Loved finding this video. I was born and raised in Hertford Heath and have always walked the paths you were on. Living in south east Australia now it was lovely to revisit through your eyes. I know there was so much to take in, but I think you would have enjoyed walking through Haileybury school in the village. Thanks for posting!
Wonderful video as always John. Amazing how in a simple 45 minute walk you can encounter over 2000 years worth of history. Something about the snow and the woods gives off a kind of CS Lewis-esque ambience, with a touch of Neil Gaiman.
Absolutely fascinating John. Long may you continue to share your films, writings, reflections and insights with us. It's your personality, love and passion for what fascinates you that has me hooked. I am very grateful. Dave.
Thanks John, I lived in Cheshunt through the 50s and 60s,moved to Enfield in 73, and still live in Enfield, was a Taxi driver in Hoddesdon for about 6 years before retiring, I have been through most of the places on your walk, but you made it so interesting, one video I will watch again,
LOVELY WALK ''WHERE EVER THAT MAY BE'' i MISSED THAT FROM WAY BACK THEN,.. LOVED YOUR WANDERING AND THE FACT THAT YOU FINNISHED AT THE RIVER LEE WHERE I SPENT MANY HOURS PLAING AS A KID. CHEERS
I've just been rewatching a few of your videos.. am feeling so thankful for these lovely excursions and the way you offer them for the vicarious pleasure of viewers. The visuals, narration and soundtracks always come together beautifully.
I loved this walk - it's one of those that really stays with you. Thought of this day in the 31 degrees of heat as I walked along the Stoke Newington section of Ermine Street
Another great walk John. There is something very special about a walk in the winter. The land has gone to sleep, it quite and you don't have to go far from London to experience a pleasant solitude. Hope you enjoyed the pint at the end.
Many thanks indeed - and agree the slumbering winter landscape can reveal things that become cloaked in summer foliage. Ended up having tea in the end would you believe then a pint back in Leytonstone
another superb film .... I know the river Lea around this area well. I think the bumps in the ground (3.5 mins in) may be remnants of the old Tomato and cucumber nurseries that were all over the Wormley/ Hoddesdon area up to the 1970s ...( so I read) .. I used to fish the lea in Wormley.. it's a lovely area .
Thanks John, it's a great area. And thanks also for that pointer on the nurseries - do you know if there was an Italian community involved in the market gardens, I heard something about that 20 odd years ago
I grew up in Hertford and now live in Standon close to another part on Ermine Street which is very much a modern road. I had no idea about the “off road” section in your video, I’ll have to get down there and explore!
Thank you for taking the time to do follow-up research when you don’t know what something is - for me, being informed is part of the attraction of watching channels such as yours, which, by the way, is one of the best. 👍
This was awesome. Ermine Street runs through March I think, I'm pretty sure I've walked on a trackway that people tell me was Ermine Street at one point. Would love confirmation on this John. Love the videos, recent fan. x
Hi John, lovely video as usual! Quick question....why is the river spelt "Lee" over the border whereas It's "Lea" in Essex/London? Also, as far as I'm aware from an old 19th century source, the name Ermine is a corruption of the German "Hermann" aka "Arminius" in Latin, the Cheruscii chieftain who was responsible for the ambush and massacre of the Roman legions in the Teutoberg forest. The Saxon invaders of England named the old Roman road after him. Just a little footnote.
Love your recent focus on the Lea valley of late John. Do you have a book/ longer film planned? Also, I think you may have covered this in the past but I'm never sure if it's Lee or Lea?
Hi Gideon - I can't stay away from the Lea Valley at the moment and really for the last 4 years. I've been writing about it to some extent, not sure where it's going though. As far as I know it can be both Lee and Lea
Great film John. Very interesting. The soundtrack worked really well. Do you have firm ideas regarding the music before you shoot. Or does the musical inspiration/choices occur in the editing process?
Really inspiring walk/video. John, I can highly recommend the section of the Hertfordshire Way between Cuffley and Hertford. I have a video of it on my channel if you're interested.
There are parts of the Roman road substrate poking through the elbow lane surface, but normally only visible in the summer.

