    Grateful to NASA for looking 'up' always. Man looks down and down upon others. But NASA leads the humanity with the 'giant leap' they gave in 1969. Continue to lead this mankind.

      No one knows, but it's probably got something to do with the way our brain tries to make sense of what we're looking at.
      Why does the moon look so much bigger when it is near the horizon?

    I'm not a scientist or anything, but what if the moon illusion works like a magnifying glass? Earth has a lot of spheres in its atmosphere, right? What if the many spheres of Earth, also combining atmospheric refraction, warp at the horizon point creating a 'convex lens,' thus making the moon and sun appear "magnified? " The spheres might have something else not visible to the human eyes, or at least a hidden factor. Just a thought... the birds might be able to see it. lol They are good like that! =')

    Wasn't there a fourth one on October 8th, 2014? This video only addresses three: July, August and September. Another blood moon just occurred, and with it both a lunar and solar eclipse.

    No super moon on July 10th. For me it is on the night of July 12th. Looking in the sky right now and seeing a big and bright full moon pretty much proves my statement.

    It's sad when someone can post a video of them doing something stupid on youtube and it goes viral in 24 hours with millions of views, but, yet, a video about a natural beauty in the sky dubbed "A Super Moon" from Nasa only gets 107,000 views in 3 days.

    • @RFGfotografie

      That's always the same. Smart things/people get barely any attention, while stupid people always get all the attention. It's always been that way since the tv was invented.

      but you are talking about humans soooooo you really shouldnt be surprised at all, i mean why would u want morons to watch such beauty anyways, it will spoil the beauty and the original only stays in your mind until you die and it dies off with u, by the way i bet you the comment section would be filled with conspiracies and religious beliefs anyways, quality over quantity :)

    sorry.. but the statement about not knowing the true reason as to why a low hanging moon looks larger is.. well bogus.
    there is a reason. It because when the moon is low on the horizon its line of sight has to pass through more of the earths atmosphere causing a magnifying effect.
    :-)
    regardless. i cant wait to see these full moons in all their gorgeous splendor!
    :-)

  • @robertheitzler9547

    Why would the illusion of a larger moon low on the horizon not be well understood? It would seem to me that the atmosphere, water vapor, and to a small extent, the gravitational & magnetic fields of the earth would increase the size of a low hanging moon the same way a lens does. That is why these lower hanging moons have an overall lower per pixel luminosity and tend to shift to the red-er ends of the spectrum (Doppler effect of angle of the moon to the observational point on the earth). It would stand to reason that this should be well understood.

    Its interesting that the Vedic Religion (Hinduism branched from this) has worshiped the Guru or Giver of Bliss, on the full moon in July as a Purnima moon. They somehow knew this moon was special. Guru Purnima has been a day of worship for centuries.

    Neil deGrasse Tyson made the best comment about the super moon, noting the small difference percentage. He said something to the effect of:
    If you have a 16 inch pizza, would you call that a super pizza compared with a 15 inch pizza? :-D
    The funniest thing I ever saw was on my local news station just last year, reporting a "super moon" that you would be able to see the lunar landing sites with a backyard telescope because it would be so close! OMG! This was on television and my local newspaper, both obviously drawn from the internet by someone who knew nothing about astronomy or telescopes. To top it off, I went to work the next day, and one of my compulsive liar friends who had seen this report pretended to see the Tranquility Base site with his kid's telescope! (epic fail).
    I enjoy hearing people get excited about astronomical events, but we should keep it in perspective, and definitely out of the realms of fiction!

      @JuliaJune96 10 лет назад +4

      I'm sure NASA has more important things to do than get together a spectacular 3 minute video on the Supermoon. Many people don't even care for astronomy sadly, and this voice actor works just fine. :)

    • @StopRandomTV
      @StopRandomTV 10 лет назад

      I'm sure NASA has the money to get a decent development team to enhance their online presence tenfold, it would be a worthy investment for them in my opinion.

      Progress requires resources and most of it comes out the peoples taxes, with the money that has been wasted on wars, it would have been better on finding out whether their truly is life elsewhere...if their is I will want a ticket to that planet lol God, I do hope we are not missing anything especially a 100 light years away! THEIR IS LIFE OUT THERE I feel it in my bones.

    • @Neueregel

    • @lmpeters
      @lmpeters 10 лет назад +1

      Since the moon is closer at perigee, its gravity would have a stronger influence on Earth, but not by much. It can result in higher tides, but no other effects would be visible to the unaided eye.

    • @acassiopeia6439
      @acassiopeia6439 10 лет назад +1

      Whether or not the moon is full has nothing to do with it's gravitational strength. That's a matter of distance only. At perigee the moon is around 43,000km closer to the earth than it is at apogee, however, it's still about 363,000km away at it's closest approach (perigee). Considering it has a much smaller mass than the earth, and is so far away, we won't notice any difference at all. The only effect we are really likely to notice at all are tidal effects, and they'll be consistent with the tides at other lunar perigees.
