I have a bunch of random huge comments about a lot of things so buckle up for a really massive comment lol - The color mode for Game Boy games are actually colors like how they appear when you play older GB games on Game Boy Color, some of them are completely weird and out of left field at times, but it's not the worst. Personally I love using the LCD screen filter, but I think in other display modes, it is too dark and is better to use for Game Boy Color mode. - You would be surprised but the N64 emulator was handled by the same team behind N64 emulation for Wii U, which is iQue (GC and Wii were handled by NST, who had previous N64 development experience). This is supposed to be an improved N64 emulator from 2015. The Wii U VC had really bad emulation already, the input lag was a lot worse and it's even where the infamous Dark Link room started to look really bad and was never ever fixed. Heck the title screen demo of Donkey Kong 64 actually desyncs and the game has widescreen support but you cannot play in widescreen mode on Wii U it would just squish the game graphically for no actually good reason. The emulator was used for Super Mario 64 in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, where the emulation was actually pretty okay, but for some reason, a full year later, the N64 emulator regressed beyond hell. Super Mario 64 was actually emulated much much worse at launch of N64 NSO, and the Dark Link room in OoT somehow became worse than Wii U. I do not understand how such a thing happened. It is absolutely ridiculous. But what I think is that N64 may just not be iQue's strong suit. They had made a fine NES and GBC emulator for 3DS, and the GBC emulator was even reused for Kirby's Dream Collection on Wii. In fact the GBC emulator was fully replaced by NERD's brand new GBC emulator, who developed the new NES emulator for NES Mini and NSO, also SNES, and also DS on Wii U and GameCube emulation which some of its work is also powering Super Mario Galaxy and Pikmin 1+2 ports. The GameCube emulator does very similar stuff to the N64 emulator by iQue, except it is actually done in a way smarter way. And somehow, the GBA emulator was developed by a newcomer: Panasonic Vietnam. And their emulator, as I tested with specific ROMs for testing purposes, has way high accuracy to the point of rivaling unofficial emulation. To me, that's a real accomplishment, it surpasses M2's GBA emulator on Wii U VC in every way. The fact that the N64 emulator is still the same one from Wii U VC's 2015 emulator and somehow did not improve that much in 8 years is frankly worrying. I don't actually like putting developers under the sun, but I just feel like iQue would be best put as a support studio or developing way less complex things than a N64 emulator. - Fun fact the Paper Mario menu slowdown does not happen on the PAL version because of a typo in the script that they didn't fix. - The Controller Pak emulation has been there since Wii U actually, but for some reason, they just never used it. It's actually fully working. They added a new scripting system to allow game hacking easier, but for some reason does not even make N64 controller pak auto switching possible. - The thing about M rated games on NSO like Conker and Perfect Dark is actually not as unlikely as you think. Goldeneye was announced in Japan to eventually launch later this year, but that game is actually rated CERO Z, and that is the highest rating you can get in Japan. It seems though that Nintendo may be too lazy to implement an age rating filter in the apps and may just randomly bump the age rating of the entire app itself, at least if I base myself from their website saying that the age rating of the apps may just change without prior notice. - Dinosaur Planet will never ever show up because it was completed as Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube. The N64 game was never finished, and Nintendo will not the time to complete an old game, that was even developed by a studio they never even owned. You mention Star Fox 2 and EarthBound Beginnings, but both games were actually completed back then, they literally held onto the finished ROMs the entire time. Some people believed they finished Star Fox 2 for the SNES Mini, but that was never the case, it was explained by the original developers that after the game was cancelled internally, that Nintendo still wanted them to finish it back in 1995, and it underwent the same process as all the other Nintendo games, and the Nintendo gigaleak of 2020 even proved it even further that the ROM used was dated from 1995 (alongside the leak of the source code). They do have other unreleased games and unreleased localizations, some of the latter seeing release on Wii U VC for example like Drill Dozer's European 5 language version, the japanese version of Game & Watch Gallery 4 (yup it never released in Japan before), and more recently, Magical Drop 2 on SNES NSO is actually the original US version that was approved by Nintendo in the 90s. This stuff are I think likely to show up in the future, but they are still few and between. When it comes to unreleased games, I know Nintendo has a bunch of them. Some of them even leaked through the gigaleak with several unreleased first party Game Boy games and many other third party stuff. - They had unfinished 64DD emulation on Wii U that was still present... AS IS on Switch but now it's outright gone (after I datamined things and publicly talked about them on Twitter they removed all of that in the next update). If they had 64DD emulated I don't think Doshin The Giant is that unlikely to show up as Nintendo clearly doesn't mind having every version of a game to show up. There's actually an attempt to emulate Animal Crossing's clock on the N64 emulator too. - Square Enix is actually very much interested to release their entire library and have clearly shown some goodwill towards that. But I think they see NSO as a thing that devalues their library, and may be a lot worse to negociate with that Nintendo would probably prefer not to bother.
