Cool video. I worked on the A-7D when I was stationed at Korat, Thailand. We were part of Operation Linebacker II during Christmas of 1972. We worked around the clocked to keep those pilots flying during that time.
Same here only I was aboard the USS Oriskany which is featured in this video during Linbacker 1 and 2 with VA155. We had A7Bs. We did some serious landscaping back then. Too bad they wouldn't let us win.
Last of the gunfighter at that time. After that cannon and machine-guns started being phased out, and for a long while, too. There were exceptions, of course. But the Corsair II was purposely built as an air superiority fighter, close in dogfighter. Dogfighting was losing favorite because of some stupid backward thinking. Glad that changed.
After returning home from the Navy I worked at LTV Aerospace on Avionics upgrades to the F-8 Crusader. This was early on in the production of A7s. They were outfitted and tested in the same hangers we used. In addition, while I was growing up Vought also produced the F4U Corsair.
When I was in college, I used to sit at the park at the south end of the runway in Grand Prairie (NAS Dallas)...the Vought factory is there....saw many of these..very cool! Thanks for the video!
Great work DroneScapes as always ! Be safe in the New Year to all your team ! I was a crew member of the VA-146 " Blue Diamonds " flying the A-E's Corsair 2 off the USS Constellation and later on as a civilian building the F14 Tomcats, A6E Intruders, EA6B Prowlers and EF-111 Aardvarks for Grumman Aerospace Corp. on Long Island, New York for 16+ years. The A7-E is still my favorite, built like a tank and never failed in it's mission !
USN, 68-74, ETR-2, NAS Miramar, 70-74, I maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN. Got to see LOTS of these girls. One jock even got one off the ground briefly with the wings folded.
My best friend ever and I attended high school and jr. college together ... he graduated valedictorian of our HS class. We both got into naval aviation and he ended up assigned to a carrier A-7 squadron that deployed to Vietnam. We were in touch and he informed me that the Navy had rushed the A-7 into full service before it had been thoroughly tested and he had encountered some issues. His squadron was assigned to attack a N. Vietnam supply station in Laos and as they approached the target, he radioed his wingmen that problems were popping up. Quickly after that, his aircraft suddenly burst into flames and blew up before he could eject. His remains have never been recovered.
Interestingly, we almost didn't get the A-7 Corsair II. Grumman had floated a proposal of essentially a "shrunken" A-6 Intruder that could have met the same role.
Whatever you are using to filter the video, is NOT increasing video quality. It is better let the original files unchanged and just edit them to fit the narrative.
Constructive feedback: I understand the thought process in "cleaning up" the raw footage, but the processes used on this particular video obliterated the fine details and gave the final video a cartoonish quality which is distracting. Not everything needs to be sharpened, stabilized, and color corrected.
@@ZaphodHarkonnen I think they didn't check their work on a monitor large enough to notice, which is fine for the 50% watching on their phones, but in 4k it looks like warm garbage.

For anyone watching this and it's the first time you've heard of the F-8u3 I hope you see this comment. The info on the F-8u3 in this video was absolute crap. Lol on the "outdated compared to the F-4" part. It also carried the Sparrow missile but I think it was only 3 vs 4 on the Phantom. It allegedly reached a max speed of Mach 2.6 but officially it's clocked at Mach 2.39, the beautiful and almighty F-14 "officially" pegged it at 2.34... It was faster and MUCH more agile than the F-4 the big reason given why it wasn't selected over the F-4 was due to crew workload. They said it would overload the pilot having to fly, navigate AND work the radar run the missile shot etc since the F-4 had a RIO it made it doable. That's apparently bullshit as well since Vought had a mock cockpit that was designed to be broken down to travel around to places. They made sure to let people see for themselves by getting into the interactive cockpit that they had a VERY WELL DESIGNED cockpit and it wouldn't be difficult at all for the single seat F-8u3 to run Sparrow intercepts.
I have never understood why people think this aircraft is ugly. "Thick", maybe. Ugly? No way. Of course, I also think the P-47D is the prettiest WWII aircraft, edging the P-51D by about a half-point. so... :)
In nearly 40 years of military aviation research this is the first time I've heard the Cutlass referred to as successful, hell just in general this video is giving people the impression it was a good "cutting edge" fighter as safe/dangerous as every other aircraft of the time. The gutless Cutlass looked cool but it wasn't a success and had a shit ton of flaws. The F-8 Crusader was Vought's last chance after the Pirate then Cutlass.
Been there done that Naval Air Wing Reserve 20 A-7E VA-203,V 1987 we took on the US Airforce at Luke AirForce base and flew against F15's . The first week after airforce was loosing it really began pissing off the base CO at Luke so hegot his senior avaitors to go against these retired airline pilots w/ who had a minimun 3,000 hrs flight time with over 1,000 landing BOURD CARRIERS They smoked eagles as the A-7 gave chase and the f-15 broke across the field at the end of the exersise...Once senior Airforce f-15 drivers showed up then it became a different story and the A-7 was the one to break field with F-15 as victors
The A-6 was intended to be superseded by the McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger II, but this program was ultimately canceled due to cost overruns. Thus, when the A-6E was scheduled for retirement, its precision strike mission was initially taken over by the Grumman F-14 Tomcat equipped with a LANTIRN pod.
The A-6 did not replace the A-7. And I don't need exclamation points to say that. The A-7 was intended to replace the A-4, which was the light attack aircraft. The A-6 was all weather attack, and it flew long before the light attack A-7 did. The F-18 replaced them both.
@@gort8203 I was THERE!! I was on the flight deck for the last A-7 squadrons, and their replacement by the A-6 squadrons. @@ldkbudda4176 This is patently FALSE!! I was there, on the flight decks of several carriers. The A-7 squadrons were canceled. A-6 squadrons replaced them. Many A-7 pilots DID go into the F-18 training pipeline, while the A-6 squadrons REPLACED the A-7s on the carrier decks. The F-14 provided a GAP role as a FAST ATTACK aircraft; the A-7 was NEVER a fast attack aircraft!! The A-6 provided a perfect replacement for the A-7, except the A-6 was also approaching end of service life. The A-6 was more effective as an attack aircraft than the A-7; longer range, more payload, much better accuracy! I verified this by talking to the A-7 and A-6 pilots and BNs. But the A-6 was the replacement for the A-7 until the F/A-18 C/D came online.

The upscaling software you use in some scenes is substandard and distracting. Good content, some inaccuracies but overall a great effort.

My guess is they've used an AI/ML model to try and upscale the footage. Works fine for the diagrams. Falls over on the video.

I believe a Zuni rocket if not a Zuni some other type of unguided rocket . Fins are folded when in the round launching pod
Zuni rocket from a dual-pod on an F-8 Crusader.
The F-8 could carry four pods with a total of eight zunis on cheek rails or four AIM-9s.
