Wolf in the 1960's at the intersection of Blues and Rock was Surrealism incarnate. Here he's playing Brian Jones' Firebird VII with Hubert Sumlin keeping it real playing a Gallanti Italian plastic guitar. Thanks so much for posting this clip...it's worthy of inclusion in the Smithsonian if not the new African American Museum Archives.
hi Artful- Jagger has a unique slosh as he did bite off the tip of his tongue... Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits, so many do as Chester Burnett, yet check out Louis Armstrong we call this "gravel and grit" many have used the style since was from old times even before recording, maybe they are all originals, who knows, Mick likes his attentions, even as Dylan is said to imitate Guthrie and Cash., then check out Mouse, PUBLIC EXECUTION and date these, is trippy and thought you may appreciate, jam on Artful Dodger, jam it yonder run and gun, we all have some echoes in our sun star, flock a star flocker star, flock a star... only a farther sun than we are! haha, excuse my bad use of humor, many a short fuse amuses the rumors of my tumor hence, I am with the dissidents, boo yah!!! The Stolen Drones, one of my favorite cover bands, like the Dirty Mac, sounds suspiciously like the Rutles or maybe just Lennon, who knows, best is Jimi Hendrix, yet Jimmy Thackery sure does too, I ride in a band of gypsies, half breeds and bikers... so we take a shot and gotta say, your name fits right in, "Sir can I have some more?" Oliver savvy that mate, and that trippy Mary Poppins, think Disney knew what was in that sugar cube- Owsley Acid; oops, lysergic blues I fall through the doors in the floor, climb back up, all blood and bones, and demand some more, yup... can never get enough until we get s'mo... aw right back to front lines, a snort for law and straw for order, pay the tolls get no quarter, rolling thunder, snake eyes and she rides to rise, oh damn she rises to ride.. so ride I must. Boo-yah!
Still can't get over how I didn't know he could even play guitar, never mind slide.. and he slides exactly right.. his pitch is perfect.. What a groove they've got going on here..
+sgdeluxedoc The more I discover about the Wolf the more I like him.. both as a person and as a musician.. Did you know he refused to even call himself a "real musician" ! One minute with him and I would have set him straight on that! He preferred to simply call himself an entertainer, leaving the title musician for folks like Clapton or Hubert Sumlin.. although by musician I think he really meant people that don't sing... Hubert is another person I discovered late. I'd first heard Wolf records years ago, but since I only heard the first two and must of his RPM and King material I didn't pursue it further until quite recently. Have to say I pleasantl surprised, and was bowled over by Hubert's guitar playing in some of wolf's early '60s recordings - especially Hidden Charms and 300 Pounds of Joy... Just goes to show that even after nearly 40 years can still discover new surprises...
sgdeluxedoc im 32 right now, and when i was about 26, i started on the blues of that era.. i was absolutely taken over. Wolf, muddy, and john lee hooker were a miniature obsession (im fully aware and was then that they were merely the tip of the iceberg, although those 3 are all top top bluesmen to me) and inspired me to begin the brink of writing blues music.. and this was while i was in a successful hardcore/punk band! Haha. Really great input by the way, especially your mentioning Hubert.. reading up on Howlin was a great idea at the time bc i got to see who someone like Hubert was to the music community at the time (a legend) while simultaneously hearing his work for the first times. Also great input regarding Howlins selflessness and humble nature. A class act, and as I mentioned, someone who truly had the feel that makes blues music, and furthermore legendary blues music, what it was
Man I bet wolf could kick some ass back in the day! 6'5 240lbs, big scary dude playing in all those dives and juke joints, you know nobody messed with him! I know I wouldnt.
From what I have read Wolf didnt play much guitar, but he plays and excellent slide, just enough to sound great, but not to much to sound forced. what an awesome video!
By far the greeat blues singer of all time! And he could play blues harp and slide guitar too. I want to spend the afternoon at his grave near Chicago, leave some flowers, drink bourbon, smoke a cigar, and play his music the whole time.
Danny James I know. It's a shame too... And to think I just saw a video where Lightnin' was introduced in England (playing for the first time?).... and the Brit introducing him didn't even know what R&B was yet haha. The radio plays pretty much 99 percent garbage these days. Popular rappers like riff raff named himself after garbage. And jay z is his own problem out of that 99....
Yes edited as seen on The Howlin' Wolf Story, directed by Don McGlynn, and produced by Joe Lauro (using 16 of my iconic images throughout) and using footage from Historic Films, Inc. ~ SGS
Could anyone here have kindness to transcript the subtitles of the first things Howlin said before signing. I admire and feel so much Howlin Wolf music and voice's hues ( I'd say poetically) but sometimes I can't keep up with his speech, I'm from Havana Cuba, Love from Cuba to everyone.
One of the guitar parts sounds a lot like 'Can't Buy Me Love' by the Beatles. I know they drew their inspiration from a lot of the American bands but it's almost the same.
+UBWoodman it'd been much appreciated to have left the quibbling with Son House in... for me it demonstrates what a decent, artistic and strong person Howlin wolf was: he had like no tolerance for boozin ( robert Johnson , Son House) as it brought so many to the brink and over the brink of destruction... Prohibition didn't do much for the human condition aof alcholism either .
Somehow it didn't strike me that way. Granted, Wolf was good to his band and family but he didn't need to worry with Son House in that clip. It was unbecoming. He should stick to his music. People who know everything and are full of advice are a dime a dozen. BTW Son House lived to the old age of 80 and I loved his blues.
The story on Muddy Waters is, he had to sit in with Son House at a Newport Folk Festival where Eddie was too shitfaced to play. Some of the younger guys made fun of the old-timer but Muddy told them don't nobody talk any shit about old Son.
I saw this as part of a documentary a while ago and it was brilliant, I have tried to find it since and get a copy but no luck, has anyone else found it?

