I think the choice between sticking with what works and innovating at the same time is a false dichotomy. A brand like Lamy has retained the Lamy 2000 since back when a Parker 51 style design was cutting edge and not pastiche while building up a stable of models that have in their own right been generally successful around it.

I like the idea of a company that has a flagship pen or just a pen that they keep the same all the time and carry for years, while then having other pens around the flagship pen in their line up that are unique designs each time. That way you have the time to save up for the flagship pen before it disappears but can still wait for new and unique ones to come out every so often.

I think a combination of keeping the classics and innovating is necessary. Innovation is the key to a company’s longevity. Enjoyed the review. Thanks.

I had purchased this pen and the ballpoint model prior to watching the video. Thanks for the review - it was reassuring that this is indeed a well-made, robust and reliable pen. As for the modern lines, that was the attraction for me along with the petrol color and the appealing styling. The chrome does not bother me at all and the firm snap of the post on either end of the pen speaks to German engineering and the fact that this pen will last like new for years to come.

As much as I love the 800 and 1000 lines, their "non-standard" models have always intrigued me. My first fountain pen, a gift from my parents back in 9th grade, was a Pelikan Pharo. Neat pen. Still have it.

For some reason, I guess it's just marketing, Pelikan uses a lot of Greek elements on both their designs and on their names. Pharo in Greek language, means "Lighthouse" If I'm not wrong, that pen also looks like a Lighthouse!

Very nice and beautiful design. Very suitable for long periods writing, last year I wrote my book "Ilam kee shama" candle of knowledge on this pen. I'm fully satisfied and enjoy smooth medium nib of the pen

Can we say , that Pelikan nib is smoothest than any other.

Interesting comment about the nib resembling the Safari nib: to me the Pura looks like an updated sequel to the Pelikan Signum, launched in 1979, one year before the Safari. Same attempt at contemporaneity and similar price point. The Signum nib also had folded sides. And the Mont Blanc Noblesse from the mid-70s also had them.

132 USD for a Pura? That is extreme. The normal price here in Germany is 75 EUR (=USD). I paid 50 EUR for mine (special limited offer) and I am very happy with this pen. But I would never have paid over 100 EUR for it.

Fine review, thanks. I did not like this pen because it slips on my hand because of non grip section.

The section and nib reminds me so much of a Lamy Studio which it seems to compete with directly. However, I prefer the general appearance of the Pelikan. Thanks much for this review.

I think it is great that Pelikan makes new models, but I can get the m200/205 for about the same price and they are piston fillers. But glad to see that they are trying different things.

This is definitely expensive... compared to the main line, it's cheaper.
But for the materials, and what you get... it's expensive.
It's kind of like a Sheaffer design, metal, nib and all, but with the premium of buying a Pelikan.
I think they could've gone for a more affordable price tag... this could've been a banger.

Guess Mont Blanc have Standard unchanged solid pens.
But they do shake it up with other styles. Even limited editions.
Works well for them even though you don’t like em.
    Nice Pelikon

Every now and then top pen companies should produce something out of the box for anniversaries to show people how innovative they can be.

I think it's a smart business decision when a pen manufacturer introduces non-traditional pens to their pen lineup. I like to see the innovation and variety. Also, if I like the looks of the pen, I will often buy one of the non-traditional pens to see what they are like and how they differ from their main model(s). If it turns out I really like the pen, I will usually buy at least one more in a different color. I've discovered some very nice pens that way.

Pelikan, to me anyway, will always be defined by their design for the m600/800/1000 etc. that design is classic and gorgeous.
Yes, Pelikan does need to innovative, but not at the expense of their iconic/flagship models.

  • @rougepilot5513
    @rougepilot5513 Год назад

Pen companies should continue to innovate, but also keep up a standard recognizable lineup that may get updated over the years. For example, Pelikan should keep their classic M-whatever pen style, while also producing pens like the Pura or the Twist. Another one would be Kaweco keeping many pens with the traditional faceted design iconic to the brand, but also produce some other pen styles, both to test the market and to give some variety.

I’m all for innovation. Although, half the reason I bought my Pelikans was the current design of the Souveran. Though, I know that design also only goes back so far. Like most things, I’d fall on the side of moderation. No need to be too much of a slave to tradition, but no reason to toss it only in the name of “innovation”. And there’s certainly the market today to support both traditional and more contemporary designs.

Thanks for this - very good video. I'm all in favour of pen companies that want to innovate, but a large number of them just need to focus on quality control with their existing product lines first and foremost. I find that both Lamy and Montblanc are innovative in design terms, and still manage to turn out properly made products that actually write, first time.

Of course they should bring some novelty, to stir up some excitement, while keeping classic designs. Diplomat is a good example, with Aero and Elox (I don't personally find these designs appealing, but the brand gets some hype). Compare this to Waterman and Parker today. Nothing new, same old, and nobody talking about them anymore.

Please, which F. pen, around 100-200e price range, doesn't usually come with a babys bottom and writes beautiful? I've had 2 German made ones, from famous companies, that both came with issues. I need one that at least, can write properly. Thanks in advance

The model has been around for a number of years. I like the size. I own the ballpoint but not the fountain pen.
The price for what you are getting is a little high, considering the Souveran collection, it seems downright reasonable.
That the nib writes a bit on the fine side, is a bit surprising to me. Pelikan nibs are usually wider than stated.
    Good review, Stephen.

Eeenteresting. Capped, it looks like a piston-filler, and it's not apparent that posting is so emphasized in the design. I would buy the s**t out of this pen, if not for the section. I am one of those sweaty-fingered beasts.