- It's also hard to believe, but Nintendo managed to actually add retro games to NSO literally every single month since December 2021. If you count them regardless of consoles, it is genuinely what happened consistently up to now. Their accomplishment is how they managed to make it feel so sluggish as the consoles getting an update are just feeling really random, with some getting ignored for way too long, and the amount of games per month can go from a measly 1 to about 10 (June 2023 updates). It makes absolutely zero sense. I understand why the dripfeed is a thing, especially to bring attention to games that wouldn't get much otherwise, but the inconsistency is very much the most annoying part of NSO updates. - When it comes to missing first party titles, you'd be surprised but there's way more they could do for every console currently and I managed to compile a list of those missing games here that are mostly first party focused with some third parties that I felt were worth mentioning here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q6-ETi3IdQ5y3ALuQTVGXUAiZ8YQRHFN0r0c2l0gpIU/edit#gid=1624165462 - There's not a single server for online except for the NSO 99 games. All other games (including retro NSO apps) run purely on the connection quality of all players in P2P. I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing, because in my opinion I don't see dedicated servers as a possiblity to make online retrogaming better outside of cloud streaming. But they could have servers between players as a beacon to ease connection problems, which I haven't seen evidence of use in those apps currently. It is used in games like Mario Party Superstars and others though. - The N64 stick sensitivity on Switch controllers is very terrible, and I had also datamined a menu button for button remapping for N64 NSO. I'm still mad about how they didn't make that happen. - This is something of my own complaint: There are no PAL localizations of games on NES and SNES as of today. They still haven't added them and I am legitimately annoyed as a french who loves to play games in french when they exist. The fact that I still cannot play A Link To The Past in french (one of the very few games to have a french 60hz version even) until when they'll probably add the GBA version (which comes with Four Swords) is absolutely baffling. In fact when Nintendo France tweeted about the game, they removed the tweet after they had tons of complaints about how the game wasn't available in french. - When it comes to adding features: I do absolutely agree about the use of matchmaking randoms, but I think a must have feature is to have public rooms with public passwords. I personally believe Nintendo should make games playable with more than just friends, and making a public room with a basic password protection would be great to do stuff like tournaments or maybe even streamers to get viewers to play with them. I also wish for games to get localized without having to remake them. I think most remakes are unnecessary and most games are already playable on their own but just needs to be more approachable with english text. The NES/SNES update of September 2023 really disappointed me on that. Cool that a bunch of games from Japan came worldwide, but then they're still in japanese. Some games are fine without a translation, but I think some really needs it; and the games from that update absolutely do. They should seriously strive to make a better online experience, and for me there's nothing sadder than how online play used to be the one dream that makes players all around the world to play together, only to get bogged down by random mentions of "please buy an Ethernet adapter" (of which I still wonder why the fuck Nintendo still didn't include one in the dock until the Switch OLED) and "please play with people closer to you". - About the whole ownership vs subscription thing: I will personally not buy games that are available on the subscription. I think retro games are not always worth it. In fact I thought Virtual Console was too expensive for its own good since the Wii and I only got 5 games total out of that and those 5 games were more of exceptions that confirmed the rule more than anything else. It doesn't help that a lot of my life was just having ROM fullsets through retro game piracy, and what that taught me is more about the importance of being able to play anything you want at any time, but I think the most important part of it is being able to share the experience. NSO is in my opinion the closest thing to this kind of experience because I can tell people to play a specific game that they have access to through their sub, and it's kind of refreshing to me. I just kind of always see ownership as something not as necessary for cultural things, what matters is access to me. I also personally believe that Virtual Console was considered a bit of a failure by Nintendo. Something needs to be said about how Sega skipped Wii U Virtual Console entirely, they even skipped 3DS VC after a while. The result is that Nintendo and Sega worked hard to make a lot of games working and tested, writing manuals too, only for a large majority of them to just not sell, as users would just flock to the popular games. This is particularly sad to me. I remember how Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros. had joined the eShop top selling games before NSO truly launched and was given as a reason to why Virtual Console should happen, but to me it just proves people are ready to buy Super Mario Bros. again and again. It's a popular game. No one wants to buy a game called Fire & Ice or Spanky's Quest despite them being pretty good games, because they're not in the big lists. I personally despise people who does not want to try games when they're right there as they pay a subscription. I believe the retro games subscription exists solely for Nintendo to make amends to the idea of putting unpopular games without getting their development and testing's worth. I have a lot more to say, but at this point, this is too long. Maybe I am trying too hard, but I hope I bring lots of good and informative points here.
Around the time I got into emulators as early as May 2015, there really was no point in playing classic games on the Wii/Wii U/Switch anymore, considering that emulators are reversed engineered by fans whom were dedicated to certain consoles that needed quality of life upgrades over using 20/30 year old hardware that, at some point in it's life, will eventually die adn so will the components, hardware, CPUs, GPUs, memory banks, graphics chips, etc. in the hardware of an actual physical console. And good luck trying to get your hands on those consoles, especially ones exclusive to certain regions/countries around the world (Including Japan/Korea/China, and the others). So for me, emulation, even though it's software emulation, not hardware emulation like flashcarts and MISTer, is usually the way to go unless the company makes remake of one of their IPs to give it a fresh coat of paint for both new and old players alike. For me however, I stopped buying Nintendo products after the Nintendo Wii, and never bothered with the Switch, Wii U, PS4, PS5, Xbox One (as I like to call it "Xbox Three" and the original xbox being the actual "Xbox One" not the eight generation variant), Xbox Series X/S, and so on and so fourth. Switched over to PC/Emulation since 2015, and never looked back. So seeing all of this to me is just from someone who took their time to go through each emulator and gave it pros and cons to each emulator for the overall fun, quality, speed, and options, and games included in that specific emulator on the Nintendo Service Online system.
@@benmalsky9834 the glazing is crazy 💀 it's certainly much better than it was before (especially now that they added f zero 99 lol) but it still has a lot of room to improve
Too often you see the same people repeatedly. I'm glad at lease RUclips knows what I watch and what to give me that's related to what I was watching before. But sometimes it gives me videos I already watched and are days/months/years old...So not much of a help to find videos that just came out now would it.
