This is and has been my very favorite blues song. Despite all of the great blues songs that I have ever heard, I don't see that ever changing. Goosebumps every time.
I am a white Scottish lad born Christmas 1980 I'm 40 now and lived thru the 90s rave and dance music scene which I think everyone did for a time...but deep inside all that speed and fastness I heard the blues and my soul was hooked forever...the doors BB king buddy guy John Lee hooker And SRV...this is what stuck real music real soul...I hated the nineties for my childhood but loved them also because the sadness that came from that time is what makes me feel the blues now or hear them in my heart...life is tough then you die...but heaven awaits every clean soul I believe
I met him when I was a little boy at my Aunt Flora's home in Mississippi he played for us and we danced til we couldn't stand anymore. I love you Uncle Lightnin' and will always remember your wise words.
I somewhat recently got into the blues and I absolutely love it. In researching for blues musicians I came across Lightnin, and the first time I heard his music I told myself "YES, this is how I always imagined the blues". And now he is my favorite blues man. Amazing.
"poor momma sittin' down with a pencil and paper, figurin' out every dime that the family made" Damn this hits home hard. The blues always resonated with me as a dirt poor white man, I think this genre of music transcends race, I think it speaks to all of those at the bottom of our social hierarchy. If you've ever faced poverty, desolation, hunger, hardship or hopelessness then this music seems to capture an essence of those feelings and memories.
Been listening to Lightening for thirty years now... back when blues albums... were hard to get... have listened to a lot of other blues men and women... I always come back to Sam Hopkins.. he has the lazy voice and guitar of a master ... the blues just flow out of him...
it was 1996 when i first heard that song ...it did something in me,i played 100 times to learn it, to get that feeling, from then im with the blues always on my guitar. ol lightnin got that feeling ...the Blues...i love blues!!! sam lightnin hopkins was a legend .
Kept thinking of this song during the recent hot, humid and triple heat index days that went on weeks straight in the MidAtlantic here. What a masterpiece this song is!
As a 35 year old whiteman from Memphis all I wanna do is cry. I listen to this music almost everyday in my man cave. I know this isn't BB King but man I can only imagine. Heart is out
I remember hearing this as a kid my dad was and still is a huge Lightin fan I didnt want to hear this at the time... You grow up an experience some real blues you appreciate thsngs like this.... Thank you for the post
It s funny how only so few can find this music, and if your lucky enough to find it. Enjoy it and appreciate what a talent he his and how real this is. Mainstream music these days just dont have a clue! Rappers need to shut up and listen to something real.
ought to work but now that i discoverd them good old bluesmen i keep on drinkin with my own satisfaction to lightin's art and them good men dead and gone from the delta. i'm doggone glad to see that this bs website brings across so much great music such as this. respect to them who still appreciate this art and puttin it on the intranet makes me glad as hell. there is mercy for an alcoholic goddamit i love it.
In the fifties 100 pounds of cotton sold for 3 to 4 dollars. Now in case you didn't know that is a hell of a lot of fluffy white balls. You'd work from early in the mornin' dragging a 9 foot cotton sack behind you. You work in the mornin' so dew's still on the plants and it makes 'em weigh more.
im not much for posting twice on a video, i know alot of blues but this has to be one of the best blues songs that has ever been written. you can feel everything that is the blues in this song. lightnin is one of the top blues singers that will ever live. thank you for posting this never take it down
40 years since I first heard this recording. (And I still have the vinyl.) Perfect phrasing then, still is, and he was pissed at his rhythm section, as always. You can't beat this shit.
whoever made this video to this song is a damn genius!!! it fits perfect. i love the railroad picture at the end. it makes me want to take a road trip.
Slowed down blues is some of my favorite and really takes me back to the origins of the blues. You can feel the expression on a different level. I’ll forever be a blues baby
mmmmmmmmmm .......... i love it.... he is one of my favorites.... its just so easy to listen..... mmmmmmmmm........ just close your eyes n let the music hit your mind
I used to have a live version of this on tape back in the 80s from some now-obscure anthology, As I recall Lightnin' was complaining about the sound while playing, there was no bassist, and there was an extra verse about getting mixed up in some gambling game. Don't have it now, but it must be out there somewhere, good luck in tracing it.
This is and has been my very favorite blues song. Despite all of the great blues songs that I have ever heard, I don't see that ever changing. Goosebumps every time.
Ole Lighting Hopkins and Chester The Howling Wolf Burnett. Yessah

I somewhat recently got into the blues and I absolutely love it. In researching for blues musicians I came across Lightnin, and the first time I heard his music I told myself "YES, this is how I always imagined the blues". And now he is my favorite blues man. Amazing.
this music is what happens when someone has expeienced life and absorbed it to the bone. An expression of life. we dont have this in music anymore.
"poor momma sittin' down with a pencil and paper,
figurin' out every dime that the family made"

white supremacy is a distraction to keep the white poor from noticing they aren't much better off
