    Great reaction! Most people who have reacted to this fail to notice that his music video is also a parody of the original. In fact, he copied it so close that Michael trained him on some of his dance moves and also let him use most of the dancers from his original video.

    There's an interview on RUclips of Eddie Van Halen talking about the guitar solo session. Eddie says he plugging in and started shredding to warm up and Michael Jackson said that's perfect we have the take. It was literally over before Eddie Van Halen started! Eddie did say he later did rearrange the rhythm riff behind the solo and Michael liked what he did with it. The whole session took 20 minutes and Eddie didn't even ask to be credited at the time even though it would have made him a huge ton of royalties when the song became the hit it was and the amount of albums Thriller sold.

      The solo in this song is provided by Rick Derringer, who was Weird Al's producer at the time, and a fine guitarist in his own right. That's not him in the video though of course.

    • @RareHarmony
      @RareHarmony 2 года назад +3

      To be clear, Richiec59 is talking about the original Michael Jackson recording, not the Weird Al parody. Eddie did walk away with two twelve packs of beer off the deal, as that was all he asked for.

    MJ was a HUGE Weird Al fan. Not only did he give Al permission to do his songs, but he also took him to the same locations so he could use them and the same actors/extras. AND he even took the time to teach Al the same dance moves, just to make the videos more authentic!

    Yes the original solo was performed by Eddie Van Halen. For the Parody, the solo was performed by the Album's producer, Rick Derringer. But here is the unquie thing, the guy that plays the guitar when it explodes is not Rick Derringer but band member Jim West. Jim West is a very talented guitarist and has won numerous awards for slack key guitar playing.

    7:08 The original solo in "Beat It" was done by Eddie Van Halen. Weird Al's "Eat It" solo was done by the song's producer, Rick Derringer, a rock legend. Derringer's first #1 hit ("Hang On Sloopy") was knocked off the top spot by the Beatles's "Michelle." But the Derringer song to react to is his '73 hit, "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Coo."

    Weird Al has been the king of parodies for decades. Just like this video is hilarious because you know the original song, they’re all much better if you’ve heard/seen the originals. My parents were the same as yours. I had to finish my food. They actually used to say “people in China were starving”. They weren’t being mean, The average person didn’t have a lot of knowledge about proper diet back then. So I’ve struggled with my weight since I got out of high school. Although you took the punishments as a youth, I think it worked out for you in the long run brother.

    Thank God someone gets the "other kids are starving in Japan" line. Maybe it bc we're both Gen X but it seems like nobody 35 and under even knows where that comes from. BTW, if anyone is curious my mom would say that anytime I would fuss about not wanting to eat something on my plate, and I heard a lot of other kids mom's say it too. It's my all time favorite Weird Al line.

    • @rhoetusochten4211
      @rhoetusochten4211 2 года назад +1

      At the end of WWII, starvation was a very real thing in Japan. The US had a major push to bring foodstuffs to the islands.
      Most likely, Al's parents (and those of that generation) were told "kids are starving in Japan, you should eat all your food and not complain" without irony.

    • @FURTHER_ADO
      @FURTHER_ADO 2 года назад

      @@rhoetusochten4211 yeah, I know the origin of it and my mom never said it ironically to me, why would she make "ironic" starving kids jokes to her 5 year old? In fact, this song is the only time I've heard it used jokingly. I'm not sure what the point of your comment is.

    Eddie Van Halen did the original guitar solo for Beat It. He had the black thriller jacket with the red accent. I had the all red beat it jacket but like you said it was the rip off one. You could always tell the rip off one because the shoulders had these sort of circle button things and the official one had the black and white mesh. (and his thriller jacket was the inverse colors.