I feel like the best scenario would be to straight up allow unofficial emulators on their digital store fronts. It will absolutely never happen and it obviously opens up the flood gates to piracy, but I feel like one of the biggest motivating factors for hacking these systems is to play older games via emulation. Allowing the use of unofficial emulators on these systems does more good than harm; the peeps who have Xboxes can personally testify to this too. Those guys are literally living in retro gaming heaven right now. I also don’t think we’ll ever see gamecube games on NSO. If they weren’t willing to do it during the wii u era when they could have benefited from it the most, and during a time when those games could have ran natively on the console, then that tells me Nintendo is content with never releasing these games on these types of services. I am glad they are finally re releasing some of these games recently (the idea that they might do more with a game instead of just plopping it on NSO and calling it a day is also cool), but it only supports the idea that they’ll never come to NSO or any equivalent service in the future, or it’s at least very unlikely imo. (Also, gotta say I really enjoyed the music selection for this video. I’m really glad to have watched this video. Very interesting discussion)
The second I can get my hands on a switch 2 thats backwards compatible I am jailbreaking my day one switch as the ultimate nintendo emulator. Don’t want to get banned or fuck up my system when theres still new things I want to play on it
Yeah, i also think they're not adding Gamecube, they're probably just gonna be releasing ports for the next couple years, same goes for 3ds and Wii, just like they did with the Wii U. DS might have a chance on the next system, but that's about it.
Saturn and Dreamcast with good additions could convince people to upgrade to the expansion but that is so farfetched and who’s to say those games wouldn’t come with their issues like some of the N64 games still suffer from.
This feels like a Nintendo Content Creator Renaissance, super underrated. The choice of music, *really* deep analysis, I can tell this channel will get big.
Looks like the RUclips recommendation system is finally improving! I just discovered your channel, and I think this video is very well-made. I only have the baselevel NSO for Mario Maker, which I think is (kinda) worth it, so the emulation stuff is mostly just a bonus for me. However, I think your critiques of the model hold up, and unfortunately with subscription services everywhere in today's world, I don't think the emulators will get much better than they already are. I never thought about how they're leaving money on the table by excluding the Pokemon games. Keep up the great work :)
My biggest issue with NSO is that I'm a long-term buyer. If I buy a game, I expect to play it for decades to come. I *still* play my 3DS regularly. I *still* play my Gamecube regularly. I like that there's finally some bangers for me as well (I really wasn't a fan of the platformer heavy NES/SNES days) but honestly? I'd rather buy a game I enjoy this long after its original release in a way that isn't gonna vanish some day. I'm an absolute Pokemon TCG Gameboy addict for example, and playing this in good visual quality on a TV screen while lounge on the couch? Amazing - like, actually "I went from barely caring to regularly playing the Gameboy app" amazing, because I love the game that much. Pokemon RBY and GSC would totally have the same effect on me, heck, they would probably make me go and finally get the N64 upgrade if they're compatible with Stadium 1/2. But we don't know what Nintendo will do with this library once they move on from the Switch, but I have no faith they'll just make these libraries available indefinitely. I *know* I'm the type to play my favorite games long beyond support, so the Netflixification of Nintendo classics worries me.
This! I love the comfort of owning my favorite games forever, both on carts and virtual console. I know NSO is worth it for some people, but it isn’t for me, and if they let us buy games individually, that’s how they would get my money. I would probably buy copies of games I already have on older systems. I wish they had the subscription service alongside the option to buy any game on it.
You can emulate gameboy games for free and play them on a tv without paying for nso. You can hook up a pc to a tv if you want to play gb games on a tv.
Emulation is the answer to a lot of things. I use it to keep multiple save files of some of my favorites. I was specifically talking about official (and completely legal) options, because that's the video topic. Obviously, emulating things makes all of that a non-issue.
I am a subscriber of the Expansion Pass and I definatly feel like I got what I paid for. The Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Tracks are fun, and I've sinked numerous hours into the N64 and GBA online apps
Funnily enough, Kirby 64 was only temporarily for the western version of the app, not the Japanese version. As for the fog rendering and moreso the Dark Link room, those were issues stemming back to the WiiU VC versions of the games
Gamecube upwards probably isn't very viable for NSO atm due to the size of the games. If they switch to a cloud-only format it might be but currently they have all the ROMs downloaded for instant access.
Or maybe instead of this joke of a service they could just put the first 3 or 4 gens in a cartridge similar to squares Final Fantasy Pixel remaster and sell it for 50 bucks. They don't even have to put every game on the cartridge, Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and maybe Platinum would be pretty cool.
@@vargsieber see but the thing is you could pop those all on carts individually, and charge $50+ each and everyone would go nuts because the original copies prices are through the roof. pokemon is way past the point of consumer friendly releases
@@Ronbotnik that's even for Nintendo a bit of a stretch, but I could see cartridges for every generation. A cartridge with Red, Blue & Yellow, a Cartridge with Gold, Silver & Crystal and so on.
The subscription/one-time purchase hybrid idea you suggested is honestly ingenious, and I'd say that's exactly why they wouldn't do it, but they kind of already do the exact same thing with the Expansion Pack DLC like the Mario Kart Booster Pack. Also just glad to hear someone reasonably mention how unbearably slow this release pace is. Seriously, the fact that the GBA support was added seven months ago, and yet Zero Mission and Amazing Mirror are still nowhere in sight is just flat-out inexcusable. Then again, it's obvious they're just dragging it out to keep people subscribed. I just hope that they don't reset it all next generation, and frankly bringing it all back over, whether this system is indeed just the Switch 2 or not, should not be hard at all for Nintendo anymore. Then again, you can never be too sure with Nintendo in terms of stuff like this.
I'm glad I'm content with the service. I'm very grateful for it. Without it I probably wouldn't be interested in retro gaming at all, and I'm been introduced to some of my favorite games- DKC2, Super Metroid, Link to the Past and a bunch of others I probably wouldn't pay $5 just to play one of them. And I also like the "shovelware" releases too, lots of those games deserve more attention. Prehistorik Man and Bomb Logic are great games.
