I have a 2023 CX-30 Astina. Fantastic car. The simplicity of a N/A engine and torque converter automatic is why these are a solid choice. I’ve had a range of Mazdas over the past 20 years and they have all been great cars.
@@therightcar We purchased a new 2024 Astina 25 FWD 6 spd auto with the LOT and it's brilliant. AWD was out as this adds 110kg to overall weight and is more expensive and adds a lot more complexity plus increased fuel consumption lugging around the extra weight. AWD is simply unwarranted for our driving needs in Australia. Absolutely gorgeous classy car where the Toyota, Nissan, Honda's and everything else looking crass and wedgy and over the top. Cheers.
We bought a 2.0 Touring earlier in the year. Those other cars you recommended might sound great. That's if they'll sell you one. We never thought it would be so hard to give someone almost $40k. Mazda on the other hand bent over backwards to get us in one. Car drives nice. Feels nice. And yeah we could actually buy it. We're happy.
Friends of ours have just bought a 2.0 litre version. Its ride and quietness on country roads are exceptional. The problem with recommending Toyota anything is that the wait times are still unacceptable. 😊
Good review, nice & balanced analysis. I have a current gen Mazda 3 with the 2.5 litre engine. Which I think is the one to go for. I just wish Mazda would offer the 2.5 turbo model here. Also both the 3 & CX30 are getting a bit over due for a major refresh in my opinion starting to feel their age a bit. As for Mazdas being thirsty it all depends on how you drive I can quite easily get 6.8-7 l/100km on my daily commute from Mornington to Melbourne with a mix of freeway & stop start traffic.
To start with Matt, I have a Mazda 3 sedan with the 2.5 litre engine and it does me. As for the review vehicle, I must say that black plastic cladding is not for me. A thing with Mazda vehicles in my opinion is that the design of both the interior and exterior is pretty much generic. Looking at what I want in my next vehicle is naturally aspirated engine, full size spare and a torque convertor transmission. Interior noise on coarse chip surfaces is still too high even though Mazda claim to have reduced it. Don't get me wrong, I like my present Mazda (current model) but I am not sure I would be looking to buy another one.
That's an interesting take! I actually think Mazda's interior is pretty premium for the price point. Plus they just know how to make a good looking car, the mazda 3 and cx30 just beat out all the other similar cars in looks in my opinion. You really have to nit pick to fault them
I test drove a new 2024 CX-30. The only downsides were the ride was a little rough and it was a bit small. The price and good enough Mazda quality are two huge benefits.
Matt, you missed the point of this car. The cx30, based on the mazda3, is a small suv. If you need a family car, get the cx5 or something bigger. This car is perfect for a single person or for empty nesters. Don't waste your money with the top models. The 2 litre is fine most times. Put it into sport mode for bigger punch.
Hi Matt the top spec is the one, but as you said, its 50k. Thats a lot of money for a non hybrid, and mazdas are thirsty. Both mum and dad love mazdas and would only choose a mazda. Mum wants a new car and despite driving the others this was her choice bc its familar. The kona was a close second. There is no doubt mazdas do feel luxurious inside, but they all look the same and that for me makes them a bit souless and unexciting.
I can't understand brands bringing non-hydrids to the market anymore for SUV's and Cars. Admittingly Utes still needs development time, but even they are starting to proliferate in models. The CX-30 is a prime model to become a super Hybrid to compete against the BYD Sealion-6 for example. If the CX-30 had the (non-turbo)2.0L plus a 1.8kWh battery with single and daul motors, it would really find a niche in the market. Look I love my big Aussie Holden, until I visit the pump and the day is soon coming that I'll need to put my words into action and jump back into the Hybrid ownership.
Hi Matt, I’ve been researching via your reviews for the last year or so very helpful. I’ve got my list down to the Touring 25 CX-30, I didn’t mind the ride but the engine was noisy. Honda ZrV VtiL+ with the 8 yr deal, or the Honda top spec Hrv Hybrid released on Tuesday 5 yr warranty. 4 seats and small boots not a concern. I would’ve also looked at a Kamiq but no dealers where I live. Thanks for any advice and for the thoroughness of your reviews.
I'll echo Matt .... the ZR-V is a great choice. It is amazing that it is cheaper than a Civic in VTi L+ form... Honda's pricing is all over the place! My only real dislike on the ZR-V is the CVT... (I prefer the CX-30's torque converter auto). But the 8 year warranty, a bit of extra money in your pocket and the $1000 fuel card are hard to beat.

