One thing I noticed with the steam engine… put a good amount of tonnage behind it. She will throw cinders out the stack if you work her really hard, and if you are just coasting or something. The cinders go away. They’re proportional to how work the engine is working and how much throttle you have. THAT is my favorite thing about the update, among the other massive changes and improvements.
@Hyce777 okay this scares me as if a taker is damaged they will leak downhill. If the loco can start fires? Best not run through any areas that have damaged cars X'D
Derail Valley is the closest I have gotten to my ideal train game. TrainZ with some scenarios lightly scratched that itch, but its multiplayer, asset problems, desyncs, crashes and lack of content were really holding it back. Derail Valley alone gives the industry fun and purpose to railroading, with the rolling stock, light finance and hands on fun, the Multiplayer mod puts it ahead of TrainZ due to better content, even with its short comings. If the devs land a proper coop MP, they are in a field where they have ZERO competitors and are an unique product!
@@naerbo19 Dunno about that, it isn't a free bolt on, but the mod has showed it is possible to do as they already have an internal client and server architecture which is really hard to do MP without (Minecraft is an example where they didn't and had to redo everything.) This is more akin to Euro Truck Simulator 2 bolting on multiplayer, still takes an effort but is doable.

Most other train simulators try and have realistic physics and modeling, like dovetail's train simulator series, but DV tries to simulate something I find much better, which is the actual job part of rail jobs where you have to do maintenance and contracts to save up enough money to get other trains and licenses
You sort of mentioned it in post, but the gearboxes act like an old school truck gearbox pair, common ones are like a 5+4 combo. Here, according to Squirrel's video, is the order of gears solely by ratio, in the form Gear A/Gear B, where 1 is to back and 3 is to front: 1/1, 1/2, 2/1, 2/2, 1/3, 2/3, 3/2, 3/3 As you can see, running B to 3 while A is still in 1 is a higher gear than using most of A2. You probably also want to shift whichever gearbox to the higher gear before switching the other to a lower gear, as in 2/2 would shift temporarily to 2/3 before ending to the desired 1/3. Also run throttle to idle before shifting, else you get the not-so-fun BRRRR.
You can pretty much shift below around 40% rpm. This is important if you try to use shifting down to brake the thing. If you happen to shift, even at idle, with more than 40% rpm, you'll get that not-so-fun audio from the transmission as well ;)
I hope in the future as a really big stretch goal they could get co-op working with just one other friend, would help complete the fireman and engineer experience.

The diesel-mechanical seems inspired by the Drewry diesel locos provided to British Railways in the early 50s (Class 04 and later Class 03) which I've always wanted to try operating. Mainly because the real locos usually have controls on both sides for one-man operation, though I like the detail in game that the lever slots for the other side are there, but all the levers are missing, which seems like they were cannibalized for parts or something
I'm really hoping in a possible customization/upgrading update they let us add the other side back in. Would love to put another radiator on the DE2 while I'm at it 😂
The Diesel-Hydraulic is a bit uncanny to me because its a bit of a mixture between a german V90 and V100. Its body looks more like a V100 but the shape is more like a V90. In Germany for decades the primary mainline diesel engine was diesel-hydraulic. Why Germany was the only country in the world to go all out on diesel-hydraulic, I don’t know. Class 218 and it sibling’s 215, 216, 217 and 219 are slowly being retired as they where all build in between 1971 and 1979. Now they getting replaced by the class 245 build by Bombardier (now Alstom) which are diesel-electric. But you still see class 218 everywhere on sidings kept ready for there next assignment. On thing about the steam engine, you stated that the water in the glass goes up from the water expanding with the heat. Liquid water doesn't really change volume with temperature very much. The reason why gauge fills is because of the difference of pressure on the water from the boiler and the pressure at the top of the gauge. It takes some time for the steam in the boiler to travel through the long copper pipe to the top of the gauge. During which it is cooling and losing pressure and pulling the water level up until an equalibrum is met. Once the heat from the boiler travels up the copper line it has a more accurate reading on the gauge. Can't wait to give the s282 a try for myself in game!

It's a little thing, but one of my favorite additions has been the lanterns, particularly the red marker lantern as it's a dead ringer for the real Adlake Kero I use. At night, it's almost uncanny to go back to the caboose to the footlocker where I keep them all stored, dig out a white one to put on the desk to see and read the air gauge, and a red one to go hang on the back coupling to mark the rear of the train. Caught myself just watching the light dancing on the walls of the caboose and listening to it rain outside parked in a siding with the loco shut off and dark ahead. Only thing missing was some fuel to chuck in the stove to get a kettle on for some tea. Really looking forward to the steam switch engine that's coming up too!
