- Sea trout are one of the most prized forms of our native Trout (Salmo trutta L.) present within Ireland. What is being done to increase our understanding of this enigmatic species? Key biological data is required to help develop sustainable fishery management regimes. This data needs to be collected through coordinated surveys designed to capture representative information across catchments. Basic information on local spawning locations is sometimes absent requiring persistent efforts to identify currently productive areas and to restore previously productive habitats. This short video attempts to describe some steps which are being taken to increase our knowledge base of this form of Trout and to raise awareness of the threats and opportunities for this iconic animal. It is hoped this video can contribute towards constructive debates on the conservation, protection and improvement of Trout and the habitats they rely on.
Fantastic work!
Fantastic work, the river ban in ferns co Wexford is a similar river used to be full of sea trout I don't live there anymore , pity.
good to see somthing being done good job
banger video lionel ❤️🐟
This is great work. Our sea trout are invaluable to our environment. Can you let us know which tributary you're working on, if that isn't too sensitive a topic. I'm thinking that this is the Fahan or the Roe, or the Mourne, or Finn? Keep up the noble work. That our authorities don't designate this catchment area as a critical species protection puzzles me. I also never thought of the pollution caused by cattle trampling on the banks upsetting the spawning grounds. This is an education my students will now see thanks to you research.
Ballynahinch when I fished it went from 1300 in 89 to 13 in 90 and you think fishery management will somehow solve this?
Released 6lb sea trout on the mourne this year
What about the carrigs river after the pollution???
A reply would be greatly appreciated.
Oisín O'Halloran.
Oisin, can you contact me at the e-mail address at the end of the video art.niven@loughs-agency.org and provide a few more details of the river name, location and date of the pollution and i will ask a colleague who works in the area, many thanks Art
