  • If you travel to The Netherlands, you really should try the HEMA sausage! It's a local favorite. This smoked sausage is sold by the department store chain HEMA, and we tried one at our favorite Amsterdam location.
Is it good? It's so cheap.. it can't be good? Can it??!!
Also.. dessert. Every heard of a TOMPOUSE? The famously difficult to eat Dutch/Belgian treat also makes an appearance on this vlog!
    ABOUT US
We are Nate and Katrina, two American expats living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! We balance a busy career and grad school while we explore Europe and beyond. We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.
We probably won’t look or sound like many other travel vlogs out there. We really want to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

HEMA is easy. Try : Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam. There probably are a few tonguetwisters in there for non-Dutchies :D And rookworst isnt typically eaten just like that. I know HEMA is selling it like that for a long time, but its way too fatty and dense to eat on a bun in my opinion. Its best on a stamppot like hutspot and youll eat that with knive and fork, so you cut off thin slices and mix it with the potato, carrot and onion mash. Bit of gravy too and youll have a great, cheap traditional meal. Or sliced in a nice thick peasoup of course! Real Dutch winter countryside food!

Two things not to be missed at HEMA: bandages with the cushion at the end so it can wrap multiple times around the finger and silicone shoe laces for sneakers so you can slip your shoes on without tying and untying. Game changers both of these things!

Little patented Heinz secret is that the tomato paste with all its ingredients (vinegar, sugar, spices etc.) after it’s all mixed is pumped under immense pressure thru a tiny ceramic hole which opens up the natural fibers in the tomato paste and that thickens the ketchup without the need of having to add some emulsifiers that eventually loose their binding properties and those ketchup brands that do add emulsifiers often get runny again after a while.

I do have a question we are coming to Amsterdam for new years. I can’t believe how expensive it is arggghhh !!! I have 3 children aged 12, 10, 16 where can I go that’s safe to watch fireworks ?
Thanks Nate and Katrina !!! All the best the Arnold Family !!!

This comment made our day! Thank you so much. I think you "get" us... ; -)
Amsterdam is quite expensive... and they have basically outlawed AirBnB, so prices went even higher.
I would definitely watch some videos of NYE in Amsterdam. Some say fun.. some say war zone... We have never seen so many fireworks in a small space. The city puts on a great show, but the locals are obsessed and light them all over the streets.
We are usually still in the USA with family on NYE, so not totally sure about where the best place would be.... Best of luck!

Thanks for the review, great store Hema is a brand with quality products. Rookworst best to eat it with mosterd en a beer. Surprising fact the French love the Hema stores. Now regarding the rookworst haha it is bad but a must. Germans have the best sausages for sure but the Dutch are just more fun.

I guarantee you; HEMA, fat and salty. Butcher's one, real meat taste. Best bet is some local so called: Keurslager but do check if they make their own rookworst.

Indeed, there's no good way to eat a Tom Poes. I always start by eating away the yellow stuff on the sides and when I'm done I push down the top layer and then it will fit in my mouth and I can eat it. The pink stuff is the best 👍

Hema sausage is okay, but for the good stuff you go the a specialist shop. A "banket bakkerij" (banquet bakery) for cakes and pies, a "keurslagerij", a choice butchery for the better rookworst. There are tonnes of really good artisanal shops who have far superior quality to any brand. That goes for all of Europe.

  • @Bandit-Darville
    @Bandit-Darville Год назад +1

Yeah, see: the thing is the bun kinda ruins the overall taste of the rookworst. I like it best just plain hot out of the pan in piece of paper and have the juices from it drip down your fingers. That to me is the authentic way of eating a "halve warme". The sausage itself is typically the meat part of a stamppot meal. There is a nice crossover going on in the video by the way between the rookworst and the Heinz ketchup which are both products marketed as "the one and only". :-)

The HEMA offers the best-value-for money you can get in The Netherlands. That goes for the tompoucen (which use to be better), but especially for the rookworst ('smoked sausage'), the snert (peasoup) and the cheese puffs.
8:56 : "the snap" : yes, very well observed. That snap is really different compared to other Dutch rookworst.
Warning : there also is a 'lean low fat rookworst' by Unox. Please don't try.
As for mustard. The Netherlands have their own local mustard. Like Zaanse mosterd, Groninger mosterd, and Friese mosterd. French mustard , and Grey Poupon are available in most supermarkets, but are ...... French.