Seems like Derail Valley is turning out to be the Kerbal Space Program of train sims. Silly premise, surprising detail, steep learning curve but addicting enough gameplay to potentially inspire a whole generation of new professionals?
Haha, never would've thought of comparing the two, but not that you say it, its true! Both appear pretty silly at first glance, but the deeper you go, the more "oh wow" it gets.
Seeing the reaction to this made me remember back when I bought from my Model Railroader magazine the game 3D Railroad Master by Abracadata. It cost $50 and with a $2.50 weekly allowance it took forever to afford but it was the first "big" purchase I made with my allowance. Being 8 I really didn't do much besides see how fast I can go around the preloaded tracks or how long of a train I could make but its something that I get the same feeling from seeing this update to Derail Valley.
Hi, new physics person from Immersive Railroading here, since seeing this update come out I have taken it as a personal challenge of what I need to beat simulation wise... in Minecraft, so don't mind me while I spend the next few years coding a physics sim into Minecraft to hopefully get closer to what real locomotives feel like than even this, I have the background for it, but if there are any other idiosyncrasies of steam locomotives I should know about, please let me know
Aw man that feeling when you get the steam choo choo running for the first time. Steam shooting out the safety, steam billowing from the cylinder cocks and black smoke all above plus new chuffs. They got it RIGHT.
The DM 3 is really powerful for the 30 grand it costs to unlock. Just slap it in 2-2 and it will move, I tested it with 800 ton train on flat ground in the harbour and it pulled it without issue. Also another neat thing is when braking hard the wheels on the 282 and DM 3 will lock up and the engines will skid.
ive seen Derail Valley vids in my recommended, never watched em (despite being a train enjoyer myself. my autism has failed me to where im not a nerd about em). glad i watched ya first cause not only do ya know how to operate the trains normally, ya also show off the casual side. and the chaotic side lol. good job!
I picked up Derail Valley just before Overhauled dropped and the game just gets better with every update. Altfuture really hit a home run with this one.

Believe it or not, DVS isn’t the first game to simulate water expansion and sloshing in a digital steam Loco. Disneyland Railroad Sim has these details and an even more authentic cab-running feel! It’s much less game-y though which limits the fun.
I don't know if you'll see this or how many other people have requested this. There is a simulator out there that essentially simulates the entirety of a steam locomotive. The disney land railroad simulator. You can fire the engine cold and sit there for hours waiting for the water to heat, you have to blow out the condensate from the air pumps via the exhaust drains while turning them on. So many features on a steam engine that have never been touched in any other game are in that one. It has a price tag of 50-60 dollars, but I think it is a must try for your channel. It will give your audience a more clear idea on how a steam engine operates in an environment where you aren't sweating or freezing. I really hope you can check it out.
@@Hyce777 Thank you for responding, That is fair. It is not a fun train game, it is attempting to emulate the actual engines as much as possible. Whatever reasons you have are probably much more valid than I or anyone will ever know (not that we need to anyways) I was really anticipating your thoughts on the new update for DR. I am eagerly awaiting to see the new 0-6-0 they have. It looks like they've really turned a corner with modeling steam engines. Very excited for that.
short notice on the hydraulic engine: it closely resembles a german class 211 Diesel - most older german diesel engines are hydraulics. (Class 211 is from the 1960ies)
20:05 judging by all the metal shards flying out, you clearly broke something. I wonder what? Excited to see a "serious" playthrough of the game! Edit: Am I the only one who noticed the brake wheels on each side spin in opposite directions? Should they be doing that?
I've been doing some experimenting with the steam locomotive, and I've learned if it wheel slips too much without going anywhere even with sand and taking it easy you'll eventually blow out a cylinder
I love the improvements to the 282. I'm so happy to not have the tender banging into the back of the engine the whole drive. Plus I blew it up my first time out which is a nice positive.
Whoah, never heard about this but looks super neat. Finally some actual physics and no low gravity glitchy mess. A detail obsessed and dedicated developer for a detail obsessed and dedicated niche fanbase.
Hyce if you are interested in. That DM3 I’ve been learning how to use it and there’s a diagram for shifting it online. It’s not just out and in there’s 3 gears on each box and you use them like different ratios.
Altfuture have outdone themselves with Simulator. I played Overhauled recently, so that is still fresh in my head. It was a fun experience, especially with mods. But Simulator takes everything a step further Can't wait to watch the new career playthrough.
