    Pixar's writers had a heck of a time convincing Disney to let them make this movie. Disney was concerned about merchandise sales, that no one would want to buy a toy of an old man, but I'm so glad the creative team held their ground and made it happen.

      I loved how they made it about an old man. You don't really see this type of main character in movies ESSPECIALLY catered to children. An old man, A super father in a nuclear family, a bug, a toy, a monster, a fish (who's also a father), and so on

      Yes!

    • @20000dino
      @20000dino 3 года назад +186

      I actually don't think it's nearly as simple as that....
      Russell's childhood is essentially the opposite of Carl's. Carl was shy, awkward and more of an observer, but had always someone who got his back and who actively showed how much she loved him (initially as a friend, of course). Russell is outgoing, positive and likes to participate, but he is utterly alone: his mom is gone, and both his dad and step mom don't give him the time of day. But, as children, both Carl and Russell have one thing in common: they love adventure.
      So, by the end of the film, when they learn to love and accept each other, they give each other what the other needs. Carl assumes the role of a parental figure, outwardly showing how much he loves and cares for Russell (especially in the scouts ceremony). Russell rekindles Carl's love for adventure and, more importantly, for life, something he had lost ever since his wife died.
      Russel is basically the child IN Carl.

      Ellie is the house. Her spirit lives inside it. That’s why the balloons lasted so long-they represent the strength of their relationship. And why the kid stashed away underneath the house-he was the kid Ellie always wanted, giving him to Carl. It also explains why Muntz died the way he did-the house and the balloons killed him. Ellie wasn’t about to let Carl and the kid die, not if she could help it.

    This movie gets me every time. I saw an alternate fan theory a couple years ago where they said that Carl was the one who passed, not Ellie. The adventure represents his "heaven". Russel is representative of the child they lost and placing the house at the falls was Carl making good on his promise to Ellie. He didn't know about her completing "The Adventure Book" because she finished it after he had passed and placed it in the casket. Made it a totally different and even more wonderful movie to me.

    Russell briefly mentions Phyllis. When Carl asks him why he calls his mother Phyllis, Russell says that Phyllis is not his mother and doesn't go into any further detail. Phyllis must be the woman seen at the end. So is she like a nanny or foster parent? I doubt she is a stepmother since his father is not around. So sadly, it seems his mother had died earlier.

    • @Chemeleon15
      @Chemeleon15 3 года назад

      Another comment suggests that Phyllis is the Stepmom and that she’s the reason that his father is rarely around. The woman you see later is probably just his Mother, who has divorced his father.

    • @suebob16
      @suebob16 3 года назад

      @@Chemeleon15 That is an interesting possibility as well. Because Russell didn't say anything about his mother, I wasn't sure . It would be nice to think that the woman at the end is his mother. Russell was longing for a male role model, so it's great that Carl stepped in.
