Fourteen years ago, Amy Chua published Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. It was received less like a book and more like a nuclear bomb. Here are some headlines from the time: “Why I Will Never Be a Tiger Mom.” “Why Amy Chua Is Wrong About Parenting.” “Amy Chua Is a Circus Trainer, Not a Tiger Mother.” “The Human Race Needs Elephant Mothers, Not Tiger Mothers.” “Amy Chua's Recipe for Disaster and the Externalized Cost of Book Sales.”
Then, just as the publicity around Tiger Mother died down, Amy came out with The Triple Package, about why some ethnic groups succeed. People called her racist. Then she came out in support of Brett Kavanaugh's court nomination in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal (before he was accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford). Afterward, people accused her of misogyny and grooming. And she was almost forced out of Yale for it.
Then, in 2021, she was accused of hosting boozy dinner parties during COVID lockdowns and “dinner party-gate” was born. Yale punished her by barring her from teaching her “small group” first-year student contingency.
Fast-forward to 2025. And the tables have turned.
Being a strict “tiger mom”? In. Free speech? In. Wokeness and hypersensitivity? Out.
Covid lockdowns? Definitely out. Vicious character assassinations at Senate confirmations? Out. As Free Press reporter Peter Savodnik just wrote: “The ideas that Chua was pilloried for are suddenly back in fashion.”
Just a few weeks ago, she attended the inauguration of the incoming president and vice president-one of whom happens to be her former student and mentee.
It’s easy to be a weather vane-to go where the wind blows. It's hard to be Amy Chua-to stand up for your beliefs even when they are not popular, even when it means personal consequences. On today’s episode, live in D.C. during inauguration weekend, Chua explains how and why she won-and what it feels like to be vindicated.

@ I think the way each district distributes money varies. Some can prioritize math, science, robotics and pay overtime to teachers who run these clubs. They do that for sports coaches from what I have seen. They can also support them simply by attending competition events or as part of morning announcements or by praising and singling out students who participate in these areas and win competitions. I have never seen a principal attend a science olympiad competition while they rarely would miss an important football game. All attention, support and praise typically goes to football, basketball and baseball teams and the difference between how the students in sports are treated compared to those that participate on math and science teams is stark.

As a woke ADOS*, I'd like to know why certain White numbskulls and knuckle-draggers hijacked and weaponized the term, and generalized it to include folks involved with other concerns -- the "pronoun crowd" and political partisans, for example? Its real meaning is steeped in Black culture and used by members to distinguish themselves from low-information Blacks who are ignorant of historical and current events that affect the lineage, which is me letting charity prevail. Here I'm referencing MAGA cultists and White Nationalists, many of whom are afraid because they're no longer the country's default Americans with all the rights, duties, and privileges thereof. Last, like clockwork, the country perpetrates physical, psychological, and political warfare on ADOS preventing it from being COLLECTIVELY SELF-DETERMINED. Yet our free- and low-wage labor built America's stealth economics. Pay up. Restorative Justice is required, not the usual backhand. Then leave us alone. Side-Eye.

Regarding the culture on college campuses, my recent experience, as a graduate TA who has taught a gen ed literature course for the past several years at a midwestern state university, is as follows:
The undergraduate student body, while it definitely leans Democrat, is not overall stereotypically "woke." (I understand the situation might be a bit different at "elite" universities.) Plenty of the students I've taught who are broadly liberal will casually use phrases like "both genders" without a second thought - not because they're trying to make a statement, but because that's just their default way of thinking. Some might even use the expression "colored people" rather than "people of color," in which case I gently suggest to them that the former is not really used nowadays. In the past election, most students here voted for Harris, but of the 40-odd students I taught last semester, there were as many students sporting Trump signage as Harris signage (in the form of hats, laptop stickers, etc.), which is to say one of each.
One thing which I do find unfortunate is that on average, the more "woke" individuals tend to be better students - they analyze texts more insightfully, write clearer and more mechanically sound papers, etc. While that in and of itself isn't a bad thing - the more good students I have, the better, as far as I'm concerned - it does suggest to me that woke beliefs and ways of thinking are enmeshed within K-12 education (particularly high school education), and therefore tend to be picked up by students who genuinely want to learn. Someone who pays attention in class and puts effort into their assignments will "improve" in wokeness at the same time they improve their reading and writing skills, in other words. Such students do receive better grades in my classes - while I disagree with their politics, they're producing good work - but I find it concerning that the most curious and industrious students are primed toward a particular ideology because they're doing the things students are supposed to do.