Enjoyed your video John. I have lived in Hertford for 35 years. I love it. Old with character, and near to London. Lots of history here.
"There's no wind" says John, over a clip of dried rushes clearly blowing in the wind.:))) Another great video. Thank you.
+jacek szulecki ha, caught me using clips out of sequence - well spotted. Thanks for the kind words
Did you find out what the mounds in the field were?
+jacek szulecki good question, I think there's a comment here about them, possibly a legacy of the market gardens in the area
Wonderful video as always John. Amazing how in a simple 45 minute walk you can encounter over 2000 years worth of history. Something about the snow and the woods gives off a kind of CS Lewis-esque ambience, with a touch of Neil Gaiman.
Thanks Renfro - love your description of the woods
Absolutely fascinating John. Long may you continue to share your films, writings, reflections and insights with us. It's your personality, love and passion for what fascinates you that has me hooked. I am very grateful. Dave.
That's really kind of you David, and thanks so much for your support - I love sharing this stuff with you all
Thank you.

Nice video john what a beautiful walk .
Thank you for going up the roman road, As a local i find the road fascination to even find parts of the original roman road showing and artefacts.
I've just been rewatching a few of your videos.. am feeling so thankful for these lovely excursions and the way you offer them for the vicarious pleasure of viewers. The visuals, narration and soundtracks always come together beautifully.
Thank you Carole- that's really kind of you - I love making these videos, gives me so much
Can't believe you walked by the wonderful Veteran 600 year old yew in Wormleybury churchyard without a mention or a second glance.
Aah - I’ll have to go back now
Magnificently calm and quiet John! Thanks.
I loved this walk - it's one of those that really stays with you. Thought of this day in the 31 degrees of heat as I walked along the Stoke Newington section of Ermine Street
Such historical places, such a great walk! I love the walls - are they flint? Perfect weather for it too, totally enchanted!
11:50 what a view. Can just imagine Roman legionaries appearing over the crest. Well i can.
It's fantastic out there Simon - often yearn to go back, felt like I was stepping right into the fresh footprints of the Legions
Always a pleasure to watch one of your videos John.
Thanks Stewart
the Romans built the straightest road I've ever seen John amazing people love this walk thanks x

Your channel is fantastic! Such a joy to go along with you and your walks! Big fan!
Many thanks, that's very kind of you to say
that's absolutely right John . there still is a Italian community in Hoddesdon. I worked with a guy who was from there , from Italian community...
Thanks John, that's interesting - possibly explains the two nice Italian cafes I saw in Hertford as well (I was a bit too shabby to go in)
that bay on the other side of the river i had a 17and half pound pike at bout 45 secs thx john for bringing back memories I was bout 18 im now 62 thx

The Corn Exchange in Hertford is the site of the original town Gael before it moved
to Ware Road

Thanks so much John - I find doing the research fascinating, particularly on Roman and pre-Roman Britain
This was awesome. Ermine Street runs through March I think, I'm pretty sure I've walked on a trackway that people tell me was Ermine Street at one point. Would love confirmation on this John. Love the videos, recent fan. x
I shall definitely take a look, I'm not that familiar with the route beyond Youngsbury
Winter best time to lose yourself, love lincoln and york oh and London
Great piece. Well done. Have you thought of following Ermine all the way up to Lincoln and beyond?
Many thanks. I'm curious about it but haven't seriously considered actually doing the walk to be honest
Thanks for the reply. Big shame. Would of been a good piece. Cheers John.
How do you film yourself John? I'm puzzled.
Ermine Street seems in better nick than most modern roads-no potholes

Great film John. Very interesting. The soundtrack worked really well. Do you have firm ideas regarding the music before you shoot. Or does the musical inspiration/choices occur in the editing process?
Thanks John. I usually choose the music at the beginning of the edit and cut to it - sometimes takes a while to find the right track to start with
👏👏
Soggy, boggy, but lovely.
thanks - really boggy but I wouldn't have it any other way
Really inspiring walk/video. John, I can highly recommend the section of the Hertfordshire Way between Cuffley and Hertford. I have a video of it on my channel if you're interested.
Thanks Voxley - you're the third person to recommend that walk so that means I'll have to head out there
ABOUT TO TELL YOU THAT JOHN, WHEN IT CAME UP IN SCREEN RE COAL TAX MARKERS.
Lo Boo papá. Okey 😚 mamá
"I stopped drinking milk because I realised I am not a baby cow"
I did film the rest of that vegan graffiti and talk about it but the video was getting a bit long so I didn't use it
