- CVA Optima V2 Muzzleloader Review and Test.
In this video we go over the features of the CVA Optima stainless steel muzzleloader. We also take it out to the controlled range and test its performance. The CVA Optima is a great budget friendly muzzleloader that is known for it accuracy and reliability.
Modeled after CVA’s top-of-the-line ACCURA® V2, OPTIMA® V2 rifles and pistols feature the same trigger-guard actuated breeching lever, internal parts, and trigger. All Optima V2 rifle models featured in the CVA catalog and on the CVA website feature stainless steel or Nitride-treated stainless steel barrels. Add in CVA’s Quick-Release Breech Plug (which is finger removable), 100% ambidextrous stock, and a CrushZone® recoil pad, and you’ve got a gun with more quality features than any other muzzleloading rifle in its price range. Equipped with a 26” or 28” barrel, the OPTIMA® V2 is easy to maneuver in the treestand and comfortable to carry in the mountains. And it comes standard with a DuraSight® DEAD-ON™ one-piece scope mount or DuraSight® fiber optic sights, and CVA’s solid aluminum PalmSaver™ ramrod.

Low Pressure 50 Caliber Smokeless Loads in a 209 Factory Muzzleloader, 2 DVD set | eBay
These 2 DVDs contain a demonstration of using Low Pressure Smokeless Loads in a 50 caliber factory muzzleloader.
I know this is a old video but just wanted to say you should not take the brass jag off when seating the polymer tip bullets because your pushing straight down on the tip of the bullet if you do and it can cause the tip to be deformed and hurt accuracy. That’s why new bullet starters now come with different tips depending on type of bullets used.great videos you always give so much information. Be safe and live free
Ordered one today thanks for your review
Thank you
You can get rid of the hollow sound of the stock by filling it full of cloth. It's weather tight so you won't get moisture up in it. Anything cloth (I just used on old shirt) can be removed if you need to remove the stock.
Good idea
Good idea.
Good video. My optima is on the Mail heading my way. Can’t wait to go out and hopefully harvest my first buck with a muzzleloader tag.
Great! Hope you have good luck with it.
Did you kill one ?
Have an old style T/C Impact, which is great. Ordered the Optima given the price point and quick breech plug. Have heard nothing but good things for the most part.
Good stuff
That's what I was thinking this looked like so are there different barrels that could be swapped ?
Good stuff. Well done. You answered a question I had in another video. Thank you.
No problem
Nice shooting! Great info on the SST.
Thanks
Good review mate
Cheers
Rob
Thank you
If you still have the muzzleloader i suggest looking into thor hammer lightning bullets. They are full bore bullets with a pellet like skirt that when the powder ignites swells out the skirt into the rifling and makes a very nice fit to the bore. If you have a .50 barrel might as well use all of it with the bullets. I never really understood why they decided to make a .50 cal rifle and fire .45 cal bullets through them wrapped in a plastic cup. The skirted bullet technology has been around in air rifles for decades, why didnt they start making more full bore .50 cal bullets? Way more grain to be utilized and more grain means better stability in most cases and more kinetic energy.
great review
THank you
Great video!
I’m about to do a review and wanted to get some other opinions.👍
Thanks
I'm shooting Barnes tmz 250 grain bullet with 100 grains whitehots I hav the black barrel an I hav to clean mine after every shot due to fouling to keep the accuracy true with every shot been out 1 time with it an already harvested a doe
Nice video!! The only question I had you didn't answered was how to safely unload it once ready to shoot. Also, what iron sight will you recommend?
You have to either shoot it or remove the threaded primer plug and push the charge out the front
The end of your rod you can get bullet pushers that fit your bullet and keeps from messing up the tip of your bullets you can get a kit that has brass tips that fit hollow point bullets and some for polymer tip bullets they are like four different ones for different types of bullets and they come in a zip up bag made of nylon fabric that will go on your belt .
Thank you
How do I tell if my cva optima v2 is magnum rated? It did come with the scope
Funny. Never heard of Toad's Black Powder Cleaner. Wonder if it's not just some liquid with green food coloring? Heard of so many black powder users, using ammonia based cleaners; and wouldn't be surprised if the product were made of something related.
Hard to find the open sights version in Canada
Great video. Just an FYI, don't use your Torque Wrench to loosen, it is not good for them. I have a Wheeler drive kit that I use as well as the Fat Wrench. Have a great hunting season.
Thanks for watching
Can You buy one of those rifles with a 1 in 48 twist barrel ?
That's good shooting for steal sights you get a scope on that and you will be shooting some tight groups at 💯 yards and that rifle is good for 300 yards easily and that's a fact!