@@amygreenwood8814 Good decisions.... happy hunting! One more thought: the HR-V hybrid has a power / weight ratio of around 70 kW / tonne, and the ZR-V has 91 kW / tonne. That'll make a difference on the open road, especially with a load (less so in town, when the instant electric torque will compensate). On the other hand, the HRV- hybrid will be a lot more economical....
I’ve just ordered a brand new Mazda CX-30 (Exclusive Line) with electric tailgate, heated steering wheel and the 12 speaker Bose surround sound system among many other features. I chose the color Deep Crystal Blue just like the Mazda 2 I have now. 😊 I will get my new CX-30 in March 2025. Can’t wait! I love Mazda. 😍
Never - my last car had it. I rarely looked at the dashboard, everything I needed - mostly speed - was up there, in the same field of view. No need to refocus continually.
We chose Hyundai over Mazda only because of Hyundai’s 1.6 turbo. But, there’s so much cabin noise that on a long drive we feel fatigued. Saw your review of the Karoq. Might go for that next.
Hi matt, i’ve gotta say another great review top video I think the Mazda CX-30 brings little change to an already familiar design, which may feel outdated. Its exterior still features plastic cladding that gives off a rugged look, but it seems out of place compared to sleeker competitors. From what you said, the car is reliable and offers a smooth driving experience, it doesn't stand out in terms of new technology or safety features, where other brands have pulled ahead. The large number of model options-9 in total-adds confusion without offering significant differentiation. Very disappointing and I’m looking for a small SUV. What Mazda has done with the cx30 doesn’t help.

I actually think you should save money on this one and go for the lower entry model like the Evolve. If you're after an SUV, its likely you're not caring too much about sportiness. But it depends where you live I guess and the kind of driving you're doing.
I started to object to Mazda before purchasing my current Nissan Tiida in 2008, due to their universal use of cheap spare tyres (known as space savers). I have only used spare tyres on cars a few times over a 50 year driving career, but still consider a proper spare essential.
The CX30 is a safe choice (unless the guys from Redriven are correct). If me it falls short compared to something like a T-Roc, especially in terms of boot space and engine response. The CX30 is also starting to look old. Given the asking prices from Mazda I'd say it's an ok choice not a great one.
Good review although I find the CX-30 a very quiet car with a “sporty comfortable’ ride. The lower grades may have a softer ride due to higher profile tyres.
Mazda engine is a bit thirsty, they have max out all potential of a natural aspiring engine! Range of choice could be good but also confusion, there is more competitive brand with batter package in the same price range
I looked at buying a mazda and honestly I hate the bonnet it's way to long, that turning circle is horrific, quickly wen't on to look at the quashci and the asx, if the quashci's engine wasn't so jolty I would of bought it but wen't asx and have not had an issue it's a zippy thing but alas I am gonna upgrade in the next 2 years so checking what's the best on the market looking at hybrids possibly.

Yeah it was an odd one... they listed a bunch of issues that I've never seen, and some of them are not even findable on the internet... it's almost as though they did their research on an American owners complaint therapy group. The lack of research was evident in their assertion that it doesn't have a 12 volt socket... when it does (under the armrest).
cannot believe in 2024 you still get such a small screen in the center console and no digital display in front of you :( and It is not at least hybrid or ev . So no , I dont like it all.
Have you actually looked into the Corolla battery? i have heard it's between 1 &1.3 Kwh and in EV mode you can drive about 1 Km!! What a joke, my MTB has a battery over half that size. EV and Hybrid upfront costs are very under considered. The cost of buying an EV or Hybrid is very rarely returned in the life of the vehicle ownership.
Here we go again - a journalist "you don't have to turn off SAFETY systems to live with it". The safety systems are part of the design, part of how it gets a 5 Star ANCAP score, how it is appropriate for Australian Standards. And you encourage everyone to just turn them off. What is the Insurance Company or Coroner going to say when the driver says "but the journalist at "xyz" said to turn it off".
The Toyota You suggested must be the ugliest car I have ever seen. The Skoda seems an interesting choice. The CX30 is really a nice car to drive if You enjoy driving. Australian roads are a disgrace in general. I have been living there for many years.

Wow, I feel the complete opposite. Mazda have the best looking cars on the market and if you look at their competitors, the interior is no where near as premium as Mazda's. They know how to make a great looking car inside and out.
@LaurenEdwards-fy6el hyundai and kia beat the pants off mazda, so does vw and their sub brand cupra. Mazda sits above Toyota, but once the refresh hits the best of Toyota's line Mazda is going to be left behind.

A lot of folks don't like the cladding but it does remove the need for mudflaps.
I just bought the U.S turbo version of this car. Love it. Test drove everything in the same price range and this was the clear winner.

Yeah the higher profile tyres help. But it’s not as comfortable as many rivals.

How is a 10.6 metre turning circle is horrific?! It's the same as the ASX and Kona. The Qashqai is 11.1 metres.

The biggest issue with this car is frequent rattling noises. I think.
All that I know is that Ferrari Purosangue looks exactly the same as Mazda CX-30

No hybrid option comparable to the tikes of Toyota, Hyundai or GWM. Also very pricey

The giant black bevel edges around the base of the car are just too hideous. They remind me of old-school laptops and ipads. There's zero refinement!
