when i first created my channel i constantly asked: how much do small youtubers make? how much do you make in your first 6 months? how do they grow? so now that i am starting to figure out the answers, i thought i would share what i have learned!
i love these videos and thought i would make one myself sharing my growth journey on youtube. all the time i wish i knew when my favorite creators got monetized, how they grew, and when they hit certain milestones, so i thought i would create a video highlighting that for myself.

This is easily the most authentic/ realistic view into a small RUclipsrs road to getting monitized. The two gals you mentioned that blew up in 2020 are great examples of combination of talent, hard work and luck. And most RUclips journeys aren’t like that. My growth on here is akin to your first year: slow but gradual . You’ve really inspired me to stay on track and keep going. I’m hoping my hard work and consistency will get me monitized in the next 6 months or so. Just gotta keep going.?Appreciate your insights sooo much!

The trick to RUclips I think is the creator themselves being watchable. Some put out good content but they themselves are dry or dull or boring. I wouldn't choose to watch again. Youre one of the charismatic creators, I come back for *you* with the content being the bonus. Youre always entertaining, like Jenna Marbles back in the day

10000%. so many tech/YT gurus give advice on how to grow but most of the time miss the simple (but significant) fact that people come back for your PERSONALITY.
Wow I just realized this. I do that too. I watch my favorite RUclipsrs even if they show me how to do something I already know 😂 yes! Because of their personality. I love this 🥰
This is a great comment. I agree the vlogger has to be interesting. However some group content creators (such as a family) they can get away with it if one or two members are dull/boring as they have others to fall back on. Solo creators have to work harder.
The fact that she is very attractive also helps I think
it's really discouraging when you work on a video for 20+ hours and only gets 60 views haha. but these videos keeps me motivated. not bc of the monetization, but the community that comes with the channel's growth. btw, i subbed to you last month, bc the vids are so aesthetic. im still yet to binge watch the apartment series!!

It's really great seeing creators be so open and honest about things like that. When I first started RUclips, back in 2016, I took a long break because of college and I was debating on coming back, because things weren't going well. It was challening for me, being Greek and doing content in English, but I was like, you're doing this for you, because you enjoy it, so get back there and post what makes you happy. At first, I was so nervous, I was so shut down, it wasn't until I let myself be free and post more relaxed, that I saw difference. I'm not making figures, but the videos are doing well, and that makes me the happiest. Alexis, your vibe is really wonderful, I'm definately gonna stick around.

I also work from home and even with that advantage, recording, editing, researching and learning constantly can get complicated but it's very rewarding. Great job & you deserve to keep growing fast!

Yeah it’s super important! Otherwise we just start to think about views, money, popularity, etc. When we’re connect to our “why,” however, there’s a lot of fulfillment no matter how much money we’re making or views we get 😊

that's really good advice about just putting out content that is authentic to you and makes you happy. I did one video a week for 6 months before I stopped so I understand getting discouraged. I guess I didn't get past my 50 bad videos phase lol. Rooting for you. Who knows, by this time next year you could be living off your content!

This is very motivating and enlightening. I started my channel about 10 years ago mostly for personal use. Gathered about 34 subscribers in that time period. Started taking this channel a little more seriously in November and within 2 weeks that 34 turned to 100 subscribers. In a couple more weeks I hit 500 subscribers. Not doing this for the money but it is interesting seeing your journey. Love love this video 😁

This is fantastic, I’ve often wondered what it looks like to be monetized in those early days. You’ve basically just described my story starting from nothing and organically trying to grow a channel just doing the things I enjoy. I’ve met all requirements except for 1000 subscribers, I am getting discouraged because I already have two other jobs and this does take time.

I really enjoyed this because not a lot of RUclipsrs are this open and transparent. It’s great for people who want to start a YT like me, it gives us a realistic idea of everything. People make it seem like they start RUclips within 2 months they are already making like buckets of money and that’s just not realistic

So much decorating and reorganizing you can do in a studio apartment. The idea of living in Manhattan appeals to your viewers. What about the challenges of living in a small space in an ultra expensive city. How do you stretch your dollars? How hard is it to find affordable places? What’s it like living in a space with limited views & limited fresh air? How do you adjust to the street noise? Just throwing out some ideas… 😁
I totally agree! I think if she made vlogs of how much it costs her to live in New York, a lot of people would be interested! Or even posting her favorite things to do or favorite views of the city, just stuff like that! Which could also be turned into tiktoks which could attract more attention to her as a creator!