Franz Kafka : This was not a firebird 7 but a 5.
UNDERSTATED-THERE IS A REASON WHY MANY BOOKS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THIS AMERICAN MUSICAL GENIUS!!
A REAL blues man! That voice...
Happy birthday Wolf!!!!!! The best blues singer there everr was....
This mafaka was singing with his whole soul.
its like how geniuses are able to use more of their brain.. howlin had a way to dig out more of his soul and give it to us
+Smoking Cat AMEN!
Love the Wolf!Blessed to have seen the big man!!!!
Much improved version. Wolf's the gold standard. Thanks for posting.
The vocalist that MIck Jagger imitates to this day.

Captian Beefheart! He only sings like Wolf.
I love the Wolf man!! Great tune, also covered by the Stones...
This is from a time when music was fun.
Still can't get over how I didn't know he could even play guitar, never mind slide.. and he slides exactly right.. his pitch is perfect.. What a groove they've got going on here..
Agreed. His playing is very sparing and unostentatious but also pitch perfect.
+Ben Mines perfect example of a true, authentic bluesman.. 'feel'.

D'ont mess with him, Thank him for his immortal musical creative genius, and the way he ran his life, and his business!
Howlin’ Wolf was a great musical one of master of the blues this is would song that he made I can say that I truly love it it is so beautiful

Great ..one and only Howlin Wolf- Down In The Bottom. Thanx
Great clip this is,he was a total one off. When he plays that slide guitar its awesome..
That sax player has a lesson for us all ....
This is awesome. I love how the sax plays only one note, no need to play any other.
He plays more than one note.
alohaila Figuratively speaking.
That one note riff was nothin` but a MOON RIZE...
I could sit and listen to them for eternity 🙏🏼🫡✊🏼
They don't make 'em like they used to.
Danny James I know. It's a shame too...
And to think I just saw a video where Lightnin' was introduced in England (playing for the first time?)....

The radio plays pretty much 99 percent garbage these days.
Popular rappers like riff raff named himself after garbage.
And jay z is his own problem out of that 99....
There was only one Chester Arthur Burnett.
This is just awesome. Sounds like Son House trying to sing in the background at the end
I think he was drunk and kind of trolling on wolf, im trying to find the part where howlin wolf starts calling him a drunk.
The Music lived in him, and he was trying to let it out. 480P video from the 60's got me more chills than any live concert I've actually seen for real
This is awesome! Great slide guitar! Excellent!
The voice is so raw
Simply the best voice of all time.
Simply amazing
Man I love this version of the song year after year

your posts are just so great keep them coming
wow this was recorded the same year I was born..."when I come streakin' by..." The Wolfman!
One of the guitar parts sounds a lot like 'Can't Buy Me Love' by the Beatles. I know they drew their inspiration from a lot of the American bands but it's almost the same.
If you love Wolf try The Howl'in Wolf London Sesions with members of The Stones.
and clapton
Thank you, Seth.
They also left out the part where Howlin argues with Son ..classic
+UBWoodman it'd been much appreciated to have left the quibbling with Son House in... for me it demonstrates what a decent, artistic and strong person Howlin wolf was: he had like no tolerance for boozin ( robert Johnson , Son House) as it brought so many to the brink and over the brink of destruction... +even writenow ..I agree with that totally

Muddy Waters said he owed his start in music to Son House, according to the book "Can't Be Satisfied".
LOVE THIS RUFF AND READY
Meet me in the bottom. Listen to them cords- simple music; we played what was around us and perfected it for ALL to follow. YES/ NO?
I know how he got so good:
"I eats mo' chicken any man seen"
Son House talking shit in the back :)
had no idea that was Son House hahahaha.
He says "I would give him my own (shoes)" something like that! :)
,
Howlin wolf actually humiliates him because of that. Son House deserved it doe, he was drunk and disturbing people :D
I was just about to type the same thing.
Legend 🎩😎👌💥🛫...... 🌪️
UNREAL
Drunk Son House singing off-camera at the end, FTW!
Paul McNamee He rips Son House a new ass later in this video. Wolf didn't mess around.