This video was so good! It was a very thorough breakdown and I learned a lot about the NSO games I haven't played yet/don't have at my subscription level. Also the presentation was so cozy! Just subscribed! I'm curious if the lack of Pokemon has to do with TPCI/GameFreak wanting to implement Home support? They had Home and Bank on 3DS and I'm 99% sure the Gameboy games from the EShop were connected. But on Switch, they can't even launch their new games with Home support, let alone getting it to communicate with the NSO system. I don't think the majority of players would be heartbroken if they could only transfer their NSO Gameboy Pokemon into the Stadium games and not into Gen 9, but the forwards compatibility of Pokemon has always been a core part of the franchise, even to its detriment. I think you're right that people would rush to buy the higher NSO tier if it meant they had access to Pokemon. I would love to see rereleases of the GBA games now that 3DS is on the way out, and with it the Gen 3 remakes. That being said, it would be even more of an accomplishment if they could implement full Home support with NSO, and I really do think they're waiting for that before they announce anything. They've been rushing their products out the door the past few years so if they actually have a functional title on launch, it'll be worth the wait (even for games older than me lol). I also hope they put Pokemon Channel on NSO when they start adding Gamecube titles. I don't know if they could add Hey You Pikachu because of the lack of mic support, but I love all those silly side games they made back in the day and Channel would be so perfect in the NSO library!
From what I see, this classic library will most definitely get beat out by the Steam Deck's retroarch emulation. Nintendo just cannot keep up with such obscure titles.
I do agree with you with the biggest problem, For me personally, I just go for Super Mario 3D all-stars, Metroid Prime remastered, pikmin 1 + 2, Super Mario Maker 2 (because that game has 3 of the original 8bit and 16 bit Mario games that play the exact same thing as the original counterparts did, but in a more modified style and for me personally, it's the closest we can get to a 2D Mario collection) Sonic Origins, Sega Genesis collection, Mega Man legacy collection, Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles cowabunga collection, Pac-Man museum +, arcade archives and some other third party retro collection games If I were to keep the games forever.
Er...how does Mario Maker 2 count as having the original games? Don't get me wrong, I think Mario Maker (both 1 and 2) were a great idea, but I really don't see how either of them would be able to take the place of the games they reference stylistically. They don't play the same at all lol
@@qactustick Well, there are some people out there that did re-create the original levels from the original Mario styles that almost do mimic the exact same thing as the original 8-bit and 16 bit Mario games did. (If you get what I'm saying)
I’m surprised you only have a little more than 100 subs for videos of this quality. Underrated gem of a RUclipsr. Btw the algorithm is working now for you becuase I found this channel just by scrolling through my recommended. Great job!
Well you took every complaint I had and still have with the service and presented it well. Our only hope is that Switch 2 somehow revitalizes NSO. The service will have to keep growing if they want to continue selling it, but doubt we'll see much of any growth until the next console releases.
And this is why I stick with the base service and just emulate the games on pc. It's just much easier for older games like this and much more reliable than waiting on an out of touch company to add them to a service that's gonna just be restarted for the next console. Nice video, I don't really share my thoughts on anything much seeing how the internet is nowadays isn't fond of opposing opinions. But I'd suggest watching nerrel's videos as well on the whole NSO ordeal as well. Anyhoos you have a good one man.
sorta a nitpick, but i wish there was an option in the n64 app settings to set the resolution back to the native 240p, as high resolutions on n64 games clash with the low res hud, low res textures, and the low poly models. a crt filter for n64 would also be nice
I'm still surprised that Nintendo hasn't added Duck Hunt to Switch Online yet. It might be because they'd wanna make a Zapper for the console, like how theyve made the original controllers for the online service apps, but they could just not do that and use the gyro controls for the joycons and pro controllers. Duck Hunt was available for Wii U virtual console so idk whats going on w it.
The color filter for gameboy games is an accurate representation of playing old GB games on the GBC. Some definitely look weird, but they did back then too.
you give off these "wise grandparent" vibes. i mean it in the best way! i enjoyed listening to your rambles, critiques and sometimes positive words no Matter the age, vibe or Something 3rd, you are kind of like that one family member i never had who cares about games thank you!
The expansion pack is probably not worth the price yet, but the base subscription for only 20 bucks gives you so much. Honestly i dont mind the way they sell this games because there are a lot of games j played and enjoyed here that i would have never bought myself, but having them included in the subscription encouraged me to try them
I think the game collection idea could actually work; at a bit of caveat, but still. Imagine, it's nearing the end of the Switch's lifetime. Nintendo knows the service is gonna be out, and they have seen people be willing to shell out money for separate games they really enjoyed since that's what they used to do on Virtual Console for several consoles straight. Your suggestion could work, only that I don't think they'd make it free. It'd likely just be a small fee per game, but considering how many people would likely buy most of the heavyhitters like the Zelda games or really anything with Mario's name on it, they could still make one final margin of profit from Switch owners before their new system releases. Best case scenario, this would allow Pokemon Home to be compatible with the Pokemon Stadium titles, albeit with similar stats-changing restrictions it has between games (and probably a better tracking of every ability/movepool a single 'mon has had [or could have] in every Switch game it can be).
holy shit you only have 300 subs? that is criminal this is some of the best video essay content i’ve seen! love the music choices also! had to subscribe keep it up man! :)
I agree with you and think NSO is very flawed, but I also think that the things fans are doing to keep these games alive like native PC ports and phenomenal emulators will never be surpassed by what game companies themselves do. Virtual Console was pretty good for what it was and I really like your pitch for how to bring NSO closer to it, even if Nintendo will probably never do that. I also really like your style and am surprised you don’t have more views. I think you’ve earned a sub.
Thank you! I do agree that fan projects are ultimately the best ways these games can be preserved, but I do think official things like this can be great if they are handled correctly.
@@linguicaguyremakes/masters (not just upscaling to the newest resolution) and additional content or qol features that make it easier to enjoy, content being stuff the fans may have been interested in or missed opportunities to add into the original game.
