    There's a famous 'Nagoro Scarecrow Village' that was all but abandoned due to the aging population and children moving away so one woman brought the village back to life with scarecrow dolls. I think this roadside attraction is inspired by that since even the doll designs look similar in construction.

    I moved to Japan this year and I live in a rural town. I was exploring the mountainous hinterland of the otherwise dense coastal town and I stumbled on a sign that said ‘Maria, goddess of light’ and new that it would either take me to Kan’on Maria statue or I would be abducted by some syncretic cult. It turns out it was a Kan’on Maria statue, which surprised me because I always thought that they were limited to Kyushu but I guess I am not that far away and there were hidden Christians all throughout Japan

    This may have been addressed a millions times in the comments, is Japan Eat the same person as Bill Wurtz? The delivery, scripts, voice, and overall fun vibes are very similar, and they are so entertaining.
    Keep up the great content. I love the shorts and the long videos. I hope to do research in Japan at some point, and these videos make me feel a little more comfortable in pursuing my trip. Thank you!

    This was so cool to watch. Fyi, if you're doing more long videos, I'd be interested in hearing more about the town with lots of demon statues in it. I tried to tell my family about it, but couldn't remember the town name, and couldn't find your short on it. I think you went there to get a special kind of noodle made with local rice, and you said it was not really all too different from the regular kind.

      That's Fukusaki, which has yokai everywhere because it's the birthplace of famous yokai folklorist Kunio Yamagata. Their town mascot is a kappa named Gajiro. He's a cute guy if you ask me. As for the food you're thinking of it's mochimugi, a special type of soba. He mochimuga soba and mochimuga ice cream IIRC.

    I've lived in Kansai for half a year and the strangest thing I've ever seen was not in Osaka, surprisingly.
    One day I wanted to just hike and stroll in the countryside, so I went to Kato City, Hyogo. The hike I searched with a common hiking trail app led me through the northeastern part of the city across a few hills. Normally, when I went on hikes like this, I'd check google maps for interesting places along the way and unsurprisingly, there was nothing along my way that day.
    However, after hiking for maybe 2 hours, I came across this GIANT roman looking architecture, in the middle of the forested hill really. As I didn't have any service there, I couldn't check for more information or satellite images, I was just stunned. It was probably more than a kilometer long and had absolutely enormous structures within it. Even more strangely, there was literally noone. It was completely empty, but there was also no construction site. And one thing about Japan you have to remember: as soon as there is the smallest thing to see, you'll see people visiting it and you'll see a small restaurant or souvenir shop. Here, nothing. No shop, maybe a handful of houses along the road leading towards it. Cicada time was over, so it was almost completely silent. So eerie.
    If you thought this was it, then I gotta tell you there was ANOTHER huge structure (seemed related to buddhism) just 10 minutes away from it further down the same road. Maybe this one was even larger. Still, noone there except this guard looking person in front of the senmon (entrance gate of a temple). Naturally, I was curious and left the street to cross the parking lot/square in front of the gate to take a picture of what might be behind this massive gate. But as soon as my foot entered the grounds of what was now temple and not street anymore, I heard an alarm and the guard was gesturing to f off. Safe to say, I fd off.
    The end of the story would be that at the end of the (only) road I was on, a hiking trail should have led me for half an hour across this hill/mountain range. There was no trail. Not even a trailhead. There was nothing. I still went and I wouldn't recommend doing what I did.
    If you're interested, try to search Kato City on google maps and switch to satellite and check the northeast area of the city. You'll not believe your eyes.

      @@offroad5798 I know exactly where he's talking about.
      It's actually not Roman, it's an Indian temple but with oddly Roman column side buildings. Look up "ナーランダ僧院 Hyogo Kato" in google maps.
      That whole area is full of cultural exchange buildings like a Cambodian Royal palace and the Indian temple, so it's not odd at all to come across these things.

    • @aohige
      @aohige Год назад +7

      @Flexx The "Roman" building is a replica of the Nalanda University from India, and for whatever reason has Roman columns on the side buildings. The Buddhist structure you saw is the Royal Grand Hall of Buddhism. Next to that is the Cambodian Royal tribute park. Basically that whole mountain side are cultural exchange palaces.