Driving the steam locomotive with an oversized cargo weight in VR is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. And I haven't even played the new 'Simulator' update yet. I'm almost upright with excitement to play it! 😵
By the way, they’re coming out with an 0-6-0 tank switcher locomotive in a couple of weeks. You can actually find it sitting next to Bob’s garage near the machine factory. You can’t drive it, but it’s still cool to look at
Sir, the amount of broken equipment, glass, smashing of equipment, derailed cars and more to the list, im going to ask you kindly to administer a pee exam for me for FRA testing! 😂😂😂 Excellent review! I have enjoyed the update myself so far! Keep it coming! wish it had multiplayer!
Yeah it's pretty close to the Class 03/04 only it's lacking the dual control setup thats in british diesel shunters. Siderod diesel shunters i find so cool.
I expect many many cups will be peed in That being said, I do look forward to your serious playthrough, especially when you start using the steam engine as it'll be interesting to see someone who operates (not drives, unlike what the game says) a real steam choochoo play the simulated one.
Excuse me while I extensively operate my keyboard in order to take down this weird ego-operated lexical opinion. In this game, you don't operate the trains, you literally drive them. The difference being in the selection of a route. If you can select a route, you no longer just operate a vehicle. Operating means actively servicing a machine that does its business (a function of time). When you ride something it has a volition of its own, or takes you along but you don't decide anything, except when to leave. When you drive a vehicle, you make a series of choices, including its operation and its destination. Here's an entry from a dictionary *Drive, verb.* "operate and control the direction and speed of a motor vehicle"
The diesel hydraulic engines got quite popular in Germany in a long time. Honestly the only real reason seems to be that the hydraulic turbine industry had some good lobby; the efficiency is horrendous, diesel electric is a lot more efficient and less failure prone.
The DM3 gearboxes have three speeds. Two gearboxes back to back. Like a brownie box, or on a 10/15(+) speed mountain bike. Dunno what the ratios are though.

Bro casually jumped out of a running train 😂😅
7:25 I knew I wasn't the only one who saw that handbrake and immediately went "YARRR HARD A'STARBOARD MATEYS"
Hyce: kaboom?? Dv devs: yes hyce, kaboom.
@6:25 they have to use a fluid coupling rather than a torque convertor( a more efficient fluid coupling) as the heating would be to great.
The Steam explosion scared the crap out of the Diesel Hydraulics
This is a great year for train games, can’t wait to get my hands on Railroader as well as this!
ive seen Derail Valley vids in my recommended, never watched em (despite being a train enjoyer myself. my autism has failed me to where im not a nerd about em). glad i watched ya first cause not only do ya know how to operate the trains normally, ya also show off the casual side. and the chaotic side lol. good job!
9/10 didn't add incredibly backed up toilet
I picked up Derail Valley just before Overhauled dropped and the game just gets better with every update. Altfuture really hit a home run with this one.
Nice, you still got it for the lower price then :)
Hyce: "DE-6 is a good old friend, right?"
DE-6 right after being rammed full speed astern into a string of cars: "This is a toxic relationship and I want out... 😬"
Somehow it feels right seeing the new big, fast Mike “sends it to spaghet” with “Kenosha” playing softly in the background.
I love how the 3 chime whistle starts out with the dissonance then blooms into the beautiful resolve, i got goose bumps on the live stream the first time
Believe it or not, DVS isn’t the first game to simulate water expansion and sloshing in a digital steam Loco. Disneyland Railroad Sim has these details and an even more authentic cab-running feel! It’s much less game-y though which limits the fun.
Dang, Hyce wasn’t kidding when he said coming soon 😂
Yeah right
Yeah I was like oh so the post was changed to public oh wait nope this is the video
Yeah, I've heard about that sim. I have heard it's pretty good, but I don't know if I want to give it a go. Personal reasons.
Talking about minor chords and major chords during a traimsim evaluation... you tickle all my interests, mr Hyce
Is this a holdup?
It's a science experiment!
Just wanted to make sure, I'm not the only one who gets creeped out by the "Spaghetti" of the boiler explosion right? Cuz it's looking nightmareish..
Hyce: *logs in*
Trains: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
time to first equipment damage: 3 minutes 39 seconds
15:26 tbh i like the old whistle better ngl
short notice on the hydraulic engine: it closely resembles a german class 211 Diesel - most older german diesel engines are hydraulics. (Class 211 is from the 1960ies)
Ayyy Squirrel gang, Love that dude! Thanks for the video Hyce!
For the DM3 Gearbox A is the main gearbox and Gearbox B is a range box. A3 B2 is good for about 25 kph and A3 B3 something like 55 - 60kph.