The option to purchase games would be huge. Gamepass has it perfectly figured out. You can subscribe to the service OR purchase the games individually. Nintendo could even make it similar to the NSO controllers, where a membership is required for the ability to purchase the games individually. Anything to give me the option to own some of my favorites. I think a good pace they could keep us updating each app with one game per month. It would help keep things moving at a consistent pace, and give everyone something new to play each month regardless of your tier. It beats waiting months to MAYBE get an update. I’m also shocked we haven’t seen more systems added at this point. SEGA’s library is ripe for release. Saturn, Game Gear, 32x, Sega CD, and Dreamcast would all be perfect additions, especially since those games are almost never rereleased, especially compared to Genesis. Nintendo has outright stated that they are continuing with the Nintendo Account system, which gives me huge hope that NSO will continue onward with it and improve.
Hey I know I'm 2 days late, but I wanted to say I really enjoyed the video and feel honored that you used my footage! And the choice of music along with the editing was stellar! Excellent video :)
Really great video, keep up the quality content. One of my issues with the NSO emulators is how small the opening library is for stuff like GBA. I also hope they add a gamecube one, even though it probably won’t happen Edit: Wow you hit over 1K views, great job!
@@HPPrintervx4p5qunfortunately even though the switch 2 will have a 99.9% chance of being strong enough to run gamecube games, i doubt we’ll get them because of all of the HD ports that have released lately
@@totalradlad mario sunshine and pikmin are easier to emulate GameCube games, a game like f zero gx is much more demanding. It might be possible but the cpu of the switch is very weak, that's why they had to port the code on galaxy so it didn't have to emulate the cpu side.
Xenoblade and MOTHER 3 music based based based based based Yeah the game selection being weird and not great likely partially has to do with how many classic compilations have been dropping left and right since like 2015. Companies won't let Nintendo license a rom they can instead just put in a collection of their own roms and charge much more for, and get to keep all the cash instead of just licensing fees. Castlevania IV still being on the SNES app is a miracle, I'm surprised it wasn't removed when Konami released their Castlevania Classic Collection, it would definitely be a fitting Konami move. Considering how Nintendo's online service has not improved at all and the classic game selection is currently just... fine, I think the best thing they could do now is to go back to free online play and instead have the paid service JUST be a subscription service for classic games. That way they can put more money into actually making the games run well and licensing more games. I KNOW there's a future where Conker is available on NSO and runs amazingly, but I don't know if we'll get to see it.
i actually use colors live for the nostalgia!! lol i used it and the built in online community from 2012-2017 so when the switch physical copy came out i lost my mind and bought it right away. i also met one of my best friends on there in 2013!
This is why I love NSO. The anticipation of what could be added next is exciting in my opinion. I want Mario Vs. Donkey Kong too, but I’m not being a baby about it.
There has never been a moment when using NSO where I went: Awww this game that I wanted to play isn't here, these controls are really bad, this doesn't look right, I regret buying this. So in my books, it's good and I am satisfied with the quality
Unfortunately, as a retro game enthusiast, I cannot say the same thing. There are so many games I would love to play that aren't here... Nazo no Murasame Jo, Thracia 776, Shin Onigashima, Mach Rider, Super Mario Land 1, Diddy Kong Racing, Four Swords GBA... Not to mention all the BS-X, Virtual Boy and N6DD games Nintendo refuses to ever touch again.
@@justapickedminfan Just because Nintendo isn’t adding them now doesn’t mean they ever will be. It’s about quality over quantity and keeping subscribers engaged. Plus, there are more than 200 games already that it should be more than satisfactory.
I remembered having fun online with the switch when it was free, it’s been years since Nintendo Switch online was a thing so I kinda got used to it. At least I had some fun with the emulators though.
I do not think gamecube or wii games will come to NSO, or 3DS. Those games are in a state that makes them really easy to remaster/rerelease on their own, which I think make more money than adding them to the subscription
I agree that there's definitely problems with the service (The drip-feed of games is particularly annoying), but I like it overall. I just have to pay the price of one modern game and for a year I get access to a whole bunch of games I've never played before. Not owning those games sucks though. I wish there was a service where you could get a "blank" Switch cartridge and just download a game onto there. If I knew the legality of it and had the know-how to pull it off I'd start a service like that myself.
A lot of retro consoles and the handhelds have things like the Everdrive where you can plop in an SD card with ROMs. One could probably be made for the Switch. The device itself isn't illegal because it doesn't contain any stolen content. You provide the ROMs yourself after buying the device.
19:16 dang, on Wii U *and* the Wii U? Also, I believe the reason the GB Pokémon games aren’t on NSO is because things like saves states and the rewind feature would ruin the spirit of those games. So unless they can disable those for specific games, I’m not sure if those will come.
I never minded the Wii U filter much. Like yeah, it was kinda weird, but I guess it was supposed to reduce brightness to keep it easy on the eyes. That's just my theory.