Hi Alexis, I just monetized 2 weeks ago and was looking for case studies like yours with less than 10K subscribers and what they are making and their CPM's. Thanks for sharing. You may want to experiment with a few more financial-related topics (as part of your normal life as you did here) and see if you can get higher CPM on those videos. Some of my videos are getting CPM's of over $50 which is a huge boost to offset my lower viewed videos. However, I got a long ways to go before I hit your 9K subscriber mark. I have not yet gotten a full month's of data but I am looking forward to what my first 30-days of data & revenue will look like. Great video!

This is so true! It only took me 6 months to monetize my food and travel channel, but boy, it was a rough time just seeing my videos not getting views despite how much time I poured into it. You say everything really well and capture the right feel for small RUclipsrs when starting out. It's not easy but if you love creating content and help people in your own ways, it is just so rewarding! RUclips recommended this one video but it was enough for me to like your simple and honest style. I wish you success in the future. You have inspired me to make a video just like this telling others about my journey too. For other small RUclipsrs, please don't give up! Just post at least 1 video a week. That's it! Improve each time and success will come. I promise you!

Your efforts are very much appreciated. I am an FAA licensed Commercial Pilot who recently started a RUclips channel to share my love of flying. I only have one subscriber, and have only had one comment, but I get a great deal of pleasure and personal fulfillment out of the sharing, and I have really enjoyed learning more about actual video editing. I probably never will get to where you are right now, but that's OK. I'm doing it more for myself as anyone else. It's a very creative form of self expression that is very addictive. Wonderful story of your journey. It just goes to show that consistency and growth go hand and hand, that once you got 1K subs, the growth came a bit more quickly after that, despite the first year being a slow growth. Plus you found your audience and your best niches, who loved your moving series, fashion, and your travel vlogs.

It took me about a year and a half to get monetized, and my best performing videos are also NYC apartment videos. People really seem to love that kind of thing! Keep up the great work!

It's all about momentum. You have to consistently crank out great videos and not take long breaks. I was up to $1,500 a month at one point then took several months off and came back to $200 a month. It was like starting all over again. Ugh!

@whatsontrend Well this is a very late reply but I got 10,000 new subscribers in the past 28 days. No long breaks this time just cranking out videos. The money is back to where it was before I took time off. Momentum!

13:27 Agreed. Getting monetized isn't the goal. You probably shouldn't have goals on RUclips. You have to think in terms of everything being endless. Getting an endless amount of views and watch hours per month. It's about the process. It's more healthy to think that way. Thanks for sharing by the way. I started my RUclips channel over 2 years ago and I'm still not monetized, although I have less than 100 subs to go! I got to the 4000 hours mark pretty easily, however. Being a content creator is a lot of work, especially the first year or two.
This is soo realistic! Even tho getting those first 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours seems so so so
far away for me right now, and feels like I’m never gonna be able to reach that goal but with each video i post , I am getting a little hope “mabye one day”
It will take a lot of patience, time and
consistency, but I can't wait to feel that feeling she described when she got her first pay check…. “Maybe one day”🥺

You have a good CPM! Mine is only $2.50 - 3.00, so I have to get a lot more views to make the same amount of money.
I loved seeing your journey, cuz mine was somewhat similar. I had a lot of explosive channel growth during the pandemic, but then views went down.
However, my journey to be monetized was highly unusual. I started in 2010 and wasn't monetized until 2021. It took me a really long time to figure out how to make entertaining videos. XD

I really appreciate it really everyone talks about their revenue after they have 500k subscribers and 100s of millions of views and i just skip those .. also thank you so so much for being relatable , honest , kind and motivating i am currently at 155 subscribers and i am from Egypt.i just hope that when i get monetized i have a 4 dollar cpm because it is currently 0.50 $ which i got from the internet because here they never say how much they make or even the cpm or rpm.

I know all about the struggle of trying to grow your channel and the deflation feeling and taking a break. Glad your doing well, perhaps one of these days my Channel will grow too.
