The EB/deadman system is a safety mechanism that verifies the driver's consciousness in operation.
A typical type of EB system is like a "watchdog timer". When the train is moving, a button needs to be hit at a certain interval e.g. every 30 seconds. If the time runs out and the button is still not pushed, a warning buzzer will sound, and the train will stop automatically if the button is not pushed in 5 seconds to cancel the alarm and reset the timeout. Sounding the horn or applying brakes can also reset the timeout. This type of system work quite similar to the SIFA device on German trains.
Some Japanese trains have switches on throttle/brake levers. The switch needs to be hold down all time when the train is running to prevent triggering the emergency brake.
The big yellow indicator above the clock is the door status light. When it lights up, all the doors are closed and the train is ready for departure.
Bell sounds are for signal-related safety warnings. When you hear a ding, check signal and speed!
On the top right corner of the left screen there are several rectangular green and amber indicators. The second indicator in the first row is overspeed warning, while the third indicator means the train is braking automatically because it's running too fast beyond the speed limit. The automatic brake is just an emergency safety mechanism and should not be relied on to achieve a correct speed when entering a station. If the overspeed light comes on, zero the throttle and apply some brakes gently!
When it comes to traffic lights, there's no doubt that "green is go, red is stop". If the signal shown includes a yellow light, it means that you're running too far ahead of schedule and need to follow some temporary speed limits to prevent collision with another train ahead. Green+Yellow = 70km/h limit, A single yellow light = 45km/h limit, Red+Yellow = 25km/h limit. For some newer lines using ATC signal systems, there are no traffic lights, and the speed limit is shown directly on the speedometer by an additional triangular needle.