I think NSO currently isn't neither good or bad, maybe an OK, but as i see it what it needs to improve is: Get more consoles such as Gamecube, wii, ds/3ds, next to that keep and improve ts free dlc policy and a better online infraestructure, i mean the best games from all Nintendo console gens would make it a good deal, i think they should also allow virtual console as it was on wii as an option for ppl who wants to buy specific games, something like gamepass pretty sure its not doable, or atleast not currently (i mean they could, but the build up would be a pain in the ass since at the start its a loss of money), there's also this Nintendo TV thing, which i don't know really what they plan about this, making a subscription just like Netflix, Disney plus, etc? Only for their own productions? Its kind of hard to tell as it would need constant new content to keep ppl paying every month
It sucks that almost EVERY port of any game in all systems has at least some glitches and problems. The worst one I have ever seen is the mobile port of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. I was so excited to play it when it came out in 2015 but it was broken on release. It crashed randomly, it is missing the DLC, it only lets you save 3 parks and then if you make a 4th, it will delete your oldest park without telling you, also Auto-Save works but it turns itself off in the settings every time you close and open the game. Also the level of detail distances are really bad, everything is pixelated and the render distances are horrible. I built an indoor roller coaster and then when I road it, it looked like I was outside because the wall pieces disappear when your like 8 squares away from them. Also it's missing a bunch of settings like being able to change the size of your park or where your park is located, city, country, forest ect. Also if you play it on the iPhone X or any phone after that. The game runs in a small square with thick black bars on the sides and a thin black bar on the top and bottom, the game is also locked in 25 FPS, and in lower quality resolution, also the "Dingy Slide" water slide is broken and doesn't let you put top pieces on your slide, and the Water Coaster doesn't let you toggle on and off water tracks. Also this game came out in 2015 and the graphics were set really low which is understandable so that it could run on the iPhone 5. but in 2023, the graphics are the same and look even worse on a bigger screen, newer phones can definitely run the game in better graphics but you cannot change the graphics like you can on PC, also the worst part is that the game doesn't let you listen to music in the background, it pauses your music every time you tap the screen so you cannot play the game while listening to music. They need to update the game and fix all of these issues and it will be nice if they add in controller support like the Switch version has. Also the Poppy Playtime mobile port and the GTA San Andreas Mobile Port are both really bad to
I appreciate your insight, your humor and flow of discussion. Kept my attention the whole video. I’m super glad that Nintendo didn’t lock MK8’s dlc behind NSO. Very thankful that I still have my Wii from when I was a kid with all the VC games I bought. The subscription based system has always just felt kind of flimsy to me.
Good video. Nice to see a more balanced perspective, showcasing the positives and negatives of this service. Personally, I love being able to play all these classic games on my Switch, but it really does suck that there's no way for you to actually own them. If this were a thing on 3DS and Wii U instead of Virtual Console, we likely wouldn't be able to play the retro games after the recent eShop shutdown, which would be terrible for me since VC games are definitely the main reason I still play my 3DS nowadays (not to imply that its library of games wasn't great). I think Nintendo should've merged this subscription service with Virtual Console, giving you the opportunity to either have the subscription to temporarily own everything or buy the games separately. Since there's so many games, maybe they can give people that have the subscription a discount like Game Pass does. Speaking of which, there's also the issue of pricing, which honestly I'm surprised you didn't bring up. I think the base online price of $20 a year for basic online functionality + NES, SNES, and Game Boy games is actually pretty great, but the Expansion Pack being such a big price jump makes it a much harder purchase to justify. I'd love to see Wii and GameCube games added to this service, though I'd also agree with you that it seems much more likely that they're going to stick to remasters, remakes, and ports for those two consoles. My dream port for Switch is and always has been Punch-Out Wii, so I'm hoping that shows up some day. I watch Nvidia Shield footage of the game sometimes and I think it'd be amazing just to have that version (not in Chinese of course) ported to the Switch, as well as every other Wii game that showed up on Nvidia Shield.
Nintendo should have a 'request Nintendo' apartment or something that let us know what bothers us fans and what should be better. This is a strategy for them, as they can know what they users want, and for us, since we can talk to them without having to talk so much about complaints untill they listen to us
@@benmalsky9834 but not all people are so enthusiastic as you, besides, critics would be managed better because we wouldn't have to draw attention to solve the problems. And there's always complaints, as a company, if i was one i will do it. To satisfy my users
They should add the finished but never released Pokémon Picross for the gameboy color. There’s a prototype rom online that works from begging to the credits and I think that would be cool to see a real release.
I play Tetris 99 several times a week. Lately I've been playing several times a day so I get my money's worth. $20 is a good price and I'm not wasting money on the expansion pack since I hate most N64 games and most 3D games in general. Also with Nintendo Online, It's the main way to play Animal Crossing. You lose a lot of content without the updates from Nintendo Online. Also I've had fun this year with the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC.
It’d be cool if they could add Secret of Evermore from the SNES, but I don’t think that they’re going to given that no other SquareSoft/Enix games are there…
I really enjoyed this video. Glad to see you gave a level headed critique instead of just a sensationalized angry rant. When it comes to the "Big Problem", I think it's worth noting how back in 2013 it was a VERY common sentiment that Virtual Console should be retired and replaced with a "Netflix-like subscription service". I always thought that was a bad idea but Nintendo listened and made it and now we're stuck with it. Worth noting btw that while N64 games had atrocious input lag at launch, it was still better than the Wii U N64 Virtual Console which was completely unplayable due to lag. And GameCube straight up won't happen on Switch due to technical reasons. GCN games are 1.4GB each uncompressed and many games have issues loading in a compressed states. It's unfortunate but most people don't have enough storage for that on their Switch. Each NSO game is downloaded at once, so a GCN app would get VERY big very quickly.
Gotta say if you’ve got a few friends with Switches and share a family expansion pass it’s definitely worth it, me and my lot pay £15 each a year for everything, worth it just to save me digging out the N64 or my SNES every time I want to play some classics
Great video! However there has been a constant feed of new games on nes snes genesis and gb….not the best by far, but they’re there. The LoZ Oracle games and Exitebike 64 in the last month alone, as well as 3 for the base systems.
Amazing video! However, you left out one big complaint regarding the emulation: what about speed options that come standard on any fan emulator? Stuff like NES RPGs for example are made a lot more accessible when you can speed up the grinding process. Also, I would love to play the original Prime even though I played Remastered, because they are pretty different experiences from what I heard. But I can't without getting scalped or "sailing the 7 seas" Oh and I forgot my main stance. Until they actually fix the actual online experience, I don't care how good the retro stuff gets! That's why these things shouldn't be paired together
I think that the NSO DLC concept is being heard. As mentioned, they have classic games making a rebound at higher rates than before, and that'd also explain why their subscription system is subpar on content, probably because they want to rerelease some of those titles. It's proving true quite a bit. However, I think their online infrastructure might be holding them back, and hopefully that's where the next console will update things the most. It still feels bad to use a secondary console for games (since you reserve the main console as the family console), and yet be forced to play non-digital when utilizing the mobility of the Switch. Since digital games appear to have done well on the Switch, I would expect that system to update on the new console, and possibly a wide range of retro titles to make their way to the storefront as well. Time will tell. All that said, when you can get a family of 8 running on the premium NSO service for $80 a year, you know it's not meant to be a true gamepass experience. You get what you paid for. I do still expect to see expansion of this come Switch 2.