I just picked up one of the first generation optima
Nice
@@Bullets4Bucks it didn't have a breech plug but I found a couple different places that has them
Lube it good
The new rifles don't allow the jag to be screwed into the end of the rod opposite the palm swell. You have to remove the palm swell to screw the jag into that end. I'm not sure I like that feature.
13:04 When you remove the jag, are you sure you have enough rod to seat the load properly? It seems the rod may be bottoming out at the palm saver. Your thoughts?
It comes to a stop just before it hits the palm saver. It is close though
How well is the SS barrel resisting rust/corrosion
So far very well
I’m knew to the sport and have not yet decided which rifle to buy. I thought these rifle took 209 shotgun primers. You mentioned small pistol primers . Is that correct.
No i was incorrect you are correct they use 209s
Yeah, you'll definitely whant shotshell 209 primers
I just bought this today. My daughter shot her cow elk a couple hours ago with it. Not bad.
Awesome!! Congrats on the cow. I just went trying to find a cow elk today! No luck though
Have CVA Optima 10+ yrs changed birch plug for BlackHorn 209 powder, many year it worked fine . Now the primer (shot shell) get stuck in Brich plug. Any thoughts.
Hmmmm.... not sure. I assume you have tried cleaning it well
@@Bullets4Bucks till it shines.
If your using European shotshell primers the cheddite etc 1000-2000 size are a couple thousandths of a inch over the size of say Remington, CCI federal and such.
I own four different CVA's everything from Wolf to Accura PR and LR and CVA does not recommend sabot rounds because the plastic fowls the rifling for the best performance use powerbelt with black horn powder and with my Paramount and LR rifles use ELR bullets with an LR barrel make sure the rifling matches the bullet.
Yeah you are not wrong but so far I haven't had many issues with the sabot.
That's because they also sell their own bullets. I have had bad luck with powerbelts and use Barnes bullets with a sabot. Excellent accuracy, expansion, and blood trails.
@@TScottW99 And really push those white pellet things...
@@alexgutierrez3500 the imr white hots
How accurate was the iron sights out of the box?
As accurate as I am
I did not find the Toad Barrel cleaner on Amazon
Its not on there
I'm assuming their is a way to disarm this if one decides not to shoot a round ?
Yes sir, take 209 primer out of breech plug, unscrew said breech plug and then use your ramrod and push bullet and powder out the breech,
Remove breech plug and drop out pellets. Then push the bullet through the barrel. Or you can just remove the primer and leave the rest loaded, just keep in mind that the pellets will eventually start eating away at your barrel.
@@Shawnwyatt101😎
What's your sabot and powder of choice
My is black horn
Make sure this guy doesn't borrow your tools. Taking out a screw with a calibrated torque driver. Thats a new one for me.
You did not just pick up those pellets with your hands 🤣 that red pipe cleaner (you probably threw away) is made for picking them up. The oils on your hands play a part in the accuracy and the powder burning like it should.
I know... but I totally did lol
@@Bullets4Bucks go grab a bottle of blackhorn 209, federal shotshell 209 primers, and the blackhorn 209 breech plug. I killed a doe at 315 yards last year with my Optima v2, BH 209 powder, federal shotshel, BH209 breech, 300gr Hornady SST. With that setup you can clean the gun with 1 wet and 1 dry patch or 3 dry patches. I can also get 6 consecutive shots before cleaning.
@@braxtonwallace8458 nice!
My barrel got a hairline crack on the inside about 10 inches from the breech after about 20 shots..
Wow thats horrible
@Bullets4Bucks granted it was the first version. Since it isn't in production anymore I only get a discount on a new one.
Not pistol primer. 209 shotshell primer.
You are right. I spoke out my a%& lol
YOU USE 2 100 GRAIN 777 PELLETS I DON'T THINK SO DUDE!! THERE EITHER 50'S AS IN THIS CASE OR 60'S WITH THE MAGNUMS. LETS GET IT RIGHT PLEASE. YOUR AN EXPERT.
Two 50's
Cleaning jag not jig. A jig is a dance .we are at the range today. Friday night is dance night.
lol you got me
I use a jig fishing 😃
I thought Jag was a tv show about the Naval court system. We are cleaning our muzzleloader while we watch JAG tonight.
It is "SABO" silent "T" !! A Sabot is a wooden shoe !!
You are correct
Nobody cares!! Just saying.
I will never waist my money on anything cva.
Stop touching your powder with your bare hands. The pellets should've come with a pipe cleaner.