The problem is that sports are the only place where merit success is allowed while it is quashed elsewhere. The smart kids aren’t celebrated. We are no longer allowed to have science fairs with prizes because the dumb kids feel like losers (it’s not like everyone but the dumb kids get a prize just a few do but somehow it’s ok to say no awards in academic pursuits but sports champs are celebrated). Everyone gets an A and we have to get rid of standardized tests that objectively show not every child is intellectually brilliant. Different children have different gifts and they should be allowed to compete and be winners in their areas. Stop with this coddling of the dumb lazy kids to the detriment of the smart kids. The dumb kids may be good at other things, celebrate that, don’t falsely praise them in intellect and punish the others to protect their feelings.

Enjoyed this conversation, have been a fan of Amy Chua's for a long time.
Her ideas (not the Tiger Mom book) on America's model, ethnic "success", tribalism, etc. were ahead of the mainstream conversation and many of her ideas and theories resonate.
She is also an engaging communicator to listen to.
Glad she survived "cancellation". She looks great here, too.
Disagree with Bari that Tiger Parenting is IN.
Not attacking any community in any way - I'm a child of immigrants (different group) myself and do see positive cultural influences and results from many groups. The "American" way has its own flaws, and could learn.
But it also offers more flexibility and pathways that help many people thrive in different ways, than many other societies.
Tiger Parenting may work for some, but not all. Wish more people would be more honest about the cost of some of this pressure.
Not everyone wants to be, can be or should be, a "doctor, lawyer or engineer".
As a former educator and in different settings, have seen unhealthy levels of pressure, inability to make own independent decisions, creative "sparks" killed in favour of "academic" success, etc. as a result this type of pressure. Not to mention sometimes being pushed into some shady academic behaviour because of the same pressure, particularly certain groups.
(All of this goes for American homegrown kids of "Tiger Parents", too).
But overall a great conversation here that touched on a few things.
Amy is great. So is Bari.

The Tiger Mom fiasco was the weirdest non-scandal. "Some mother somewhere whom you don't even know and will never meet is strict with her kids and writes a funny book about it." I didn't understand why in the world this was even a story, let alone a controversial one.

I love Bari and have been a paid subscriber of TFP since the begining, but she can't hide her contempt for those that she believes are not in her "class". It's how she approached president Trump, and when I was listening to this conversation and Amy was trying to make the point that some people have valuable talents and traits beyond brains and Amy said for a Prom Queen it takes a lot of - Bari said make-up - it shows what she really thinks of beatiful people who are admired by their peers. Maybe she was never a Prom Queen. The same type of women who said the bathing suit competition should be removed from BEAUTY pagents, because it was insulting, don't understand the discipline it take to have a good physique. Athletes often make great leaders.

I didn't hear the comment yet but it's ridiculous nowadays how people read so much into single little comments people make..and what does beauty have to do with class? You really don't know how someone views whole groups of people based on one comment, no one could

Bari is one of my favorite interviewers. I also think she is misunderstood. Asking questions to get the interviewee to open up should not be interpreted as supporting one point of view or another.
I only attribute a belief to Bari, or any other good interviewer (Michael Moynihan, Nick Gillespie) when they express it as such. Bari says she is a Zionist so that is given.
Amy is interesting. I like her. I don’t agree with all her positions but so what. Who does anyone agree with all the time?

In the end if you live for 80 years average, the best gift of a parent is to help the child have values of giving, contentment, happiness and encourage the child to prioritise this and families. I think the promise of a top job and big money, is an empty promise when it actually happens. In the West if you work sensibly and don't spend crazily you will have enough to survive and be happy hopefully all your life. The balance in your life will help protect you in the future.