I'd honestly really love to see Mischief Makers get released on NSO. It's a great little 2D platformer which would help expand the N64's NSO library (especially since the game has never been officially re-released before). Plus, it was developed by Treasure, who is no stranger to porting their games over to Nintendo consoles (including a number of games currently on NSO). Edit: Did not realize you mentioned the game in your video. My point still stands regardless
I just want to be able to buy titles separately instead of nintendo trying to force me into a subscription service just to rent games I need internet to play and will lose as soon as next newest console releases
You have no idea how much I would like to have Final Fantasy Tactics advance on the Switch as it only was released on the WII U eshop and of course the original GBA it be nice to have it on modern console
I'm really hoping for the GBA Pokemon games, that was the gen I grew up on, and would love to play them handheld again. Also, having them on the TV would be very funny, at least for me.
29:12 Great video but this bit annoys me because there is some pretty cool extra content in all the Mario Advance series. Aside from the obvious visuals and audio changes, Advance 1 has a new boss with Robirdo, Advance 3 has 6 new levels, and Advance 4 has World E of course. Advance 2 is the outlier because it doesn’t add any new levels, but it did add Luigi and his very different physics which keeps the game fresh if you’ve already beaten the SNES version. IMO having them around is justified because of those differences
Yeah sorry about that. I probably should have researched those versions some more. I know that Mario 3 has quite a bit of extra content that people are always talking about, but I wasn't aware of anything too big in the other ones.
i dont think we’re getting a gamecube app. all the past 3 directs have featured full re-releases/remakes of gamecube games (metroid prime, pikmin, ttyd). my bet is nintendo was considering it and decided against it because of the relatively big file sizes
The N64 games I really want on NSO are Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing and Super Smash Bros. And as for 3rd party games. Banjo-Tooie, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct Gold, Blast Corps, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Starcraft, Vigilante 8, Nightmare Creatures, Resident Evil 2, Mission Impossible, Hybrid Heaven, Mischief Makers, Space Station Silicon Valley, Quest 64, Rainbow Six, Rayman 2, The World Is Not Enough, Fighting Force, Aidyn Chronicles, Gauntlet Legends and Mortal Kombat Trilogy would all be welcome if the rights holders were to release those titles on NSO. As for the games which likely won't make it to NSO, Turok: Rage Wars and Armorines Project SWARM are both off at Night Dive and will likely get their own remaster. Disney also do their own remasters so that means no Rogue Squadron, Shadows of the Empire, Mickey's Speedway USA or Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. And Square Enix won't put games on NSO so no Ogre Battle 64. And as for games already remastered for Switch, Turok 1-3, Shadowman, Glover, Doom 64, Quake 1-2, Star Wars Racer, Pro Skater 1-2 and Duke Nukem 3D are already on Switch so they likely won't come to NSO.
My main problem is they release them too slowly. If they could update it twice a month, and add 3 games on each platform every update, then that would be great
I have a bunch of random huge comments about a lot of things so buckle up for a really massive comment lol
- The color mode for Game Boy games are actually colors like how they appear when you play older GB games on Game Boy Color, some of them are completely weird and out of left field at times, but it's not the worst.
- When it comes to missing first party titles, you'd be surprised but there's way more they could do for every console currently and I managed to compile a list of those missing games here that are mostly first party focused with some third parties that I felt were worth mentioning here:
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q6-ETi3IdQ5y3ALuQTVGXUAiZ8YQRHFN0r0c2l0gpIU/edit#gid=1624165462
- There's not a single server for online except for the NSO 99 games.
- When it comes to adding features:
I do absolutely agree about the use of matchmaking randoms, but I think a must have feature is to have public rooms with public passwords.
I had to seperate the comment in two because it was too big. Sorry about that.
Weren't kidding about the big comment, lol. Neat fun facts!
Wow. Thanks for the comments and all of the information.

Don’t want to get banned or fuck up my system when theres still new things I want to play on it
they definitely arent adding gamecube since they realized they can sell those at a profit for 20 bucks a pop
Yeah, i also think they're not adding Gamecube, they're probably just gonna be releasing ports for the next couple years, same goes for 3ds and Wii, just like they did with the Wii U. DS might have a chance on the next system, but that's about it.

The Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Tracks are fun, and I've sinked numerous hours into the N64 and GBA online apps
really proud of you to make this good of content for a small audience. The video is amazing and enjoyable. I hope to see more of you in the future

@@krallakrulla971 bro what it did more than double in 24 hours
PLEASE let there still be fans of NSO after this! I love it the way it is.
Funnily enough, Kirby 64 was only temporarily for the western version of the app, not the Japanese version. As for the fog rendering and moreso the Dark Link room, those were issues stemming back to the WiiU VC versions of the games
I wish the NES SNES N64 GB GBA and SG online had a feedback board where you can request other games
You can’t always get what you want.
Like Nintendo would ever listen to fan feedback
No idea why you don't have millions of subs. Your delivery, voice, and the video editing is perfect.
Gamecube upwards probably isn't very viable for NSO atm due to the size of the games. If they switch to a cloud-only format it might be but currently they have all the ROMs downloaded for instant access.
I know it will never happen but I'd love to see all the old Pokemon games come to the service
bro imagine getting to play Emerald ;-; I'd be so happy
Meanwhile Game Freak: Oh! YoU wAnT aNoThEr TeRrIbLe ReMaKe?
