a lack of reading also makes me feel dumb lol, after so much tiktok and reels my personal vocabulary is suffering so ive been forcing myself to read this month
Me omg I’ve been trying to get my vocabulary up so much, although I do think context clues was a pivotal part of my learning so I haven’t struggled too bad but retaining some meanings suck so bad
i swear, despite the good gems and up to date content in that app made me lose my focus. it might also add the made up terms everyone using all of the sudden to avoid banning, slowly messing up my vocabulary.
Same here. I've been seeing a lot of tiktoks about anti intellectualism that I had to delete the app so I can actually focus on reading books, and research topics I feel passionate about 😭
it’s always a good day when the algae-rhythm permits me to discover another channel with immaculate taste, good luck on all your fall reading endeavors! can’t wait to hear your thoughts on all of these!
I’ve been binging your vids bec they’re such a breath of fresh air! So genuine, stylish, and with a point of view every time. On top of being funny and articulate and just very cool. You’re a gem! So excited for your next updates 🩷🩷🩷
i just love how you word and describe things, it’s quite an art. Being an intellectual comes in whatever form you see fit, keep up the amazing work babesssss
Thank you for the recommendations💓 adding them to my list. On my TBR are “Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear: Poems from Gaza” by Mosab Abu Toha, “Reclaiming Our Space: How Black Feminists Are Changing the World from the Tweets to the Streets” by Feminista Jones, “How the West Stole Democracy from the Arabs” by Elizabeth F. Thompson, “Salt Houses” 🇵🇸 novel by Hala Alyan, and “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding
Reading Dostoevsky feels like a flex on how many somewhat similar names you can remember. I have When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole and The Wives by Tarryn Fisher on my Thriller/Crime TBR and I feel like you would really enjoy The Story of the Night by Colm Toibin which does touch on HIS/AIDS but is also about living in Argentina in the 70s/80s/90s.
I just read the brothers karamazov as my first Dostoevsky and I would really recommend because a lot of it has a humor and earnestness to it that’s pretty nice!!! Like despite a lot of things it’s just funny and it’s also kinda mystery but not really mystery of a murder so u may like that and tbh there was a point where I stopped reading it for a few days, coincidentally before the one famous grand inquisitor Jesus chapter, but once I got through that I read the rest so so quickly, I think it’s funny with heart so even if u don’t think crime and punishment is all that u should try the bros still 😂💜
Yeeeeees also the idiot is really good! I read c&p first, then tbk and the idiot and tbh I would recommend the idiot as a first Dostoevsky read bc it was really enjoyable and the ending made my jaw DROP
First Lie Wins is a mystery/ thriller I read earlier this year and it was so good!! It surprised me how much I enjoyed it. Got me more into mystery genre
I’m also working through crime and punishment right now!! It’s been a PROJECT, notes/annotating very much helps to keep the story straight in my brain lmao. Love your videos!! :))
coming back to comment 7 hours later because i got sidetracked by life but i just wanna say that i love your reading lists esp bc we have v similar tbr's and i get to add more books to my list! i have no idea when i'll actually get around to reading them (currently in a slump, have a bunch of physical books i still need to read LMAO) but i'm excited.... i also kinda just really enjoy adding books to my list anyway supah supah supersonic supersonic we love fromis
I'm currently reading The great good places and I believe it mentions the Jane Jacobs book when talking about urbanism it's a book about third places and the problem with social life in America
i'm hoping to get into disability theory by tobin siebers, finishing up i who have never known men, and hoping for some good fiction this fall and winter as a break from theory too.
the sluts was the craziest novel i've read... really reminded me of the kind of stuff (not as extreme in content but in vibes) that I'd read in forums when the internet was in its early forums/threads era. absolutely sick and twisted
@@JESYCU girl...... i have so many feelings about it and in a way i felt morally conflicted over how fast i finished it because i found it really hard to put down - def not a "splatterpunk" enjoyer (or whatever genre it is) but i found the like web forum format super digestible and easy to get through like reading a super long reddit rabbithole or something. subject matter is obviously horrible and i let out a sigh of relief when it was finally over and everything came to light LMAO??? and even though it was horrible to read i still appreciated the like. commentary about anonymity and how the lines of fantasy and reality get blurred online and i guess the subtext about sex work (that one might be a stretch and me projecting my own feelings about the sex industry onto cooper's writing lol). i feel like the subtext/commentary about the internet is super topical today and its crazy that it still holds up in that respect LOL, maybe even more so now than in the days of aol :P IDK..... it's definitely a doozy and while i wouldn't recommend it to anyone i did start his George Miles' cycle so i couldn't have hated it That much if ykwim :P TLDR when i logged it on goodreads i had to do it with the asterisk of like ... " i'm appreciating it for the non-explicit social commentary rather than the actual story of brad pls dont think im a freak" lol. omg so rambly sorry. looking forward to ur future review
I honestly hope some doctorate psychiatrist is out there studying the modern day book addict. Cause "reading now feels like this thing that I have to do." Why are we like this!?
@@JESYCUI like it so far but I don’t get too heavy into marketing so that I won’t miss good literature over disappointment 😅 also...read diverse books, in translation by women. Consider you may have misunderstood or it’s something lost in translation. The US barely translates compared for others, the book needs the reviews if you’re up for it 😊
I haven’t read Dostoevsky yet but definitely give classics another chance! I recommend Jane Eyre and The House of Mirth, both v readable and fairly fast paced. For non-classics I recommend Milkman by Anna Burns, one of my all times favs.. some people were super thrown off by the writing style but I feel like you would enjoy it. I hope you do 🫶🏼 Also not what you asked for at all but The Hunger Games trilogy! Trust me on this lol I read it for the first time this month and im obsessedddd obsessed!

kanae minato has another book titled penance it is so good i honestly liked it more than confessions .Please check the trigger warnings it contains a lot of heavy topics.
Japanese crime//thriller rec -- Out by Natsuo Kirino Currently reading and it's so so good think you might like. Murder story of a wife who kills her abusive husband and the aftermath when her factory coworkers help her dispose the body. It keeps you reading and wanting more - think murakami but with like actually well written and thoughtful female characters 😮 also love ur videos could listen to you all day
i recommend 'who is maud dixon?' i enjoyed it and it's a really fun thriller imo also looove reading your suggestions you rlly know how to sell a book lol
I actually didn't like Devotion of Suspect X that much compared to the other books in this series, which are honestly really great mysteries. IMO Salvation of a Saint (in that series) had the much more interesting "twist," even if you know who the actual murderer is pretty early on. If you don't mind a mystery that's a little (a lot) gorier, then Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter was also riveting. If you like a mystery from a historical angle, The Poison Thread by Laura Purcell, The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova (my favorite, if you liked The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt this might be for you), or the Miss Fisher Mystery series if you're looking for more of a low-stakes good time kind of romp lol. And a more literary mystery might be Minor Detail by Adania Shibli (about Palestine under occupation). My fall TBR is a few rereads (Rebecca, Persuasion, Wuthering Heights), House of Leaves, The Unworthy by Augustina Bazterrica, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters (or generally any SW books), 09/09 09/09 : Nine Japanese Female Poets / Nine Heian Waka by Naoko Fujimoto, and Private Rites by Julia Armfield