20:05 judging by all the metal shards flying out, you clearly broke something. I wonder what?
Excited to see a "serious" playthrough of the game!
Edit: Am I the only one who noticed the brake wheels on each side spin in opposite directions? Should they be doing that?
Probably for the sake of consistent experience; mechanically you're right, they shouldn't spin opposite, nor should there even be two...
@@Hyce777 yeah, it seems to me that they are going for a consistent clockwise to engage and counter-clockwise to release for all the handbrake wheels
20:03 is better comedy than I've seen on TV in a long time
22:58 When I first saw that boiler explosion it scared the living daylight outta me.
That was really entertaining. Between you and Squirrel I now want to buy this game.
"Take me to the gauges IMMEDIATELY, no eye contact." -Steve Smith
I've been doing some experimenting with the steam locomotive, and I've learned if it wheel slips too much without going anywhere even with sand and taking it easy you'll eventually blow out a cylinder
I love the improvements to the 282. I'm so happy to not have the tender banging into the back of the engine the whole drive. Plus I blew it up my first time out which is a nice positive.
"Why is it so hard to blow up a locomotive" That was hilarious 😂
Whoah, never heard about this but looks super neat. Finally some actual physics and no low gravity glitchy mess. A detail obsessed and dedicated developer for a detail obsessed and dedicated niche fanbase.
That diesel hydraulic totally s*** itself when boiler exploded XD
Hyce if you are interested in. That DM3 I’ve been learning how to use it and there’s a diagram for shifting it online. It’s not just out and in there’s 3 gears on each box and you use them like different ratios.
Altfuture have outdone themselves with Simulator. I played Overhauled recently, so that is still fresh in my head. It was a fun experience, especially with mods. But Simulator takes everything a step further Can't wait to watch the new career playthrough.
It sucks that mods broke with the update. Its amazing how great the base game is without (most) mods after the update. They did. So good.
Any good mod recommendations?
Driving the steam locomotive with an oversized cargo weight in VR is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. And I haven't even played the new 'Simulator' update yet. I'm almost upright with excitement to play it! 😵
So much cooler than a top-down planner. Nice.
By the way, they’re coming out with an 0-6-0 tank switcher locomotive in a couple of weeks. You can actually find it sitting next to Bob’s garage near the machine factory. You can’t drive it, but it’s still cool to look at
I gotta say, the updated steam locomotive seems amazing, hope I can still haul 1800 ton loads out of the harbor with it
one of best updates to a game in all of gaming history, hats off to you devs is fantastic.
You most absolutely correct dear sir!!! This the best Sim ever! Please make a sim version to. But I just love this video..
Sir, the amount of broken equipment, glass, smashing of equipment, derailed cars and more to the list, im going to ask you kindly to administer a pee exam for me for FRA testing! 😂😂😂
Excellent review! I have enjoyed the update myself so far! Keep it coming! wish it had multiplayer!
Game looks sweet, I never cared for trains ever but I am loving this video, fun times, good content.
I love how he went so fast he blew up some part of the DH4 and didn't even realize it.
really enjoyed the livestream last night, the accuracy is really cool.
I can't wait for derail valley mods to be ported to derail valley simulator
A train enthusiast who knows some music theory and has passion for details in train sims??? Why didn't RUclips bring me to you sooner 😭
Hey Hyce, The 0-6-0 diesel shunter is possibly a BR class 03 or class 04 which I find as a fan of british locmotives I find neat.
Yeah it's pretty close to the Class 03/04 only it's lacking the dual control setup thats in british diesel shunters.
Siderod diesel shunters i find so cool.
That thumbnail is a work of art
Here's an entry from a dictionary
*Drive, verb.*
"operate and control the direction and speed of a motor vehicle"
Side note, the bathroom door has always been there. But now they made the commission proper so that you ctiallu fall into the step
Hooopefully they will
implement banked curves. That‘s what I really enjoy in real live when driving trains.
It is just amazing how realistic train sims can be
22:56 pop goes the weasle🤣
Don't tell me the train goes faster with the fan on.
Keume didn't program this game, so we're fine.
The diesel hydraulic engines got quite popular in Germany in a long time. Honestly the only real reason seems to be that the hydraulic turbine industry had some good lobby; the efficiency is horrendous, diesel electric is a lot more efficient and less failure prone.
Loving the update. I've pretty much only been using the DM3. It's a great challenge to drive and just keeps chugging regardless of grade.
The DM3 gearboxes have three speeds. Two gearboxes back to back. Like a brownie box, or on a 10/15(+) speed mountain bike. Dunno what the ratios are though.