I thought this was a vid from a big channel good stuff bro, keep it up :)
Prehistorik Man and Bomb Logic are great games.
the fact you have only 214 subs is criminal, you have some stellar narration i’ve been binging your vids
Thank you! I've never really been into Pokemon, but I'd definitely love to give the older gens and even the spinoffs a shot if they were added.
I seriously hope potential Mario Party Superstars DLC is why Nintendo is waiting so long to release Mario Party 3 otherwise whats the point
Yeah it’s really strange. I’d love to see more content for Superstars, so I hope that’s the case.
Fire Emblem 6 (which only came out in JP) and Advance Wars 1+2 for GBA would be highly appreciated, too.
I mean we already have Reboot camp so whafs the point?
sorta a nitpick, but i wish there was an option in the n64 app settings to set the resolution back to the native 240p, as high resolutions on n64 games clash with the low res hud, low res textures, and the low poly models. a crt filter for n64 would also be nice
Yeah that makes sense
this all sounds like there's not enough developers to bring them in and properly emulate it.
This video is great! Honestly a super underrated channel
you give off these "wise grandparent" vibes. i mean it in the best way! i enjoyed listening to your rambles, critiques and sometimes positive words
no Matter the age, vibe or Something 3rd, you are kind of like that one family member i never had who cares about games
thank you!
To add to the earlier point, Genesis was handled by NERD and M2, GBA was NERD and Panasonic Vietnam & those are basically perfectly fine
The expansion pack is probably not worth the price yet, but the base subscription for only 20 bucks gives you so much. Honestly i dont mind the way they sell this games because there are a lot of games j played and enjoyed here that i would have never bought myself, but having them included in the subscription encouraged me to try them
Sunset Shimmer :D
I remember the good old days of the Virtual Console. Every Thursday we got new releases.
holy shit you only have 300 subs? that is criminal this is some of the best video essay content i’ve seen! love the music choices also! had to subscribe keep it up man!
What do game companies do with their older titles that surpasses what fans do with them?

Yeah a few people mentioned that. I thought I had made it quiet enough, but I’ll be sure to remember to do that next time.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for letting me use that footage!
Really great video, keep up the quality content. One of my issues with the NSO emulators is how small the opening library is for stuff like GBA. I also hope they add a gamecube one, even though it probably won’t happen

The switch really isn't strong enough to emulate gamecube, maybe the switch 2 will get them
@@HPPrintervx4p5qunfortunately even though the switch 2 will have a 99.9% chance of being strong enough to run gamecube games, i doubt we’ll get them because of all of the HD ports that have released lately
@@HPPrintervx4p5q It is strong enough. Mario Sunshine in 3D All Stars is at least partially emulated, as are Pikmin 1/2
@@totalradlad mario sunshine and pikmin are easier to emulate GameCube games, a game like f zero gx is much more demanding. It might be possible but the cpu of the switch is very weak, that's why they had to port the code on galaxy so it didn't have to emulate the cpu side.
Xenoblade and MOTHER 3 music based based based based based
Yeah the game selection being weird and not great likely partially has to do with how many classic compilations have been dropping left and right since like 2015.

I do not think gamecube or wii games will come to NSO, or 3DS. Those games are in a state that makes them really easy to remaster/rerelease on their own, which I think make more money than adding them to the subscription
Besides I honestly am all for the gamecube and wii remastes when they are around the quality of metroid prime remastered or the ttyd remake.
We now have a new great Nintendo creator on RUclips. I have been watching a lot of Nintendo content and all I can say is, Great Job Man!!!
you gotta love the fact this video was tagged by hotel mario
That's just my theory.
dang you're growing so fast! congrats on getting 600 subs!
Sim CIty was by Maxis - which is owned by EA - so unless EA decide to allow SNES Sim City to be ported over, it's unlikely to happen.
It’s not flimsy in my opinion.
Subscriptions are legalized extortion
Gamecube is never coming to NSO. Those games are just modern enough to where with little work they know they can re-sell them to us at full price.
This is a strategy for them, as they can know what they users want, and for us, since we can talk to them without having to talk so much about complaints untill they listen to us
we all know they don't have that apartment because it would always be ignored.

since I hate most N64 games and most 3D games in general. Also with Nintendo Online, It's the main
way to play Animal Crossing.
Still waiting for Super Smash Bros. And Donkey Kong 64 for NSO

But I can't without getting scalped or "sailing the 7 seas"
Oh and I forgot my main stance. Until they actually fix the actual online experience, I don't care how good the retro stuff gets! That's why these things shouldn't be paired together
Nintendo is really overlooking the possibility of four swords adventures online if they don't add it to NSO on top of no GameCube itself.
From what I remember hearing (please take this with a grain of salt) but the next Nintendo console will continue support for NSO as it is
They needa add blast corps 😭
I'd honestly really love to see Mischief Makers get released on NSO. It's a great little 2D platformer which would help expand the N64's NSO library (especially since the game has never been officially re-released before). Plus, it was developed by Treasure, who is no stranger to porting their games over to Nintendo consoles (including a number of games currently on NSO).
Edit: Did not realize you mentioned the game in your video. My point still stands regardless
Thank you SO MUCH for creating this video and sharing it!
Yeah I think so too
This was a really well done video! You covered all my gripes with the service and it's offerings. It could be so, so much more than what it is.
cant believe you forgot urban champion smh. played it as a kid on one of those famiclone consoles we found at a flea market
Very groovy video. I keep finding great videos made by smaller content creators. Glad I’ve found you.
My main problem is they release them too slowly. If they could update it twice a month, and add 3 games on each platform every update, then that would be great
It’s only too slow for you. The Switch is always getting new games by itself that it makes waiting for new classic games bearable.
I can’t imagine the mental gymnastics required to think Nintendo’s online service is anywhere remotely close to being worth any amount of money.
