There are these songs... that when you hear them, you get shivers down your spine, goosebumps on your arms, tears in your eyes, a lump in your throat when you try to explain to your children how good this song is... that your mind goes back in time, on your bike to school with that song blasting on your Walkman... This is one of those songs for me.
My father from Dubarton Scotland came to America ( Philadelphia ) and met my mom who's mother was from Dungannon in County Tyrone. This song makes me think of them and the roads traveled to make a Scottish n Irish love story in America. No don't sorrow no don't weep for tonight at last I am coming home, I am coming home
U2 hit their, "In the Zone" moment, just like an Athlete who can't miss a shot, from 1983's "War" record, followed by this one, "Unforgettable Fire", then "Joshua Tree", and reinvented themselves with, "Achtung Baby". Those 4 records in 8 years were masterpieces. They could have stopped at that point as they were already legendary.
You know how the first version of a song is the one that almost always becomes your favorite because it's the one that initially becomes a part of you... U2 is so effective with their live versions of their songs that I often can't make up my mind which I like better. The live version of this song has several parts I like better, but this version does also. Each provides a way of touching you effectively, but differently. In the end, the studio version I think emulates the feel of the lyrics a little bit better, but both are just excellent!

This album was my therapist during my angsty teenage years in the 80's. I still play it loud and sing my heart out ❤
