  • "Salome Dances" is a symphonic piece choreographed for this occasion. The original idea was the "Dance of the seven veils" done by the teenage Salome for her step-father King Herod in order to get her lustful way with John the Baptist who is being held prisoner by Herod. Her shocking behaviour leads to her being put to death. This biblical tale was elaborated by Oscar Wilde in a play (in French) and then into an opera by Richard Strauss. In the present instance, played 17 08 2022 and 24 09 2022, the choreographer saw Salome as a crazed 'street' person who attacks passers-by, and is arrested rather than put to death.
