RPG on Playstation is certainly Tactics Ogre. If not the greatest game of the entire genre. And one of the greatest storylines in media.
Vandal Hearts 2 is a great game. Engaging storyline and well done atmosphere. However the battle system is broken.
I wish more games had a similar battle system (VH2)
Tactic ogre came out originaly on the snes.
Tactics Ogre is so boring.
final fantasy tactics is better in my opinion but tactics ogre does have a great story
VH2's system is not broken, you just don't understand it.
I can easily see how you'd reach that conclusion though.
It’s ok, but no where near the quality of Ogre or FFT
I favor the first
The best imo is fftactics
As a diehard Vandal Hearts 1, I hate this game. Although to be fair, I didn't give it much chance, playing it for 2-3 hours and done. I have no problem with the story, but i hate the battle system
The comment section alone should tell you why your title is pure hyperbole. I guess cluckbait works tho.
"Vandal Hearts II - The Greatest Tactical RPG on the PlayStation?" I hope this is just clickbait because I have lost all respect for you with this statement. This is one of the worst tactical RPGs I have ever players. The character portraits are ugly, the battle system simply isn't fun (you can eventually predict where the enemies will move most of the time) and slow, and the story is average. No thank you.
Presenting FFT as Square's version of Vandal Hearts is really, really misleading. Both games were drawing from the same source material: Tactics Ogre. FFT would have happened with or without Vandal Hearts existing.
I prefer Vandal Hearts 1
First one was way better
No, just no. The original was superior in every way. On playing the second one I was incredibly let down. Shining Force 2 is the greatest SRPG by the way, beating even the original Vandal Hearts. For strictly PlayStation though, yeah it has to be VH1.
tactics ogre and ogre battle much better
Nothing even comes close to this game.
Oof beyond the beyond. That freaking piece of overhard poorly designed garbage.
It’s not very good game.
This game sucked balls!!!!!!!!! The original was miles better
