  • Some people say you can't use the lines on your rotary cutting mat to measure and cut your fabric. Others say you can. Which is right? Special guest Marianne Fons (PBS's Love of Quilting) joins daughter and Quilty creator Mary Fons to talk about and demonstrate rotary cutting methods. There are a lot of ways to cut a piece of fabric, and on today's show, the gals talk you through it.

So until I watched this video, I always uses the mat lines. I just tried your mom's method, I think I'm in love. I didn't even think to try this!

I just loved this video - your report, but also your acceptance of other systems. It seems that we find systems that work well for us, but yet are still looking for improvements in the system.trying a new method can affirm your dedication to your current system or open bright new worlds. Perhaps that is why I love to 'reverse engineer' pattern and methods so very much.

Here's tht none not one of my quilts would win at a quilt show. Sure I wish all my points were perfect and that my squares were really square. But my quilts are still pretty and used and loved. That's good enough for me

That's a very interesting method that makes good sense. So why are there lines printed on the Matt if we're not supposed to use them?

The problem with the second method is you use a little more fabric on. Each cut, and most quilt shops use actual measurements not allowing for extra. You may run out of fabric for project

If I am cutting a large strip I use your mom's methods. If I am cutting something small I use yours. Why? The only mat I hacr with lines on it is 5 inches wide ... andy big mat with no lines was my grandma's. I never saw her with a lined mat. ;)

I appreciate these gals are THE experts but as a beginner I find the "arguing" back and forth about which way to do things very confusing. Sorry, not for me.
